Thank God someone had the foresight to record performances like this, such classic blues by one of the masters and a dedicated disciple from England. The Stones had great respect for the legends such as Muddy and Howlin Wolf, cause without the blues, there would not be rock and roll!!!
The Rolling Stones' blues influence is what makes them so great. My God, to share a stage with Muddy Waters and his band had to be an out of body experience for Mick and the Stones.
I would hope so as they named their band after his song and got international fame off his music and Cadillac records blacks artists catalogs but unlike other artists at least they paid respect and homage.
You can tell Mick was in love being next to ol Muddy. I bet any true rock star would be star struck to be next to one of the men that wrote most every rock song to be.
Love to hear/see how the Stones get in front of their blues heroes ... I've got a track with Howling wolf teaching Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr how to do Red Rooster. They sound like little kids in awe of the master
One of the moments in Rock and Blues history where we want to keep times to stand still and never change anything what happened outside of this club, every girl and guy they were there won't forget those amazing evening forever
I was on a business trip staying at the Hilton & Towers and I went out the back walked down this block and there was the Checkerboard/Buddy Guys - chill little spot. Chicago still has some funky grit left - In NY its GONE - sadly we get the jerks from the Midwest & hipsters - Manhattan since the 90s has been untouchable to live - now the outer boroughs are very expensive.
Thanks a MILLION for sharing this INCREDIBLE HISTORY ...! BRAVO to whom ever .... This is REALLY sweet ..... ... if ... they could have .. just squeezed 3 or 4 more guitar players on that tiny stage .... it could have been.......
I'm very jealous that you got to see this.I just saw it on PBS tonight and will be buying it from ebay. This is one of the best show's I've ever seen.Just wish I was there to see it live like your lucky self.
Mick is sharing the stage with 10 guys in a dimly lit club. To be the center of attention, Mick cleverly wore a bright red jumpsuit with white stripes -- so your eyeballs go directly to him. It's cheesy but it worked.
Exciting meeting of two greats of popular music, Muddy Waters and Rolling Stones. Muddy is having a great time and The Rollings are in heaven playing with their idol. Yeah bring me champagne when I'm thirsty. Bring me reefer when I want to get high. Yeah bring me champagne when I'm thirsty. Bring me reefer when I want to get high. Well you know when I'm lonely Bring my woman set her right down here by my side. Well you know there should be no law on people that want to smoke a little dope. Y'know I'm gonna get so high this morning It's going to be a cryin' shame. Well you know I'm gonna stick with my reefer Ain't gonna be messin' round with no cocaine.
Watching them sing this & seeing Muddy so happy has made my day once again. I love how he wants it to get quiet & more personal when he sings "Everytime I get high, I lay my head down in my baby's breast". Love Muddy & Big Mama Thornton.
Hi kawboyracing, I had been through a bad breakup, and lived near a very bad, very dangerous area. Which is where the bar was. I started going 4 or 5 x a week! When this night happened there was a $20 cover, but they let me in. I had become a regular. I got to sing with Phil Guy, Buddy's brother! The doorman would walk me to the bus holding a straight razor until I got on the bus! Crazy college days....
Que maravilha ! E 25 anos depois ou mais no show para o filme shine a ligth eles todos tocam juntos novamente esta música mas sem o muddy .vale conferir .emocionante!
This is awesome!....check it out at 2:40 when Ronnie Wood takes a swig on the Whisky bottle. The Checkerboard was my favorite blues clubs when I lived in Chicago (20 yrs ago) and was there when the Stones happened to drop by one night. Does anyone know the name of the left-handed guitar player? I remember seeing him a few times at the Checkerboard.
Lefty Dizz. He was a local legend on the Chicago blues scene. Really unique player, very charismatic and a super nice guy. Passed about 30 years ago, RIP...
I remember when the stones met Muddy for the first time and asked for his autograph, Mick said "Mr Waters..." and Muddy was shocked and was like how in the hell in the peak of sagregation and rasicm could these white boys be talking to me so respectfully and looking up to me? that was a legendary moment.

That would have been a totally badass concert to have been at.
I saw Muddy in 81 at a little bar in Barrington Illinois. It was an awesome night, only a few people. He played 3-4 songs.
Jacked to the MAX!!!! JESUS CHRIST!!!!

Did Mick just get done coaching soccer or something?
unfortunate outfit!
