Meanwhile Revlon Cherries in the Snow has been the same for 50 years
Bingo. It can be done.
Just love this color ❤
Oh I LOVE Cherries in the Snow as a nail polish. NOTHING is even close to that colour. I can pick that colour up from a mile away 😅
Soo It’s a 30 year old telephone game
Basically yes
Exactly LOL!😂😜
Love Erin Parsons, her videos are beautiful and you just know she feels passionate about the history of make-up. Delighted to see Alexis mentioning Erin. Both are brilliant women.
Love Erin’s content ❤️
@@thelipsticklesbiansWhat happened to M.A.C og lipstick shade "O" but once the make up artist's sold their company to we all know who the shade "O" was completely different.
The og shade was the best one and Erin Parson showed a short clip showing the og shade compare to the new shade so I too am confused on why they changed the shade when it was sold to Estee Lauder..
@@mercedesvelasquez8781 O was an amazing and unique colour.
Came here to leave the same comment ❤ Erin is incredible
I get exactly what you are saying but these shifts are EXTREME with MAC. If they can’t match the color at least somewhat, they need to cancel the color and come up with a new name. It’s simply not fair to the customer and is fraudulent.
Yup. Just discontinue it and rename it. We’re not stupid
I think MAC discontinues shades all the time.
@@cm_mb except for the ones they continue for 30 years with the same name but they’re a completely different shade. And you start to wonder if you’re losing your mind. Like why does this lipstick look different on me now 😂I swear it used to be my favorite……
Strongly agree. Make a new name, stop deceiving and gaslighting people
@@Phoenixhunter157 That would be so annoying!!😆
This is reminiscent of what happened to MAC Warm Soul Mineralize Blush…a moment of silence to honor the original shade that once was among us
The change it? When??
@@xoxjelloxox it was a long time ago. My best guess is 2014-2015. There was an uproar at the time because MAC/Estée Lauder kept telling people the shade had not changed when in fact it had changed.
And they LIED about it!! That's the worst part! 🤬
@@dogwalker97 what changed?
@@xoxjelloxox the color of the shade changed. You can search in the words “MAC warm soul blush old color” to find a video that shows both shades
I have a Myth from about 2010 and it is much closer to the older one. They can use watches online of the old version and match it up that way too. They tried it.
There’s more to this though, If you go into the drugstore and really study the lipsticks or glosses or even shades of foundation there are slight differences even within the same shade. Go look. Pick up two of the same items in the same shade. I see this because I used to do color matching at my job. I can see the difference if there’s a 10% shift in yellow or red. My eye is trained at this point. No two bottles are exactly the same. Each batch is going to have slight variations. That’s because the ingredients are hand poured and measured. They can be off slightly depending on if the person poured every single drop of that mix into the mixer. Also, some pigments oxidize over time or once they hit the air. WHO even knows if her original Myth is really the right shade.
I was going to say that. She’s holding a lipstick from the 90s which I’m sure has shifted over time too - same way perfume or food would not look smell or taste the same 30 years later.
It's the same with paints. I worked at a coating factory years ago and there were tiny variations between batches. We had equipment to measure color. It was a neat process.
That’s fascinating
@@tara_27244 yes. Anything is going to oxidize over time when it hits the air a certain amount of time. Just think of how many foundations oxidize within seconds of them hitting your skin!
@@miriamthompson905 yup. Everything that’s manufactured has some room for human error. It’s almost impossible to get colors to be exact every time. You just get as close as you can! lol
Spice lip liner..ugh it's orangey now. I was told by a MAC exec they are going to relaunch and go back to legacy color. YAY
I hope this is true
I hope so too
Oh my gosh in the 90s I had a MAC lipstick called Spice (I think?) and I absolutely loved it. I saw they still have a pencil of the same name (I had the lipstick and pencil) so I looked at the swatch online and it just didn’t look the way I remembered it. Memory can be a tricky thing, but the color I saw just didn’t trigger anything for me. I really wish I could find that lipstick again!
I was at a MAC workshop..so hoping the regional rep has good intel🙂 Anyone know a good dupe for spice in the meanwhile?

I'm not even into makeup but I could listen to you talk about it forever haha. Fascinating stuff!
She’s also holding a lipstick from the 90s which has also shifted over time - same way perfume or food would not look smell or taste the same 30 years later.
Very good point! Hadn't thought about it that way
Unless it’s McDonalds. 😂😂😂😂😂
@@Missfoxtooyoumcdonalds does not count as food or perfume or makeup
@@funkytime69Didn't McDonald's partner with some obscure makeup brand a few years back and make (at the very least) an eyeshadow pallette based on their Big Mac burger? I swear I feel like I saw it mentioned by Safiya Nyygard or Jen Luv (jenluvsreviews) in a video by I could just be hallucinating! 😂 If I'm right though, would McDonald's then count as makeup in this discussion?
@@cannibalisticrequiem I swear I remember this too and now I can't find it anywhere. Maybe we both come from the same original universe! Lol
This reminds of a game from childhood. You whisper something to someone, and they whisper it to someone else, on and on for several people. The original sentence is vastly different from what the last person claims the whispered sentence to be.
Haha omg yes! That's the best explanation!
Exactly LOL
Yeah, that’s called the ‘telephone game’
You make beauty products exciting again. I love all the knowledge you share with us. Thank you ❤
I remember buying my first Mac lipstick Icon in the 90s for 13 dollars. Back then they focused on lipsticks now the brand has become all over the place and expensive like everything else
Your channel is one of my favorite. I learn so much every time I watch
Happy to hear that! Thank you for being here! ❤️
Can you PLEASE PLEASE tell me what shadows you’re wearing? One of them reminds me SO much of a MAC discontinued one that I miss like crazy (please)

Milani’s Teddy Bare used to be my PERFECT MLBB shade. Now it’s the most coffin-ready mauve that I HATE WITH A PASSION. Why do brands do this 😭
I’d love to see a video explaining some of the factors behind shifts in foundation undertones. For instance, heritage makeup brands whose foundation shades leaned pink in the 1960s to 1990s started to lean orange in the 00s. And now in the 2020s there’s a demand for brands to cover all undertones i.e. pale/light/medium/deep/dark neutral, pale/light/medium/deep/dark olive, warm (pink/red/yellow), cool (blue/light yellow).
What is the chicken and what is the egg, do you think, in these default undertone shifts by big makeup brands? I believe the shift to orange being the default undertone from the 00s onwards was due to a shift towards fake tanning by consumers, and the opportunity for brands to sell 2 foundation shades at a time per consumer (your tan shade and your natural shade).
I’d be interested to know what you’ve observed. As you allude in this video, some elements of colour shift over time can be human error while other elements of shift can be deliberate nudging of the product to make room for a “new” shade.
What is on your eyes?! Its mesmerising!
Fascinating talk as always!
I love when you drop knowledge! And the way you explain it makes it so interesting!
So interesting! You are doing with cosmetics what Paula Begoun did for skincare back in the day. Keep the enlightenment coming. 💄
I loved how you started the first 10 seconds of this video! With love, kindness and the manufacturing process. This is such a Lovely channel ! ❤
Your nails look gorgeous I'd love to see a short on them!
Thank you for this explanation, it makes a lot of sense
So happy I still have my old Spice lip pencil from the 90's that my mom bought me in the 8th grade saved in case the color shifts on the Spice liner, it's old but was preserved well and the shade is in tact, the new one I have to say is missing that punch that my old spice pencil gave me. And one thing I do remember as a teen was I all my mom's MAC make up was from Canada. Save you old MAC lipsticks protect them so the color doesn't go off & a company called Three Custom remakes the shade as close as possible and has a lot of old shades on file.
*Please...what EYESHADOW ARE YOU WEARING??! I must know before I die...* 😫
This is really interesting! Thank you for your imput!!!
Please which eyeshadow are you wearing?
Love you explaining that! It is the same with food development. Also there is the term batch to batch variation. Was the original really manufactured 30y ago? What about deterioration of the product itself, oxidation etc?
Excellent summary!
Why are they swatching it on someone’s arm for comparison instead of on a material with a standardized set of colors?
THIS! That's a terrible way to do color matching
Wow 😮 thank you for explaining the science behind all the different products 😊 really appreciate the longer videos 😊 had too watch the video again lol knowledge is power 😊
You are so welcome!❤️
I love both yours and Erin’s content. I have a question for you, so I’ve been looking into more fragrances and makeup. And I’ve been trying to find fragrances that is a mixture of feminine and masculine but settle and also exotic. Do you have any recommendations?
Absolutely fascinating! I work in distribution in the consumer electronics world. Brands like Samsung and LG are very consistent. However, with something like a Vizio tv the difference in a single model are wildly different. You could see as many as four panel manufacturers. (the screen responsible for the picture you see and ultimately the quality of the tv)
thanks for explaining this
Where did you get your earrings from?! They are gorgeous 😍😍😍
Dayum!!!
Like GIA with scoring Diamonds.. Human differences! Wow!
HOW is this so fascinating 💕
This is exactly what happened to Ruby Woo. It was the perfect shade of Blue Red. Now it’s an awful shade of red.
If it were my brand, I think I'd be pretty damn vigilant to ensure they're as close as humanly possible. Because Erin is holding 2 completely DIFFERENT shades. On my skin tone, it would absolutely MATTER. 😳
Agreed. If the shade shift is that extreme just give it a new name.
Thank youuu lol!
Samantha Rhavandal will be happy to know that's probably what happened to Warm Soul 😅 he favourite Mac Blush
Raw material changing over time makes sense. However I don't buy human error. Aren't ingredients weighed and measured? That allows a formulation to stay the same everytime. This explanation makes no sense. No one is cooking from scratch each time a batch is made.
It might have to do with how people perceive different colors. I read somewhere that Pantone makes its candidates for employment take a whole bunch of vision tests, because all they deal with is color.
@@SchnarphStudios the only way the color would change is if the formulation changes, which would only change if certain ingredients are no longer available. The creation of the color boils down to the chemist mixing the ingredients to create the formulation. Once it is made it doesn't change. Now if a pigment needs to be replaced it can change to color completely so the chemist would have to try to tweek thing until they get a match. In which case it still isn't human error. What they have failed to take into consideration is color fades over time. Things degrade. That original lipstick isn't even the color it originally was.
Very interesting. Thank you.

Wow that is so informative! you are the best!❤
ooh girl, i see them pineapple earrings 👀👌🏽💛
And some formulas get changed because they can no longer get supply of a certain ingredient so they have to get the next best thing or stop making certain things all together
Afew nyx butter glosses have changed too
What lilac color is on your eyes?
That’s so fascinating!!!
Excellent ecplination!
There’s a reason why they are changing the OG formulas. They do not wanna try to source the pigments & it’s actually cheaper to make the new formulas they just put out & this is why shades changed so much, but I do think the formulas even tho they are cheaper perform better & longer & the colors are closer to the actual OG first releases. I do think they look different before touching skin, I have a lot & when I put them on they look like the OG but in the actual stick they appear almost more duel but they aren’t it’s something with this formula
I will say they are not close to the 90’s versions but almost close to the early 2000’s versions. EL bought them out & like Cleary it won’t be 100% the same but I do think the brand is slowly moving to how it was when it was the “it” brand.
Fascinating!
Thank You for the fact you always explain in clear terms what we all want to know. Love the science behind makeup.💄

Hi dear! I have some MAC lipsticks and liquid. I want to know how long can you use them after opening? Also how about Dior Lip maximizer, Dior Rouge, Dior lip addict shine, and Dior Lip balm? I cannot fine info of how long can we keep them after opening.
It always says on it, at least in the EU: there will be a little symbol on it that says a number followed by an uppercase M. For instance 6M, 12M, 18M, 24M. It means that number of months. 6M = 6 months, 12M = 12 months, and so on. Mascara is usually 3 to 6M.
I just want to memorialize the colour Chintz. My only MAC lippy from the 90s that seemed this black woman friendly. 😊
can u explain how bullet lipstick is made in the silicone? like special ones >:
Suuuper interestiiiiing
NO, I NEED THE OLD LIPSTICK, everything else turns peach on me and it looks horrible. I need the true nude!!!
Interesting!
What eyeshadow are you wearing tho? 😍😍😍😍😍

🤔 informative
Don’t they like…take pictures? 😂
I miss Trax by Mac.
MAC just changed the formula of some of their most iconic lipsticks… shit though. Crying 😭 been wearing MAC lipsticks since they launched in the USA.. shite.
I grieved when Lauder bought the company.. yet I still wear their lipsticks. Not sold on the new formula. Not.
My opinion? Shades are a product of their time. Like back in the 2010's neons were very in. Back in the 90's people liked primary colors. 70's were very yellow/brown earth tones. Etc...
Also when they make the 'same product' when the company that owns it changes there is a tendency to want to make it cheaper. Cheaper pigment = color change.
Makes sense that they keep the name and just change the shade a bit if it does not really sell. At the end of the day it's all about the $$$$$$.
What is the beautiful eyeshadow you are wearing?
Whatever happens, I hope they don’t drastically shift the color of Spice lipliner.
It's humans doing it... for now! 🤖😉
And here I just thought it was 30 years of sitting around that made the lipstick Erin was holding up a different different color!
Educate 💄
There must be a better way omg
So there's no point in falling in love with a makeup shade.
Anyway, people are disapponted. So.
😮😮😮
This is triggering my OCD. What the actual... How difficult could it be? Swatching on somebody's arm... because the sun and tanning doesn't exist. AND people don't quit their jobs, disappear or d i e. I need to go lie down.
Its Estee lauders fault... Just kidding ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I get the ick when I see huge changes like that. Feels like the brands don't care and just want your money. I always assume that a few people dream up and produce a specific color they wanted in their brand. The fact that they can't bother to smear the original lipstick on a sheet of printer paper and laminate it or whatever to keep matching it to the original swatch just makes me feel like they say f it, we need a peach in the line and this one will do. Did yall not have a vision???? And refrencing on skin and just hoping you dont get a tan or low iron is so stupid and lazy in my opinion. My own skin has changed so much over time. And relying on a single humans' eyes and their hairy arm and hand is insulting and insane.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is where AI would be better than human determinations, to make sure of color consistency.
That was too complicated for me to understand. 😢
Wow, that’s actually sad…
I hate the changing MAC lipsticks. I really miss the old Giddy shade, it’s still pretty but it’s not the same. You would think a company that big would hire a better color expert who knows their shit. Or use a computer.
💄🫦
Everything was better in the 90s. Our puppet presidents still sucked but at least they didn’t have dementia and fall going upstairs.
Or incite a insurrection.
Mind blown. Thanks for breaking it down.
