      That's for 90-112 pages. I'm ignoring the shipping, because that cost is going to be there for any comics that you order. You have to compare like to like, and people for some reason act as if they can order any other comic and never pay for any shipping. Taking the low end, that is about 40 cents per page, granted that is pretty expensive compared to Marvel, DC, Image, etc. but is pretty comparable to other indie comics from crowdfunding campaigns and or first time creators. Those costs will go down the more books they publish.

      @@TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan Indie comics are as expensive as they need to be, because they don't have the economies of scale that mainstream comics do. When Teslas first came out, they were way more expensive than their counterparts made by GM and Ford. Now Teslas are much cheaper than they used to be, and are way higher in quality than the initial versions. Isom #1 and #2 were $35 each, but Alphacore is already $7 dollars cheaper. That's a 20% price reduction in less than a year. They are improving the quality all around while lowering the price, so your complaints about pricing are ill founded.
      If you can't afford $35, you shouldn't be buying or reviewing comics then as it sound like you have money trouble. I could spend $500 a month on comics and not even be close to going over my monthly discretionary budget. Either find a way to make more money or learn to budget better if you plan or reviewing comics on your channel. A grown man complaining about not having $35 is kinda pathetic.

      @TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan  6 місяців тому

      No, YOU are ill-informed. I know the prices behind-the-scenes. Some of its volume, but some of it is just where you print and ship.
      Comic books are supposed to be cheap entertainment aimed at a younger audience. If the entry point is $35 for a 10 year-old who also can't use a credit card to order it online, that's steep.
      And most people don't blow $500 on comics. The average is around $20 to $30. You are an outlier.

    What confuses me is Eric has all of these internet friends that are really into comics yet not asked any of them for advice or to read through before he put them out. If you've not written anything previously like this then surely they would be the first people you would ask to look through it before asking for the public's money.

      @TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan  6 місяців тому +2

      That can be a problem too. You're gonna get a bunch of responses and some people want "credit". I had a guy, unsolicited, yell ideas across the con to me. I couldn't really hear him so I just sorta acknowledged him and said I think about it. He tried to give me his name and contact info.
      It's a desperate medium and one with a low bar to entry, which is good and bad. Good if you can do it, bad if you can't. Eric probably doesn't know who to trust and with all that money, who to trust becomes really hard because everyone is banging down your door. I respect that he did his own thing, even if I didn't think it was that good. He can get better. He should just stop picking fights, I'd say. All these guys need to calm the f*** down.
      Pete Semetti has the right attitude. That's a guy Eric should trust AND fund.

      I'll admit I published a book a few years back and it is hard even trying to get friends to read it then you have the problem of them not wanting to hurt your feelings. I even went to the expense of hiring two book doctors in a hope to give me honest feedback but they really didn't. I did learn a lot from the mistakes I made and if I could pass on any advice it would be to stick it in a drawer for at least a month or two then go back to it with fresh eyes although I'm guessing that's the difference between a professional and an amateur like myself.
      Love your show please keep up the great work It's great to glean tidbits of information about story telling from a professional creator. Thank you. .@@TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan

    The powers are pretty well explained actually, using the rule of show don't tell we can infer that ISOM is capable of
    - Super Strength
    - Super Agility
    - Enhanced Durability
    - Augmented Healing via resting
    Why does he rest in the early part of ISOM #2? Because a Hellion beast dug it's claws into his shoulder impacting his ability to fight, so he choose to recover knowing that he may be fighting more of those monsters.
    As for the event that made him quit, I think there's more to story. Seeing Cosplay Girl dying was one thing but what happened after that? The police would have shown up with some heroes/AlphaCore and the resulting bloodbath would have scarred him making him feel like a failure of a hero and hang up his costume in shame.
    As for the scene where he returns to the ranch he got there in the early morning and there's no reason why anyone would be near the security house which is close to his house.
    My guess for why ISOM isn't in the city is because I think Eric wants to make the city more dangerous for him when he returns to deal with Darren, kinda like how in Amazing Spiderman when Mystero was incriminating Spiderman he couldn't get around the city to investigate. I reckon he'll link up with Lincoln as they work together to take down Darren as they share a common enemy.

    It sounds like this title is more focused on overall "world building" than focusing on developing the title character. Eric might have been overly ambitious in starting this and tried to cram too much into his first books. It probably wouldve been better to have simtaneously created/published a 2nd/3rd title which could have built up the world/other characters, and kept the Isom title more focused on developing that character. But at the price point he is asking for, that might make it hard to get people to stomach paying that much for multiple books at the same time. I appreciate and respect his premise of creating "unwoke" comic books, but if he cant get a better handle on it, like you said possibly bringing in an editor, i think he will have a hard time maintaining the financial success he has had so far. I hope he does, i am all for alternatives in the economy that dont cram left wing politics in our faces. Great insightful review Tony!

    I mostly agree. The dialogue and story pacing feels a bit awkward. I'm willing to give a lot of leeway with worldbuilding first, story after, since there's plenty of manga that do the same. I still like the buildup so far. Some of the dialog sequences do sound odd when I read them, not like a natural conversion would go. I don't know if that's a style choice or how western comics are generally written or something else. I will say that 'excepts' reads perfectly well with my internal dialogue. I'm guessing that may be an accent thing since I do notice that you pronounce it differently than how I would. I'm not sure how a writer would adjust for regional dialect differences, that's probably too complicated of a topic.

    • @TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan
      @TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan  6 місяців тому +1

      It's hard to see unless you have something to compare it to. My MAIN talent is writing dialogue. I learned that through writing and through improv. What's mostly missing is the flow. One of the writing exercises to do that is to write dialogue with two characters called A and B, one after another, back and forth. The object of the exercise is to be able to distinguish every line of dialogue attributed to A as A's and B to B's. The quickest way is to do an accent on one or both. But either way, the writer should be able to hear the dialogue in his head as if they were two different people talking.
      Isom is probably Eric's voice and that's fine. He's the main character. Just like Brian on Family Guy is really just Seth McFarlane. Darren's voice should be distinct and it's mostly not. He gets mad, but so does Isom. To me, Darren is a street thug. He should be waaaaay more vulgar and threatening in everything he does. Isom is the good one, high and mighty, he should be above it all. Darren should use words like kill, not just for actual killing, but for everything. "Man, you're killin' me walkin' up in here! Don't make me call in the big guy. He'll break you." Isom has to be more high and mighty with his words. "Darren, you can wallow in this club of yours, I'm just here for Jasmine. The girl doesn't have good sense and you prey on that. Don't drag her down with you." It shows what Isom is internally thinking, that Darren is a lost cause and a scumbag who is doomed. He scolds him, which then gives Darren a reason to explode. Something like that.
      Excepts can work IF they use it long enough. Things tend to get validated if you keep pushing them through a big world and a big epic story like this. But only IF you stick with it. There will come a moment where Eric has introduced most of the characters he wants to introduce and then what? Will fans remember a character that was introduced four issues ago that he's only now getting around to explaining?
      The emotional core is also lacking. I would guess a lot of it lies with Eric July himself, but it's not being put down on paper. Isom moved out of the city for a reason. Again, it can come out in the dialogue. "This city disgusts me. How do you people live like this?" or "I'm not in town long. Give me Jasmine and I'll leave you alone." Isom leaving the city and being a superhero was a big deal, but he's already back in the costume and probably making the move back. Some of that comes out in the dialogue at Taylorville, but that's just two guys talking. During the fight, the big guy could say something like, "Darren said you left the city because you couldn't take it. Because you're a chump!" It implies a bigger world where Isom is important and people talked about him. There was a previous event and it impacted the character's dialogue. And we don't actually have to see it.

      This isn't Manga it's a Western hero comic book, from what I hear it's playing out like anime series with a bunch of filler where nothing happens, Eric is charging you 35 bucks an episode, where as anime is what 8 bucks on crunchyroll for 4 episodes for only that , but crunchyroll has lots of other series happening at the same time, can't even compare value.
      I think Mike barron who charges 10 bucks for his digital comics is awesome, I want more of that.

  • @rickwj324
    @rickwj324 6 місяців тому +1

    The Rippaverse is a grift! July is NOT a writer. The art is phoned in, with the use of 3D models instead of actual drawings. The character designs are bland, the writing is bland, there's nothing about these books that stand out as "must buy". The fact that these books are like $35 each is a slap in the face. As a huge comic reader in the 80's and 90's I saw many books come and go and never thought of again. Those books were a buck or two back then. ISOM and YAIRA would've been thrown into the .25 cent bin in no time at all back then.

    I guess you didn't know that the Ill-advised arc is a 3 book story, because you act as if Isom won't ever pay anything off. If there aren't any payoffs in book 3, then perhaps you'd have a point. I don't understand the insistence on everything introduced in Isom #1 and #2 needing to be paid off in the books that introduced them. If you were editing Game of Thrones for George R.R. Martin, you'd have him cut all the additional characters that aren't involved in the events of book one (even though they later play prominent roles in subsequent books) and all the hints about who Jon Snow's mother actually was, because that is all foreshadowing and setup not paid off until much further in the series.

    • @TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan
      @TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan  6 місяців тому

      Kinda weird comparison. You can cram a lot more in an hour live action drama than you can in a comic. Especially if it has action. You have only to compare Alphacore to Isom. AC is a whole story that introduces characters. I don't know enough about Isom. This is a common rookie writer mistake. The ideas are still in Eric's head, not on the page. There's a way to introduce things that aren't going to pay off and a way to introduce things that WILL pay off in the same issue. He spent way too much time having Isom look for this girl and have it not pay off. There wasn't enough other elements there. If Isom was bombarded by many requests and things to do AND he had to find the girl, that would be one thing. But he's singularly focused for several pages on the girl and barely gets to see her. And we aren't really shown why she's important.

    • @truthedministry
      @truthedministry 6 місяців тому

      @@TonyDiGerolamoandLittleJoan I thought you were supposed to be a writer, but you don't seem to have very good reading comprehension. I wrote: "in the events of book one". What part of that says I was talking about the TV show? The TV show did cut most if not all of the side content from the first book in order to cut down the runtime. I was saying that your "writing" critiques if applied to the Game of Thrones books (I know the actual title of the series is A Song of Ice and Fire, but people are more familiar with the name of the TV show), then you would have told George R. R. Martin (who consulted on the series, but didn't write the individual episodes) to cut out anything that wasn't directly related to the central plot of that book.
      What you describe as mistakes on Eric's part, are essential foreshadowing for later events that will be fleshed out later in the Isom books. Not all of them will be paid off in Isom #3, but the main ones regarding Jasmine, Darren, and escaping the demon pit with Sam should all be resolved. Therefore, it isn't a mistake; it is deliberate. Isom #1 wasn't without payoffs as Isom did defeat Santwan in their second encounter and Isom talked about previously being a hero and at the end he is returning to that life. Those are the setups and payoffs. The disappearance of Samford and the Norfrica foreshadowing in Isom #1 were partially paid of in book #2 and are likely to conclude at the beginning of book #3
      Isom looking for Jasmine is the core of the 3 book arc, not the core of just book #1. If he found her and resolved everything about her in book #1, there wouldn’t need to be a 3 book arc! Despite what all of you are saying Eric is following a typical three act structure, but over 3 books with each one having a minor conclusion while building towards a full conclusion in book #3. In both the books and TV show for Game of Thrones, the first threat shown is the White Walkers, but that threat isn't resolved until the 8th season of the show and is still an ongoing threat in the unfinished book series. Saying that the Jasmine storyline needed to be resolved in the first book is like saying the White Walkers needed to be stopped in the first book/season for George R. R. Martin’s series. We don’t know why Jasmine is important to Darren, because that is the central mystery of the story so far… that’s like saying that Agatha Christie needs to reveal who the murderer was in the first third of one of her novels rather than having it towards the end.
