- Pete Madsen teaches how to play the first verse from John Fahey's version of "Poor Boy Long Ways from Home" in open D(DADF#AD) tuning. This a great song for novice blues fingerpickers; blends alternate bass with cool string bends and hammer-ons.

HEY Pete Tommy here , I just discovered your free lessons here on u tube , i have been playing guitar for ever, but I have been learning the fingerpicking (claw ) method over the last few years , I played a lot of the old muddy waters Fred Mcdowell Robert Johnson stuff years ago the 90s ,,all flat picking and Slide, WELL the finger style claw or cotton picking method has been a lot more fun and sounds way better I all ways wondered why those cats in the 20s 30s and so on sounded like 2 guitars going on ... I am finally trying to learn HOW TO PLAY the GUITAR NOW never too late to try and improve theory has all ways been so hard for me still is, but I like your teaching i feel comfortable learning songs from you, THANK YOU for your sharing ..

I, too, was a flat picker for many decades before I heard Merle Travis, Leo Kottke and John Fahey and discovered the joys of fingerpicking, and then digging into the early blues of players like Robert Johnson, Skip James, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Blake and so many other incredible players. Hey Pete, I’ve been watching this for a couple of weeks and I’ve just about got this song down in a really basic state. I’ve only been playing for little over a year, and I can’t believe I’m able to play a John Fahey song. Thanks for this video, it has really helped out a major ton!

Whats the left hand picking pattern
The right hand is picking an alternating bass, but the top/treble voice is not a pattern pick -- melody dictates the strings played.
