- Following the deeply sad news that former ranking event finalist Dene O'Kane has passed away, today we bring you a special edition of the WPBSA Snooker Podcast to remember New Zealand's greatest ever player.
Our regular host Michael McMullan is joined by WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson and leading snooker broadcaster David Hendon to pay tribute to a player who travelled across the globe to pursue his snooker dream.
We reflect on a distinguished career which saw him twice reach the World Championship quarter-finals and career-high world ranking of 18, as well as his character and affable nature away from the baize which endeared him to so many.

I remember him well . extremely good player..sad to hear about his passing.🌹
I remember watching Dene. Very sad news about him passing. RIP Dene
Sad to hear of Dene’s passing. My brother’s name is Dene, spelled the same way. Whenever anyone asked why it was spelled that way my Dad would say after Dene O’Kane. May he rest in peace 🍀
Warren King was also in that world amateur in Calgary Alberta Canada in 1983 ,great player
So sad to hear this.I had just listened to your earlier podcast with Steve and Neal and dene was mentioned and i just happened to say very underrated player, Not easy in those days been on other side of the world. He was a genuine top 16 player imo.
Condolences to his family and friends. rip Dene

RIP. You were my table hero. My friend played you st a RSA. he lost . We will always see you as a true gentleman of the game with the flair of that red hair. Beautiful. .
World amateur in Calgary Alberta 1983 was favorite to win but the tables were brutally tight and fell short... Parsons from Scotland won...he was a postman from the UK in his 50s
Just to correct you, it was the World Amateur in 1982, and it was won by Terry Parsons from South Wales. R.I.P., Dene.
RIP Dene.
bye dene
Ineed I do im currently just about to take off in Dublin airport travelling to an event in hull. 🙏
He had a fall at home and died from a brain bleed .RIP
Awful news.
I remember Dene playing at the Rotorua Citizens Club. It may have been in 1986. And he played our top players giving them all a 50point start. And beat them all except one. RIP Dene fondly remembered
