Insightful. My spouse has told family members “ I hope you cherish this card, because its probably a $500.00 card”. Looking back on my spending the statement maybe accurate.

I tell him i love making cards it makes me happy and he loves the cards i make as well and its funny he brags to his friends about my craft room and if they come over he shows them as well❤👍

Last year was my big "investing" year. I collected and put a lot of money into my crafting. I decided that if people can get a boat, snowmobile or a motorcycle just for fun, then why not get a what I really want for MY type of fun...which is crafting. You see, all my life I have scrimped and saved and made do, and it was nice to give myself permission to buy what I wanted to try (within reason sort of).
I focused on dies and inks. I got assorted papers and upgraded some basic tools and got a good media mat. I replaced a tired old Cuttlebug with a Sizzix Big Shot because I don't mind hand cranking. I got the good plates for it. I also got a nice variety of stamps. I scavenged and sorted things I already had, fabrics, buttons, and many other odds and ends. I organized.
I liked seeing your breakdown on use and spending. Now that I have a good deep foundation of materials and supplies, I want to keep my spending much more reasonable and in line with what I really really find I like to use. I suspect some things will be purged and gifted as I figure it all out. I really appreciate your analysis of your usage and your reasoning.
I'm enjoying and using all my new stuff, looking at it with the attitude you teach; am I getting my money's worth from this?! I'm making and sending cards in small batches, making junk journals and other fun things.
It will take time to bring the scale of what I spent to what I make into balance. It is my "thing" to craft, and I thank you for this video and others you do. I am a new VIP member now, and although I have a different style than yours, I love your straightforward approach.

Wow, I calculated how much I spent on crafts last year and it was almost double that much and I don’t make money at it and don’t have a UA-cam channel. I will definitely be more conservative this year. I think you did very well on your spending, great job!

It’s good to hear that you mostly support the choices you made. It’s GREAT that -- like the rest of us -- you’re spending your own money and given advice and endorsements based, not on your obligation to retailers, but the quality and design of individual elements. I deeply appreciate that when everything else is a disguised commercial and I want to be clear about my appreciation.

Yep, we ALL spend too much. If we are honest with ourselves. Dies; I think they last for SO long that I never feel bad about those. Because of my age, I don't buy many Christmas items. Do look at "saying" dies etc. But really, how many more Christmas's will I be making cards for? Before I buy, I try to think about - how much will I use it - can it be used for multiple season cards - can I use it over and over if I am going to sell something or make card gift sets for folks etc. Will NEVER invest in a hot foil machine. Just don't feel I would use it enough. Inks - YES because of ALL the wonderful things you can do with them. Only water reacting ones. Alcohol inks - always. the pie chart is priceless :) Good job - thanks for sharing your "honesty" :) Bless your creations in the coming year. Just HAVE FUN because life is short. DO cards for your mom and not just for mother's day 😉 someday you will regret that you didn't.

That's refreshing to see a UA-cam crafter reveal how much they spent. I do always think all these supplies must cost a bomb. I personally try to craft on the cheap side. I’ll buy only necessities, I need to not catch the awesome sales, they add up like crazy. I donate hundreds of cards, don’t make a cent out of my hobby. I see de-stashing is something many of us need to do, but other than Etsy, are there other sites to post? I see NextDoor has a place to seek, I’m not on Facebook anymore so FB Marketplace is out of the question. I tried selling some top-notch stamp sets (I prefer die cutting as I’ve discovered, not stamping), but the woman who called me shamed and slammed me for my craft company purchases. Tim Holtz? Pinkfresh? Spellbinders? SSS? She was repping from a company that rhymes with Ramp It Up. I cried my eyes out afterward, but only got angry a day later which was the end of my de-stash attempt!

I love your videos and always learn from them. I thought I could share a time saving tip for foil plates that create sentiment strips, like the ones from Spellbinders. I have several dies from companies that make a single stamp with many sentiments and a matching die that cuts them all at the same time. I take the die and lay it down on wide post it tape. I then place my sentiment strip plates face up in the die openings, remove the die and place the plates on my glimmer machine while attached to to post it tape. Once foiled, the strips cut perfectly in one pass with the die. I hope that makes sense and is helpful. This method has saved me so much time.

I'm pretty frugal, but after 15 years of card making I have a lot of stuff. Like others, I plan to revisit and use some great items that have been neglected and languishing! I am also going to go back to some of the supplies I used to love but that are now "out of style" (at least I don't see YTers using them anymore) like Stickles, Nuvo drops, Glossy Accents... I even have some beautiful patterned papers--just because the craft companies now want me to buy "new stuff" and create my own backgrounds doesn't mean I can't still use these gorgeous coordinated papers! I purchased several things during Black Friday sales; I am keeping them front and center in a container and won't buy more dies/stamps/etc. until I have used these. I am deleting sales ads without looking at them! The high prices actually help me refrain from buying; a set of sentiment stamps and their dies were priced at $54 on SSS last week. For me, that's crazy expensive and an easy pass, no matter how much I like them nor how versatile they are.
And with the time I invest, I consider card making as 3 separate hobbies: Watching card making videos, shopping, and creating!😂
It is fun. It is healthy. It brings joy to others. Its cost can be comparable to many other hobbies. I want to be wise AND enjoy!

This is a great idea. I should do an analysis. I spent more in 2022 than usual because I was focused on expanding and upgrading my ink pads. I didn't add many stamp sets, but I did significantly expand my stencil collection (to go along with my new collection of Distress Oxide ink pads). I also didn't make many cards because my craft room became a staging area for some vintage role playing games and toys I was selling. My area is now clear of that and I've been making cards, but I have two more significant collections to sell.

You have inspired me to be more mindful of what I buy, and to develop a system similar to yours. Thank you for the motivation!

I am trying not to go between I want to spend almost nothing, and I have given up all self control. I'm trying to find a normal happy point.
I agree with you, about my own supplies, about inks. I don't need more. With that said, it is HARD to resist the new distress colors. In the last 2 years I have bought cracklin campfire in distress and rustic wilderness in oxide.

The price of dies is getting ridiculous. I am really watching where my crafty money is going and WHO it is going to these days. I was lucky enough to purchase my new Switch for $200 (total) early 2022. It has been the best investment and I love that I was able to find such a great price on a great product although I was a bit gung ho this year on other purchases. I have an inventory program though and it's helping make wise spending decisions as I can now see what I have and when I tempted I check out all my stash easily before I hit "add to cart."

Tfs. Too scared to figure how much I spent last year. I use Airtable which I find very helpful. I have a ‘database’ for my expenses and another to track my dies, stamps, etc. it also has the option to add pics. It adds up everything or you can download and work with in excel.

  • @sherylosullivan9619

Hmmm… so revealing. My biggest purchase last year was also my Sizzix Switch, but I don’t regret it one bit. As soon as I got it I stopped using my Big Shot but I also found I was happier to die cut than I had been before as it was so much easier.
I started running small group card crafting classes that students pay for. I opened a new account just for craft and I’ve been quite strict at only using that money to buy supplies. I also had a stall at the local markets and sales of that have helped too. Along with some sales of cards to my friends, I think in the second half of the year I might have come out even. I have yet to do a spreadsheet to find out! Love a good pie chart!

Dear Justine, this was really interesting. I wonder, with you being in Germany and not all products being available through German shops, do you figure postage charges and customs duties into the prices? Or do they come on top? OR have you found suppliers locally to solve this issue (short of the SimonSaysStamp own brand stuff one absolutely needs to have, of course) - in which case, I would be most grateful for tips 😊 (Alexandra Renke was a new one for me which I gleaned of this video, so thanks for that!). Kind regards from Bodensee, Nicola
