    Funny but I never think of this amp as a "practice amp" - this thing will blow your doors down!

    I'd like to share my experience, and hopefully it may help some one who's trying to decide on this amp. I owned a Mark V 25 for 2 1/2 years and it was my main recording/gigging amp. I LOVED it! It was the most versatile small amplifier I've ever seen. However. I recently went back to using a Dual Rectifier with matching oversized 4x12. For me, the MV25 just didnt quite cut it in a full band setting with 2 guitar players. Our other guitar player uses a Road King through a 4x12 and what I noticed it is that even when I matched his volume, the higher wattage amp always sounded fuller, and filled the room more, even when he turned his volume lower than mine. It's like a garden hose vs a Super Soaker squirt gun, both might shoot as far, but one delivers WAY more water. The higher wattage amps have more sound to them in a full band setting. And more headroom on the clean. I LOVED the MV25, and in maybe a different band situation I would have been fine, but in my 4 piece rock band where the other guys have high wattage amps, it always struggled to fit in.

    You said that it can do any tone you want at low levels. While I agree that it can do pretty much every tone, this amp, as well as most mesas, sound WAY better when they're cranked. I love this amp and its fun at low volumes, but the amp really shines at higher volumes. It really opens up. Especially in 25 Watt mode.

    Bought one about a year after you made this video, I had owned a V-Twin, which is VERY different, but the control philosophy is similar. so I was ready for the 5:25
    I use an EVM-12L in a Theil cab, with that efficient a speaker, I could play with a loud drummer, won’t fill the air of like a 4 x 12, but on beam it’s every bit as loud. 105db is as high as I’ve ever played it, but I play it at home with a big speaker system at about 85DB (masters low, preamp high)
    and it still gets you those big amp tones, think Santana in a 16 lb tiny box! Problem is it’s kinda a one of a kind sound, after I put 5000 hours on it, a pre amp tube started to fail, Boogie service is really hard to find, I found a guy …60 miles away, the idea of being without it for 6 weeks……so I bought another 🙄. But I was moving to a stereo rig, 2 sound fab, old one stays on the fat setting clean, (old Altec 12) and the new 5:25 is the dirt channel, the mix is great for both Larry Carlton & Santana type stuff, but works well with horn and piano jazz on the neck PU as well as rock on the bridge PU. Definitely the best sounding Amp I’ve ever owned.

    25 tube watts is NOT a practice amp! It's a fire breathing monster that will be way more than loud enough for any drummer and any club.

    Hi Phillip, thanks for making these videos! I wanted to give my opinion about what you thought of Ola's demo. I love that guy and he has inspired me to learn recording and to try to get a good tone out of the distortion from an amp. I have been following for years now. That said, I actually didn't like his demo of the Mark V 25. I don't think he really captured the potential of the amp. I mean, yes he made it sound awesome but I think he's done better tone capture of an amp. It actually surprised me when I heard his demo, again it was good compared to other people's demos but comparing to his own videos and recordings, I thought it lacked punch and that "in your face" sound that he has been able to achieve in other recordings. I'm not sure why that was but that is my impression. I'm expecting a Mark V 25 this week and can't wait to try it out and attempt to record with it. Like I said, Ola's got me spending money and learning about recording a real amp since 2010 and have express him how much I've learned from him and how much he has inspired me and others.
    Love your videos, very informative!

    I know those Marshall cabs you have are sexy as hell, but I've played both the full size and 25 watt Mark V, as well as Rectos, but a Mesa cab with those "made for Mesa" V30's really go a long way to completing the sound of those amps you got there. I know there's no right or wrong with gear, but Mesa cabs/speakers really compliment Mesa amps.
    Like your videos and Thanks a lot!

      +Phillip McKnight I've got the same 1x12 slant but sometimes wonder if the LS 1x12 wouldn't be "better". I know it's a matter of taste so let me ask you this way: what makes you keep the 1x12 slant on hand when you have the LS as well? I've done a lot of reading, but as a guy who owns both, I'd really appreciate your thoughts.
      Thanks again for the great video!

      Wak Job whats so sexy about Marshall cabs? 😂 Just use what sounds best. I guess it's because americans like to own British amps and British people love to get their hands on USA amps and guitars . We should get a trade deal going so we can all swop lol. Orange cabs are the popular ones over here in the UK ATM. But mesa is up there with it as the best cab I've heard especially the 3/4 back wide body 1x12. I also have a soldano 2x12 that's works great with my mesa mark v

    Hi Phillip. Since you've got 50w and 100w amps as well, do you think one could gig with the Mark V: 25? I play mainly progressive metal/rock, such as Dream Theater, Rush, etc. I mean, can this amp stay tight and articulate, and be loud enough to be heard in a full band context (say, rehearsal)? When we rehearse with the band we don't mic our instruments, but when we play live we always do. Thanks a lot!

    Hey Phillip, these are some nice vids you make, love specially the comparison between the 5150iii 50 and the Archon. Any chance you could do a simillar thing for the mini Mark and the 5150 50w? It would be great to see what's the different "room" feeling we get from the 25w vs the 50w, on some higher volume settings.

    It always confuses me how people say "if you're micing it." I've never played a gig in my life where I haven't been mic'd, and the only shows I have been to where guitarists weren't were basement shows that 25 watts would cover fine.

    • @JeffAulich
      @JeffAulich 9 років тому +3

      ***** I've had a residency at a huge club for the past year, 4 nights a week. They do not mic the amp there....which is really unusual. However, I've found that 25 watts doesn't have the headroom to get me a clean tone that reaches to the back of the room.

    • @malamute8257
      @malamute8257 9 років тому +8

      I'll level with you and say club venues aren't really my thing, so I wouldn't know what is the norm in that situation. Still, I think we can all agree there are way too many guitarists bringing unnecessary 100 watt stacks and running them on 1.

    • @JeffAulich

      malamute hamscone; Aye! Out here in Honolulu, there was a very cool but very small bar; the 1st few acts of the night were usually very low gain, & high on talented tone.
      Then, the dark metal Cookie Monster acts would roll in w/mixed bag 1/2 stacks & 20 piece drumkits & force all the customers out.
      The venue was learning; owner went to music store & bought (2) 1/2 stacks, a Marshy & a MB Recto, a great SWR Bass rig, AND a electronic drum kit! Acts would be told not to bring anything besides instruments& necessary effects. All the amps were dialed in, and TURNED AROUND at the acoustic foam padded walls!!! 😂
      The soundguy, who actually knew his shit very well, had a plastic pellet gun & was a amazingly good marksman when some fool tried to sneak a hand back at the amp controls! Sadly, it was too little, too late.
      I sure miss hearing the very creative low gain acts in that cozy place of plenty single gals!
      BTW, no need for mics in there, it was the size of a small retailer, ~20' wide x 55' long, bar at far end & restrooms behind it.
      If the MB 5:25 has (2) same ohm outs,
      a pr. of 2x12's could kill small animals inside
      10 yards. And I always visit or gig w/cotton in my ears, more comfortable than those horrid foam plugs. Rolls the highs right off, w/out snuffing detail, & really helps w/out quite the over-muffling the foam earplugs do.

    Thanks for your insight. I have the Boogie Express 25 which I love but I want another Boogie with a different sound. I am a blues/rock player and also like jazz. This amp may be the one for me. I am thinking Boogie Wide body 1 12" cabinet with it. I might go for a 2 12" for a fuller sound. However it will be used most of the time in my studio. I will have the volume around 2-3 and don't expect the fan will be a problem. My Aguilar bass amp has a fan too and it's not an issue in my Studio.

      Both amps are great, but here are some done falls of each. archons effects loop has problem prs said they have a fix for it. I could not get the four cable method to work because of noise. Some pedals also are so noisy in fx loop it will not work. Other than that issue amp is great. Mark 5 in my opinion doesn't get the classic rock and blues as the archon, but the are both great. archon cost less. Hope that helps

      Thanks for the prompt reply. I don't have much use for fx loops, so I don't see that being an issue. Is there a big difference in mid to high gain between the two amps? And do you think either would be redundant factoring in that I already have a Dual Recto and EVH?

    Hi man, how you feel the EVH 5150 III 50 watts in comparison with the rectoverb 25? Because, I have the EVH and feel this like too thin and strident, very bright for me. But, I not know if this change with the 100 watts, the point is, is very tight, thin and strident or bright, not have that punch or full body like a 100 watts. I thinking in change this amp and buy a Mesa Rectoverb 25. You think that is a great option?

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому

      I think the rectoverb has a fuller sound and is less fuzzy. It does bus and rock better and takes pedals better, but it is not a big difference. They are close.

      @justicesword4103 9 років тому

      Phillip McKnight Thanks man, but, I believe that to play alternative metal and hard rock, I think that I need a 100 watts head, because, the EVH is very loud, but, not is the loud, is THE TONE that I'm looking, the fuller sound, headroom and punch of a 100 watts. And I'm thinking do a good choice. With 1300$ usd in USA, what you recommend me buy? not strident, not very bright, not too tight, not thin, a head fuller sound, with low end, articulate sound, with punch and high gain distortion and normal clean.

    Good Morning Phillip McKnight, I own the 5150iii head and 212 cab, I notice that you have a great selection of amps and have played through many, must be so cool. I am considering the Mark V Combo! Let me share with you what I need to get out of and amp, My styles are from Jason Aldean to WhiteSnake In The Steel Of The Night. Where I live there's nowhere close to try out the Mark V or as that goes top end Amps. What Amp would you recommend? If you can help me on this I would be more than thankful, Once again thanks.

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому +1

      I love the 5150III it is a Fantastic amp. For price friendly amps, I like peavey 3120, but I really like the PRS Archon and 5150, the Mark five is great if you think you need reverb. I also love the Marshall JVM 210, 410. I just use amps for practice or jamming with friends so I do not need a lot of power. For what your doing sounds like the EVH should work, but a Marshall JCM DSL 2000 is great for those sounds as well. I think our problem now is so many amps sound great it's hard to settle for one. But in truth any one of these great amps could do the job.

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому +1

      Aunt Jemima DIY proyectos are not for every one, the LSS has a switch for killing the fan when recording with a mic, since the MK5 is e head you could simply put it in another room, but most people will not and no harm will be done to the amp if the fan is off for some hours of use.

    • @MylesJP
      @MylesJP 9 років тому

      Nicolas Rivera I guess if the whole assembly is easily accessible and there isn't any harm in running without the fan for a couple hours then I might try it. Depends on how loud it actually is and whether the mic picks it up or not.

    Most demos r about the head. What about specs about the cab? what size? what kind of speakers..10" 12" ? Celestion made in china or UK? would like to know the size of the cabinet too. it is rather smaller than the 4x12 and it is slanted, never seen slanted this size. The word Boogie was uttered by Carlos Santana when he played the prototype or already manufactured version while talking to the founder of MESA. He came up with the name Mesa out of no where, mesa is also a Spanish word for table.

    How is the Mark V 25 doing with OD pedals in front of the clean channel?

      Great, and I am past the honeymoon stage with this amp and still love it. It is coming up on one year that I have owned it and I still think it is great. I have used over two or three dozen overdrives and distortion boxes in front of it and they all have sounded very good with no issues.

      Also interested in the chords at that point. Maybe I can't work it out because it's on a 7 string ?

      Norrie Christie Sounds like a sus2 chord. I don't have a guitar on me, but I'd guess it's (going from bottom E up) E E B F# (so 0 7 9 11 from low E-G). I'll confirm later when I have a guitar though

    Phillip, were you using a compressor in front of the amp?

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому +2

      No, a very small part of the compressed sound is just how the amp sounds. But the galaxy s5 and You Tube seem to always add a compressed tone.

    How come no one ever boosts the mids on mesas???

    • @alexisd3
      @alexisd3 8 років тому +1

      +Aaron Mifsud That's exactly what I always think when I see a mesa with a graphic eq! To be fair, it doesn't sound as scooped as when you dial out the mids using the 3 band eq.

      +Alexis Gutierrez Id like to a see a demo with the mids boosted for once

    • @SgtThump
      @SgtThump 8 років тому +3

      The mark series amps have so much midrange that it sounds like an AM radio. Scooping the mids with the graphic kinda brings the mids down to "normal" levels IMO.

      hmm ok

    • @Infinighost
      @Infinighost 7 років тому +2

      Totally correct. Without the EQ engaged, a Mark pumps out almost ONLY mids, and they're so dense and insane. Great for a solo tone, but for rhythms, you almost HAVE to scoop to some degree.

    The V:25 quiet, are you insane?! It is ABSURDLY loud. Through a 2x12 it's louder than my old JCM800 full stack (2 1960 4x12s, if it matters). It is absolutely not a practice bedroom amp and absolutely is a gigging amp. On a volume of like 0.5 it's getting to the "am I annoying the neighbours" level.

    • @PhillipMcKnight
      @PhillipMcKnight  9 років тому +9

      I don't think you understand I'm talking about hiss in other words unwanted noise. I feel for a high gain amp it is not to hissy. I hope that makes more sense. I agree you could crush with the volume on this that's why I love it.

    How different is Mark V from Mark V 25? Because the small one seems to be great but most videos i've seen of the mark v, it seem to be a little more "cold". I need an amp to play live tho. I guess i'm searching for an amp from which i can get a kind of marshall distortion (which seems to me to be much warmer), maybe a fender-like clean (or something close) and the possibility to have some variety. The fact that the Mark V has all those channels with different modes and a Solo knob for a boost is very appealing to me. That to be pretty much all the variety i need. But honestly, i dislike John Petrucci's tone (probably also due to too much delay). At the same time, that mark v 25 video with Andy Timmons makes it very appealing to me. HELP!

      +tasfa10 Mark amps have mark distortion. If you want marshall like distortion, and you want a mesa, you need to look at the transatlantic, the roadking, or the stilleto ace.

  • @shawnstpierre

    There's is virtually no difference between how loud 100watts vs 25watts is. Only real difference is clean headroom is better with 100watts. 25 watts is perfectly gigable as there is almost no difference in decibel output between 25watts and 100watts tube amp. The only real increase in volume would be pairing your head with higher efficiency speakers. Say 97 decibel Celestion greenbacks vs 100 decibel V30. Then you would notice a difference. 100 watts head might even sound not as loud with a lower efficiency speaker vs a 25 watt head with a higher efficiency speakers. Higher watts doesn't equal louder amp. Also the amps eq comes into play where an eq that has more mid frequencies would cut through a mix better than one that's scooped. Lots to think about. Go for sound not watts.
