  • Welcome to our 13-part series on how to master the art of hand porting! In this comprehensive guide, we will delve deep into the intricacies of porting the Toyota 2JZ-VVTi cylinder head. Discover why hand porting triumphs over CNC'd methods and unravel the significance of velocity optimization in driving our inertia mechanism.
By meticulously hand porting the 2JZ-VVTi cylinder head, we unlock the true potential of our engine. Throughout this series, we'll shed light on how this technique allows us to achieve unparalleled volumetric efficiency (VE), exceeding 100% of the cylinders' swept volume.
Why choose hand porting? We'll unveil the secrets behind this age-old, yet highly effective approach. While CNC'd methods offer precision, hand porting provides an artistic touch that maximizes airflow and enhances overall engine performance.
Moreover, our focus on velocity optimization brings about a revolution in the realm of inertia supercharging. As we dig deep into the subject, you'll understand how this technique plays a pivotal role in feeding inertia and supercharging our engine, leading to remarkable VE improvements.
Join us on this transformative journey as we equip you with the knowledge and expertise required to unlock the full potential of your Toyota 2JZ-VVTi cylinder head. Stay tuned for each episode, where we'll cover various aspects of hand porting, delving into tips, techniques, and everything you need to achieve unparalleled performance.

Good stuff. I’ve been porting heads for a while and really appreciate the chance to learn the right way! 😄
Have a 2.0 liter in a racing Miata now. This series should be perfect for that, minus two cylinders!

I'm glad to help, and yes, lots of this will cross over to most twin cams.

Got the head done and installed.
Pulls pretty hard from 5.5k to 7k rpm

We use the Suhner machines. Not cheap, but I see 15 years out of a machine, no problems.

Is there any benefit to making one intake port flow better than the other?
I’ve heard that doing this can give some benefits of swirl as well as the tumble, so it’s a big power increase even at lower rpm.
David Vizard called it “poly quad” and somebody said that Honda has done it.

Yeah, definitely, mate. I personally think that's why our hand ported heads slap any CNC'd oem head every time. There's always little difference between L and R ports, which will promote some bias flow, which leads to swirling into the combustion chamber.
If we like at how little the coriarlis effect is, yet it directly dictates which way storms will turn each side of the equator. It's in the 0.04G range.
