In light of our recent supply and demand gun gripe, I had several youtubers ask me "What if I don't want to buy a black rifle and pay out a lot of money"
The truth of the matter is that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good gun. You don't have to have a black rifle to be a good rifleman. Yes, an AR-15 or solid M1A can be a force multiplier in the proper hands, but it does not mean that you cannot properly defend yourself with the guns we show in this video. I understand that a lot of people's emotions are on high right now and with good reason. Some of us are unemployed, but it still doesn't mean we don't need protection. Some of us do not make a lot of money, but it doesn't mean you still don't need a firearm for protection. Some of us (myself included) refuse to pay the outrageous prices that black rifles seem to demand at the current time. What we have seen, is that things are getting a little better. This past Saturday (the day after this video was recorded) we had a swarm of customers coming in from the local gun shows very disappointed with the prices that the vendors are charging on black rifles still. My prediction is that this gun ban business will blow over and hopefully everything will be back to normal by the middle of the year. I kind of miss the days of $199 Saiga 12 shotguns...

I've seen that exact mossberg 500 fail unfortunately. it was able to be fixed fairly easily but in a life and death situation it would've ended very badly. which is why I have always stuck with remington 870s. the lift arms on the 500 collapsed inside and a gunsmith had to completely disassemble it.

I'd say the Mossberg 702 plinkster is worth mentioning too. They can be had for under $200, sometimes under $100 used, they're nice and light, accurate, they come in many finishes, your kids and wife can shoot it, it holds 10 rounds of .22LR, you can put a scope on it, it is basically built on a Marlin Model 60 action. Great rifle.

I bought my 5th Mosin on Friday. The supply is starting to dry up here in Ohio because people are quickly realizing the effectiveness and economy of the Mosin-Nagant platform. You can get a 440 round spam can of surplus ammo at gun shows for $90 or less. They are cheaper to shoot than a 9mm pistol by far and they are cannons to boot. You cannot beat this firearm for it`s sheer power and economy at the 7.62 caliber level. These are great guns!

@@behappy5869 they just hate comparisons, I know enough Glock fanboys and they're my friends. Not a big deal. I buy what I like and they buy glocks. Guns shouldn't be a source of division. This is one area I believe that diversity is good. I'll still give them shit while I pull out my Beretta and hit amazing groups and they at least hit the paper with their glocks.

One gun Ive yet to see on any of your lists are SKS's. Those guns are just down right reliable. Easy to maintain and readily available. Ammo is out there leg work, yes. But it is out there. Lots of readily available upgrades, and the tapco mags work with a little follower work. with iron sights, your good out to 250 yards. With a good scope, you can get out to 300-350 if you spend the time to work on sighting.

Although there ARE some good semi-autos to be had. Ruger makes a nice, solid rifle in the Mini series, chambered in 5.556x45 or 7.62x39 (mini-14 or Mini-30, respectively) It's capable of mounting a scope and all the fancy rails and toys you want, you can add a folding or collapsible stock (I believe they also make a bullpup kit for it) and there are hi-cap magazines made for it, where hi-cap magazines can be had.

Be ready to clean your mosin after shooting it, though, cause it's usually corrosive and the residue can't be left in the chamber or bore too long.

Most lever action guns have a tubular magazine. Need to use flat point or round point bullets. A pointed one is likely to set off the one ahead of it under recoil. It will be a chain reaction from there. Also, the action is not near as strong as a bolt so the bolt action can shoot more powerful rounds. You can still get lever guns in 30 30, 44 magnum, 357 magnum 22 and possibly more. I just now got back from shooting my Winchester 9422.

He was not saying that anyone necessarily needs to be able to hit anything at 300 yards in a self-defense situation, just that an AR is not necessarily needed for that. It has to do with simply being able to hit what you are aiming at.
If you think you need an AR as a "survival" (shtf/wrol) rifle, he showed that even the 100+ year old mil-surp bolt-action rifles are often more than good enough for that purpose.

  • @ljodnster

I personally started with a Mosin. I liked it as my first gun because it was cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, and fun to shoot. It's not likely to bring any sort of legal headaches if a gun ban does pass. With Archangel's new stock I'm excited because it will have removable ten round mags. Another benefit of starting out on a higher caliber like the 7.62x54R is that scaling down I find myself super comfortable with semi auto on even the 7.62x39. Another excellent choice would be a Mossberg 500.

  • @MrDakotapotts

We can't find .40 S&W or .380 auto hardly anywhere including gun shows and major retailers. Even our range sells out in no time. We finally found a little store that has it and bought 3 or 4 boxes of each but we can only go to the range about once a month and shoot 50-100 rounds out of each because we just can't find it anywhere.
Was at Gander Mtn. earlier, 12 gauge was practically falling into the aisle they had so much.

  • @AdamLProductions
    @AdamLProductions 11 років тому

You guys are spot-on. People don't need a $4,500 Colt AR-15 fully-chromed and tacti-cooled to the point where it borders bling for self-defense. Just about ANY firearm, .22LR included, can be incredibly effective.
Hell, I'd say that the weapon people shoot most and find the most comfortable is going to be the best weapon for them. With ammo prices, a .22LR is actually very viable given people will be more apt to blow hundreds of rounds of it since it's way cheaper than the alternatives.

There are 100s of reasons why a "high capacity" magazine is useful. For example on our family farm and hunting lease we have a very bad hog problem and they end to get together in groups. Usually 10-15 hogs at a time and there is no time to make a magazine change when we kill them because they run and scatter all over the place so to take out 5 or 6 of them at a time it usually requires about 20-30 rounds of ammo. If we don't kill the hogs then they tear up our land that our family lives off of.

the Lever action is another great option. a 30-30 makes a dandy defensive rifle...you just have to be more deliberate with your shots...which you should be doing anyway.

Hey Eric, do you guys do restorations on old guns? A buddy of mine has a 193? Arisaka that's gonna need to be blued, and he'll probably want it glass bedded as well. The furniture is in OK shape, but he may want to keep it that way.

Glock 17s are hard to find. The Zip 22 is a crap gun. Most guns that shoot .22 lr are still readily available. Most shotgun are easy to find along with the ammo. The Mosin Nagant along with the ammo are still very available. For rifles, I prefer a Mauser 98 type rifle, and for pistols I like the Sig 226 or a 6" revolver. Accuracy and power is better than spray fire.

Great video. Mosin is a great gun with lots of fire power. Have two. 22LR is also great to have in rifle and pistol. THanks for the insight.

Very good vid guys. Kinda touched on my own philosophy about bolt actions, but it's not like we've got much of a choice between bolt and semi auto in my part of the world away.

You list 3 handgun calibers, but only one relatively weak rifle caliber. I personally wanted a .223 because it seemed like one of the more readily available and useful small rifle rounds (until a few months ago).
I would happily trade any 2 of the pistol sizes you list for a .223 if I were stuck choosing between them.

Love the Mosin- I can consistently hit inside the 8 ring at 100+ yards with iron sights. Looking for an original PU sniper rifle (without being gouged) to add to my collection.
You're right- you don't NEED to spend $1,500 or more for an effective rifle.
"Be proficient with your weapons system" - that's the key.
Really liking the videos- keep up the good work!

The lowest Ive seen Tapco mags lately is 25 bucks and that was at a local shop, but overall, yes, prices are up across the board. Tapcos will be cheaper than other AK mags because their supply is a little ahead of everyone elses, imported AK mags included.

20 gauge I would go with #4 better penetration if you cant use buck or slugs. Remmington Express is good ammo, hits hard. Dont use handloads for self defense lol. I have never had a centerfire factory round not work and I have had lots of handload duds.

In the Chicagoland area (for me at least) the 9x18 Makarov ammo is very hard to find in brick and mortar stores ($26 for a box of 25 rounds!). Luckily it is cheap online, if I order ammo through friends outside of Cook county.

Mark Kruk In a pinch, your 9x18 Makarov will chamber .380 but it will be somewhat less accurate with that ammo.Still,if you really need that gun for defense and can't find 9x18mm,.380ACP will be fine up close.

Sorry you live in such a horribly un-gun friendly place. I would never want to live in Hawaii, SoCal, New York, Maryland, DC, Massachusetts, or Chicago. But hey, least the rest of the state loosened up with shall issue, right?

I know, right?I'm glad I live in a southern, shall issue state where pretty much everyone has guns and it's no big deal.I like the fact that I can walk into a gun store and buy whatever I choose, with no waiting period,no silly 1 gun a month rule,no high capacity magazine ban,etc.....In both my home state and where I live now you can even own class 3 weapons. And the Walmart near my house always has M-4s and other military style weapons(semi-auto only of course) and plenty of spare mags and ammo to go with them.Damn I love 2nd Amendment friendly states.Glad to live in the south. This weekend I think I'll grab my 1911 and MAK 90 and go unload a few hundred rounds in the woods.:)

Get an SKS if you have the funds, but if you are looking for an alternative get the mosin, hands down the most accurate rifle I have shot and like they stated its a good self defense weapon.

Yeah, i hear ya.. I don't see anything wrong with an older gun though,. I had a lee enfield and it was honestly fantastic. 10rd mag and with the irons from a bench, I could shoot (with mine with my reloads) about 6" groups at 400 yards. That is fantastic and a fast bolt to boot. The only reason I got rid of it was it was too expensive to shoot, even reloading.. But I do agree with you. I just think people don't appreciate practice.. ha ha Practice is worth more than anything you can buy

.40 caliber handguns are also a major sell. Shotguns are on a buying frenzy, most dealership are almost empty on their inventory. They do not know when are they getting resupply.

While you're at it, you could throw a couple of .380ACP in the mag too. They'll fire just fine. Probably won't cycle - and the brass will be FUBAR - and you probably won't hit what you're shooting at.. but that doesn't mean you can't do it.

I liked the guns you posted, especially the K-31 which I was really considering. I really want to try and get a surplus Russian SKS, though. I don't even care if I need to clean all the cosmoline off. The thing is I'm not sure what the prices should be, especially with all the fluctuations going on. I know they used to be in the $100-$200 range. What would you say would be a good price on a surplus Russian/Yugo SKS? Is the drop in quality worth the drop in price for a Chinese SKS?

  • @Prometheus203
    @Prometheus203 11 років тому

You are correct. No matter how good a person is with a pump, lever, break, bolt action or revolver they will ALWAYS be at a significant disadvantage to someone armed with a modern semi-automatic weapon. A good example is the M1 Garand and the advantage it gave US troops over the bolt guns of the axis. The axis rifles had similar capacity and capability and both sides had training, however the higher rate of fire, ability to maintain a sight picture and easy reloads won the war for the allies.

Good job, gentlemen. I agree with what you say about just being proficient/competent with whatever weapon one has. I agree that because one may not have an AR/AK or some other 'tacticool gizmo' that they are vulnerable. Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm so glad you guys just talk facts. Your channel, and other channels, have inspired me to post firearms videos with just the facts. Thank you for all of your labors.

Oh and I wanted to note that I'm in CA, so my realistic rifle options are rather limited. That's why I'm looking at the nice surplus rifles like the Nagant, SKS, K31, and the other fixed mag/lower capacity rifles. Also the ammo price is a nice selling point for the SKS, even if it is corrosive. I clean my guns at an almost OCD level.

Lol if only they had tried shooting that .22 zip gun before this video... Those things are actually kinda collector pieces now because of how terrible they are and that they basically took down a prominent gun company.

.22 are decent but no ammo where in at or limited to 1 box per person per day, if you can find it. I did find the survival rifle (200$)shoots good and can hide it in a pack very well

I went to my local range and I rented a glock 17 and it failed to feed and eject. Does my range just not take care of their rentals or what? Also had a 38 special revolver that failed to fire twice. People say that revolvers never fail but I witnessed a glock and a revolver fail twice.
