- Pat Paulsen tells the story of The Smothers Brothers. Then Dan Rowan and Dick Martin of Laugh-In join in on the fun on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

I met Pat Paulson at a bar in Denver in 1982 we talked for 1 hour ,what a nice guy and funny!
Pat Paulson for President!
Term limits are an impediment… and death.
I remember that “campaign “, lol from’68 I believe.
I wrote his name on my last two write in ballots ☮️😎
I wish I still had my Pat Paulson For President T-shirt I got at Woolworths!
@@debrabrabenec3731 Too funny! Mine was from Shop-ko😃
I still have his Pat Paulsen for President book! He was such a unique talent.
Television was worth watching back then.
I don't remember this sequence, but this was a lot of fun. Pat Paulsen was so underrated as a comedian.
I don't either, and it seems like I would, because we were faithful followers of the show, and this was quite a land mark episode with "Rowan and Martin" showing up at the end..I wonder if this was never broadcast because it seems quite surprising that R&M from another network would be allowed to be on their show. I have a very good memory for things like this and I am sure that I would remember it...
Pat was one of my favorite comedians on this show. He left this life far too soon.
@@rejoyce318 Indeed. He was a very talented man.
Laugh in, the Smother's Brother's so many talented cast members, way ahead of their time.
*Smothers
Never more than now.
Pat Paulsen for PRESIDENT.
Wow! The credits for Rowan and Martin are incredible (at 5:11) Steve Martin, Rob Reiner, Mason Williams etc
and Bob Einstein was Super Dave Osborne, brother of Albert Einstein, who changed his name to Albert Brooks
Those were the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour writers. As was this show clip.
it was such a great show.
The Smothers Brothers, Pat Paulson, Rowan & Martin, "look that up in your Funk & Wat's", "Say goodnight, Dick", the Flying Fickle Finger Of Fate Award, Herman & Sally, The Slithery Dee....good god, I wish I could be a kid again.
They were soooooo good!!!!
I loved both the Smothers and Rowan and Martin. They were pretty progressive for their day.
When I was in Vietnam in 1967, my girlfriend sent me a “Paulsen for President” bumper sticker. I wrote her, “Who the hell is Pat Paulsen?” He got well known while I was in the Army and I’d never heard of him. Just looked him up so it must have been in early 1968 when she sent me the bumper sticker.
I loved Pat Paulsen. When he was running for President I sent him $1 for his campaign. A few weeks later I received a letter from Pat saying he couldn’t accept my money. That made him infinitely more worthy of the office than all the candidates who do nothing but take money. I still have Pat’s nice letter and the same dollar I sent to him.
I never missed an episode of the Smothers Brothers show. It was one of the best shows on TV. It was sad they were cancelled for purely political reasons.
If your dollar bill is a 1963 Barr dollar that would make it even more special. Google it! Info I found says,
A Barr dollar is a 1963B $1 Federal Reserve note signed by former Secretary of the Treasury Joseph W. Barr. Barr served as treasury secretary for only 28 days, the shortest term on record. He served from Dec. 21, 1968, to Jan. 20, 1969, and signed only the $1 bill. @@MovieMakingMan
Pat Paulsen wouldn't have been able to go to his presidential inauguration because Monday was his bowling night.
(paraphrasing a line from his comedy LP "Pat Paulsen At The Ice House")
Wow! The announcer at the end mentions Bob Einstein, who later became well known as Super Dave Osborne. Would love to see his early stuff.
And Officer Judy
Einstein was a great comedy writer for many shows. I loved him as Super Dave and never missed his shows.
It's all here on UA-cam!
Pat was super funny guy!
😂😂😂😂😅...his flat affect adds to his being hilarious!
The standing redondo was also my track event.
5:22 Writers include Steve Martin, Rob Reiner
Thanks.
Rob Reiner has really turned out to be a communist. Sad..... I guess Archie was right about him all along....lol.
Pat Paulsen for president! Now that I am old enough to
Vote!
Tommy was a hunk. Not to mention a genius.
Agreed
No shit! That pic of Tommy at 1:05 ...WOOF!
I was a teen when their show aired. I always thought Dickie was sooo cute. It took years for me to figure out who was the really hot one between the two of them. They are both sweet guys today as geezers.
Tommy was dyslexic (and showed signs of having ADHD, imo.) He was driven and hyperfixated on being a successful entertainer, but he had difficulty deferring to people who thought they were his bosses.
He would have showed the same self-motivation to his other pursuits, including athletics.
I was always a Tommy fan. Irl, I probably would have been more comfortable with Dickie, but I could relate to Tom. 😏☺
Tommy was underrated in his looks. I thought he was alot more handsome. Tom aged well too.
I would vote for Pat Paulen today. Would be better than what we have been getting lately, He actually had write in votes.
There are lots of great politicians out there.

Years later Bill Maher’s politically correct was cancelled due to the Bush regime trying to stifle the voices of dissent.
Bob Einstein (Super Dave) played officer Judy and his brother Albert Einstein (Albert Brooks) was one of the funniest comedians ever.
Oh thank you Don Pardo, thank you my friends (when Art Fleming hosted Jeopardy) nostalgic moment
I have some smothers brothers CDs and I still watch them on UA-cam on occasion. Grew up with them.

I don't think so. Maher was cancelled by the left because he said the 9/11 terrorists weren't "cowards" . I don't remember the exact wording but he said he didn't think they could be considered "cowards" if they knowingly gave their lives flying themselves into a building..... all hell broke loose after that...
4:43 Tom and Dick look a little different tonight.
LOL! 🤣😂🤣
Had to watch SB or you had nothing to talk about in school the next day.
I would love to see him as president!
I forgot that Steve Martin wrote for them until the credits rolled!
Rest In Peace Tommy .
Mom Always Liked You Best!
“The standing Redondo” 😂
Next week's guests; Kate Smith, Mason Williams (Classical Gas), and the Jefferson Airplane. When TV wasn't watered down to a thousand channels.
To think, this was all subversive humor back in the day. Oh, for those days.
I had forgotten the Rowan & Martin bit. But wasn't Tommy supposed to say, "say goodnight, Dick!"?
We cannot stand Pat.
Paulson for President.
The good old days when a celebrity running for President was treated as the joke it was.
Bob Einstein was Super Dave Osborne, brother of Albert Einstein, who changed his name to Albert Brooks
Remember that Tommy was actually the smart one. But I suspect their mom did like Dick best (he was the baby). My mom used to say that she loved all of us boys the same (four of us), but we all knew the truth.
She liked Sherry the best.
For a good laugh.... Trump should have had the Smothers Brothers on his show, so he could tell them both..."Your Fired!" Ha ha.... what a great laugh that would have been....
That's funny, That's not funny . I know but it sure is successful . 🤣😅
