I wouldn't be surprised if it's the gritting salt causing a lot of it. Even here in North Yorkshire I only saw the gritters out a few times this winter, I'd bet they're out a lot more in Scotland.
My car came from Yorshire and within 6 month living in Aberdeen the amount of rust it had was surprising. I rarely washed the thing as I just needed a beater and paid £1100 for it. The rust was easy to look after. Nothing that a wire brush and a spray can can't fix. I am looking at a new car but there isn't much around locally that's much good.

I own a Rio of the next generation and I absolutely love it. It is my first car and its brilliant. In particular, it is a 2015 Mk3 facelift Rio 3 1.4 diesel, meaning it is a fairly well-specced model with very welcomed amenities like sat nav, DAD radio, a reversing camera, heated seats, privacy glass, and electric folding mirrors. For the size, the interior space is used very well, comfortably seating four adults, with enough room for me, 6ft 4", to sit in the rear with enough headroom, that is with the front seats moved forward. Visibility is also excellent with a lot of glass a clear view out the back, helped by quite a long dashboard, giving a spacious feel. I would highly recommend one to someone looking for a Fiesta alternative, they are great value for money!
That is a really cool car, reliable, cheap to keep and repair, it does not burn a lot of gas, it takes you everywhere without spending that much, it is a good one here in America
This kind of stuff is perfect for me! I live in Barbados and come to the UK from around June to September. This would last me the four months and get me around to meet up with friends and stuff. And then even if I scrap it afterwards, it still works out cheaper than a hire car

Also, and don’t know if you’ve noticed this too, Scottish cars aren’t as well equipped as southern cars.
I lived in the UK for 7 years without a car, and this cheap car was a dream, to be honest back then Didn't buy one back in the time because if insurance costs,
Jesus, I'm here just 30 seconds after the video was put up. Hope you had a great weekend. I did love my Kia Cee'd 1.6 petrol that I bought in 2017 brand new and sold it with 87500mi.
I'm from Scotland and you're absolutely right about Scottish cars. However, any registration with a 'P' or above, after the S, means its been registered in Dundee or North of there and will be especially bad due to the even colder, and saltier climate than the Central Belt. All my cars have spent the majority of their lives in England although one is aluminium which is great.
Man, I had a Hyundai Getz 1.5 crdi, I loved that car. It was actually quite sporty but rusted like crazy. But a cool budget first car nonetheless, practical also
I've had 3 car's from Arnold Clark's and the first thing I did when I got home was rip that crappy yellow sticker off the back window lol ..enjoyed the video as always cheers Matt
Making the comparison, here in Japan, if you just need basic transport, pick up a Toyota Probox wagon at auction, assuming you have a mate with auction membership. Unless it's a diesel you won't pay more than 100,000 yen (essentially 500 pounds), plus unavoidable auction charges. The Probox (great name) is the car to put a junior salesman on the road. The street cred of a Safeway shopping trolley, but essentially basic transport assuming it has some shaken (MOT). In Japan the Shaken last for two years and includes road traffic act insurance. Instead of scrapping it should have been sold on for repair. Unlike Range Rover, Audi etc, Kia parts do not require a second mortgage. Fix all brakes, weld the exhaust, replace a tyre and there’s two more years in that Kia
He buys cheap cars to do content for his UA-cam Channel and not to resale on his forecourt. Very clever. Keep going brother, you'll be rich in no time.
12:30 a DOHC 16v fuel-injected cross-flow engines putting out some 120 bhp from some 1800 cc used to be hard-core, Italian-style performance specs in my youth. That you can get that in an entry-level Kia econobox still blows my mind, when I think about it.
OK guys, I am a “wannabe Brit” that’s currently an American, born and raised in Texas. I watch all of the videos that Matt posts and there is always 1 thing that blows my mind. Where do all of the odd ball tire brands come from? We don’t see them over here even if one was to shop for tires at Walmart (which I do not recommend)
Not that it would make much of a difference, but I think some of the older more unique cars (like the Navarro) could fetch more money if you sell them as spares on fb marketplace to someone that breaks them for parts. The going rate for a big suv like that would be like £400 / £500. But then again it would be better to just be done with them
I had one of these it was an 09 auto and I have to say it was such a great little car had it for 2 years and absolutely no problems great car and great on fuel people give alot of hate towards Kia but there pretty decent little cars.
Hi Matt, Well what can you do, People sell you a car on the cheap, sometimes its salvagable and you can turn it around, get it back on the road and sometimes its the complete opposite as some people are not honest. It is what it is, I'm sure if I could sell my Honda fit 2016 hybrid in UK, it would still have a lot of life left in it compared to that Rio. I am selling it for real, but the market here is very slow, thanks to cheap Suzuki Fronx. Oh well hopefully it sells eventually.
Matt, didn't you have fitted a new full set of chunky off-road tyres on the Jeep when you recently did some off-road driving fun? There has got to be some very decent money in selling them to be had from them tyres and wheels secondhand , I would have thought?
I would not of scrapped it, it had 5 months MOT left and all the faults could have been fixed in a day on the driveway, far better to sell it on for a quick £100 profit! I make a good living sorting cheap PX cars, anything with a new MOT flys out the door for a grand round here.
You're spot on with the Scottish cars. And i say that as a Scot. I actually play a little game with your vids, as soon as i see the S plate, how long it's going to be before rust is found. It's never long.... Trust me, the market up here is insane for that reason, everything is overpriced, demand far outstrips supply because everything of a certain age/price point is absolute JUNK. Cars down south that don't really rust (Thinking something like a Mk2 Octavia), find one in Scotland and if it's still alive, it'll be a patchwork quilt underneath with all the MOT bodges trying to squeeze 1 more year out it each MOT time.
I agree Matt, bought a Fiesta from Glasgow 5 years ago, one previous owner and 55k miles but lived up there for its first 11 years. I didn’t expect to still have it, had my car written off and needed something quick. Was raining obviously and it was parked on a main road so kurb meant I didn’t look underneath. It’s far worse than the same car it replaced of the same year but that was Cumbrian and much higher miles. Lesson learned and won’t do it again or take something to kneel on to inspect. Sprayed it underneath with hydraulic oil on its first MOT with myself and then did more wire brushing and rust treatment in following years but suspect it’s time is limited
Always love a cheap car, an awesome idea for you would be to go back to your roots, buy a cheap car and do it up yourself, interior, exterior, paint, maybe some mechanics/maintenance too. Would be awesome to watch you go through the process and see what you can get for it!
I remember as a kid in the 60s - before your time, Matt!, you could buy 8 Fruit Salads (or Blackjacks, same price) for a penny. Btw, if you want a mega low-mileage van for a change why not ask the owner of the Wonder Grip van if he wants to sell it? It can't have done much more than delivery mileage!
As usual, engaging thought-provoking content 🤔 Re. Rust issues mentioned @ 5.40 Ish. I'm Scottish, whoa, slow down readers, I couldn't agree more, but Matt ! the Scottish coastline is just over six thousand miles long, not including the salty, wind-swept islands. If you're buying in Scotland, like me, avoid cars that have lived near the "seaside", in other words far away from the salty air. My friend's BMW steering rack began leaking well before 80,000, after stripping down the rust inside was surprising even for the engineer, I suggested my "salt" theory, it turned out the first owner's house was at the beach conveniently close to the Golf Course🏌♂ not conclusive, but air gets everywhere.
I don't know of the 1.4, or that it even existed. But the early 1.6 (the 110hp version) is a very reliable engine. When Hyundai and Kia released a new 1.6 that had as much power as some 2.0 engines, they started to have serious issues.
I take the same approach to my mortgage. Really low rate, so I focus on investing. Every now and then, I do get the urge to reconsider that, but I know the numbers favour the investing approach.
Bought one of these on a 55 plate 8-9 years ago from a dealer for £400 as it needed both front wheel bearings sorting. Took me a Saturday to sort it myself. It was supposed to be a stop gap but it was such a hood little car and cost nothing to run, we kept it for 2 years. The fuel tanks are steel and Kia built in a neat water trap on top of bloody tank. It rusted through and a new tank was £550 at the time - none available from a scrapper anywhere, presumably as they all rusted. Really annoyed me to have to scrap an otherwise perfectly good car for one very stupid issue.
In my 20s i'd have loved a car like that and just done it up bit by bit. I did just that with a much worse Peugeot 304 and turned it into a really nice car for two years, and it sold well. To me thats a fixer upper for somebody, though not really a trade car.

It was interesting listening to you scrapping the cars, it’d be cool to leave that bit in on other cars you scrap
Take the roof rack off the Nissan before you scrap it, you could get some money for it.
Always love a cheap car, an awesome idea for you would be to go back to your roots, buy a cheap car and do it up yourself, interior, exterior, paint, maybe some mechanics/maintenance too. Would be awesome to watch you go through the process and see what you can get for it!
these are my favourite type of your videos Matt
Mine too!
@@HighPeakAutos I love the way you know its a 2 spec
You have to admire Matts optimism. And let's face it he is easy on the eyes❤😂😂
Thanks! :)
To be fair it’s not a loose Matt as you know😉great video
As usual, engaging thought-provoking content 🤔
Re.
Is this a new camera set up Matt? As a Scot, you make a valid point. We put a lot of salt on the road up in Scotland.
Well Matt you atleast wanted to save it and thats what matters.
Great video and work as always Matt! :D
Agree 100% on Arnold Clarke stickers. If they won't supply a car without one I wouldn't buy it..
Would be a perfect export car to somewhere that does not have MOT requirements.
At my yard at work they buy scrap cars watching them load them with free lander they just push them on the lorry it’s brutal but fun to watch
Can you do a vehicle score check on that Wonder Grip van? I wonder if it’s still on delivery miles !
In my 20s i'd have loved a car like that and just done it up bit by bit. I did just that with a much worse Peugeot 304 and turned it into a really nice car for two years, and it sold well. To me thats a fixer upper for somebody, though not really a trade car.
That was the first thing I done after I bought a car from Arnold Clark 😂
Loving this positivity Matt 👍🏻
I've bought from Arnold Clark before, ripped that obscene sticker off right on the forecourt 😂
You need to jump up and down on the bonnet of the scrap cars in in the inbetweeners!!
Totally agree with the "S" plate (Scotland). Its been my experience as well.
My wife likes it when I watch your videos while she goes to sleep, as she finds your voice and introduction music 😅
Gutted to see a Kia Rio going to the scrap yard because they're great cars. It's clearly never been looked after, even before the nightmare list of failures and advisories - how does someone allow their car to fail its very first MOT FFS 😮😂
Couldn’t be more spot on, my 2010 CR-Z was/still is a bargain, but it’s SN10 reg, and the underneath is rusty as hell and slowly going 😂
Hate those yellow Arnold Clark stickers, too. Looks cheap and reminds me of timber specialists Arnold Laver.
Just realised my micra is Scottish 😂 but solid old motor thankfully according to MOT history love a cheap car video Matt so entertaining entertaining
I needed a cheap car Quick to get me to work and back When oil pump gave up on my car And i brought a kia rio estate 2003 for £300 pound and only a mile away dealer need to get rid 5 month MOT And in the end i kept it for about 16 months Put fresh mot with only 1 advisory for corroded rear silencer
Interesting about the Scottish reg my wife bought a 2010 kia soul a few yrs bk was lil a piece off swish cheese 😂
