@spagandtuna I will agree to disagree with you on this one as I KNOW I will disagree strongly on your opinions on 'Marnie' (though I'm still unsure of its relevance to the merits of Stage Fright) which I think is even more misunderstood. I will say I have met Tippi Hedren (quite recently) and she still maintains she owes a great debt to Hitchcock - regardless of whatever happened (or didn't) on the set. Personally I always go on the merits of the film over the actions of its creators anyway.

@spagandtuna Why? When a character in a film relays events as they happened, why is it a petty trick when the film-maker visualises the events as the character describes them? WHY is it cheating to show the lie as it's described? The point is the flashback is being described by a liar and the audience are lied to as well. So when all is revealed at the end we realise the trick! And I don't understand the relevance of making comments on his "behavior around the film Marnie". Please elaborate.
@f Simply because in the absence of any other clues or data for the viewer to consider, he is held prisoner by this device. If this technique was but one of the factors for the viewer to consider I'd say, o.k., but here you have a captive audience of a single-focused presentation in a mystery, lots of luck enjoying the ride on that one. With respect to Marnie, Hitchcock's construction of the Connery character is shameful as was his real life behavior toward Hedren both while and after filming.
