    Leslie Hawkins - backing vocals
    Summary:
After years of life on the road and with their role models, the Allman Brothers Band, struggling to survive the deaths of two of its most distinctively talented members, today Lynyrd Skynyrd has become the quintessential Southern Rock band. Under the leadership of frontman and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, the group's melodic lyric driven ballads and power driven hard rockers would catapult the group into one of the most popular touring bands in the world. The group's distinctive guitar attack, combined with an overtly defiant and rebellious attitude, gave them a cultural identity that would help make songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" into anthems of American rock music and staples of FM radio right up to the present day.
Headlining a bill that also featured the Outlaws, this Winterland recording captures Lynyrd Skynyrd following the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. This was during a transitional phase for the band, following the departure of guitarist Ed King, but prior to his replacement, Steve Gaines, coming on board. The band was carrying on as a six-piece unit, augmented by the Honkettes on backing vocals.
This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs.
Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best.
The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close.
"Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music.

Unlike the version on One From The Road this is an unproduced, raw recording that shows precisely how utterly brilliant this band were as live performers. They needed no mixing, no editing. no production. This is Lynyrd Skynyd in the flesh. It's a historical record. This is real. This is soul. If it doesn't hit you in the heart then check your pulse.

I know what you are trying to say but I assure you they would have had all of that and more, it is just impossible to do such a live performance without good mixing and a solid production.. it was bands like this that invented and perfected all that stuff 👍

@@marksmusicCCNo. Look into it, they practiced over and over and over. By the time they played it live or studio it was as second nature as walking. Thank Ronnie for that. If you want more details backing that up just let me know. Your comment is just a guess and something true of other bands. I’d like to see if you know who has the copy of all Ronnie’s lyrics.

@@BlueDays_BlackKnights Er no I am not guessing believe me, 50 years as a musician you do learn a thing or two..
of course they practiced over and over, it is a rather common thing for musicians to do actually...
What I am saying is that you can not put on a show in front of 1000s of people without mixing, a solid production and a lot of sound engineering.. Without any of that they would sound like shit.
They are not playing in the backyard or in some garage.. Do you really think they just walk onto the stage with a 50 watt Marshal and jam away LMAO

"If you want to know who Ronnie Van Zant was, just take the lyrics of any six songs that he wrote and you got Ronnie." - I heard that quote in the Rockumentary on the band and it rang true. He was one of Rock's great and underappreciated songwriters. All of his words and lyrics carried a powerful, but simple message. Rock In Peace - Ronnie, Steve, Cassie and the rest of the band.

The real tragedy of Ronnie's death is the future loss of great music and lyrics that the band was about to produce. The Street Survivors lp is their best work and Ronnie and Gaines were going to be a great team of songwriters. They only scratched the surface.

Almann BB were closer to jazz (original lineup) and Lynyrd to rock and country.. while retaining a southern approach.. both. They wrote and played the memorable pieces in a virtuoso and heartfelt manner... I've been listening to them since 1980... both, but in some ways I have to admit that Lynyrd ultimately remained fresher and more time-tested.

Meeting every night after getting homework completed and listening to tapes of lynyrd sknyrd was a fantastic childhood memory. This group united our entire street and neighborhood. Every kid on the street would come out and listen regardless of season or weather..
The day in 1977 broke our hearts. We loved the music so much. Tuesday's gone was the only song where everyone just listened. No one sang.
But we still met every night and listened. I finally saw sknyard in atlantic city, nj weeks before Billy Powell passed. It was the completion of the cycle that was interrupted in 1977. Thank all of you so much!

Lynrd skynrd were the greatest band ever and accomplished so much in their short time here.

Ronnie so reminds me of my late older brother Donnie. On the outside, my brother was a tough-as-nails, hard-ass partier kind of guy. Underneath, he was a very emotional, and super intelligent kind of guy. Now at sixty, in some ways, I am happy that he never lived to see the year 2020. He would have been so devastated in seeing what the world has now become

This song in particular, and many others actually brings me to a certain kind of religious experience when I close my eyes and let the words and melody was over me. I was one to be counted among the lucky to have seen Lynyrd Skynyrd live in their heyday. They knew how to rock it, great lyrics, great music. They didn't need to put on costumes, make-up, and dance around the stage. They entertained their audience simply by playing the best music this country had to offer at that time. The Allman Brothers were my first musical love and remain my favorite group, but Skynyrd played 2nd fiddle to no-one. They were the real deal. Although Ronnie didn't play an instrument, his loss was a devastating one, as he was an excellent song writer, composer, singer, and the defacto leader of LS. His loss was comparable to the loss of Duane for the Allman Brothers, and to the music world in general. Certain people simply can not be replaced. LS was as was many great bands were, the collective being so much greater than the individual pieces added separately. All we can do is enjoy the music they created, and be eternally grateful for it. I challenge any male to listen to Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama and not feel a rush of adrenaline come over them, to drive and not feel the urge to depress your foot on the accelerator pedal, or to want to kick ass.
