I really appreciate this video. It's very reassuring and interesting to watch videos where someone pushes themselves. Also, the color pallet really says burned-down forest full of ashes and bones. Nice stuff!

This came out looking so cool. Well done with the monochromatic colour scheme. I never really thought to build up the greys using browns and greens but it works so well! The blood looks PERFECT too! NOICE!!!

That monochrome paint set would be great for Call Of Cthulhu minis, since it gives me major noir vibes

That figure came out so good! I think we all get into that "funk" when painting. Sometimes you just need to walk away for a bit and come back later after working on another area. Your end choices look amazing. Keep up the great work.

It's really comforting as an almost complete beginner painter to hear that well-established and very practiced painters are still looking for new things, and ways to improve. And even that sometimes frustration takes over, but you keep going. It turned out so sick at the end of everything! Those models are so cool, and the black and grey scale is awesome!

Depending on the pigment, black pigment is not pure black. There are often blue and brown tones. Bone black, for example, is traditionally made from burnt animal bones. The Zorn palette used ivory black (made from burnt ivory) as its source of blue tones. Pigments tend to have mass tones and under tones. Sometimes you can't get a sense of those undertones until you mix them. Try mixing yellow with black to see whether your black has blue in it, for example.

Dave! Fantastic job. You’re a Painter Class D&D level or two above me, and the honesty with which you processed this model really speaks to me. I, like many others, have been in a funk lately, and since I use this hobby as a self-care creativity therapy, I can appreciate trying something new but then just going back to what you know and love. My ADHD reigns supreme right now as my hobby area is littered with the partly completed remnants of more than 100 miniatures in various states of assembly and painting, from 3D printed partial armies to headless ork kommandos. To make a long post short (too late), thanks for making this video and others like it. It keeps me going when times get rough, and I learn multiple things every time! Also, keep the beard! It looks awesome. IN THE GRIM DARK PRESENT THERE IS ONLY BEARD.

Q: Dave... i wanna start mini painting but i'm afraid. you see, i only have 1 arm. my other arm is paralyzed. my elbow is weak and my hand does not work. is there a way to prep and paint 1 handed? or at least something to assembling a mini (mostly cut off the excess mold) so that i can glue and paint? thanks in advance bryan

Dude. You've got this. Although I don't struggle with that specifically, I know that anybody dedicated can pull anything off. If you just dive in, I'm sure you can pull some amazing stuff off. Kudos to you for trying something difficult. I wish you luck.
Edit: I know I'm not Dave. Still hope I was at least a bit helpful.

just dont do warhammer so you can skip the building phase and find something already assembled/one-piece. then something like a redgrass mini handle - they have a magnetic handle (you can put it on metal or the sticker they sell) and more importantly it can rotate easily. hell you could tape it into your bad hand and use your other hand to cup/brace it (the lil finger area of the good hand) whilst you paint. weak elbow on wither your leg or a table to provide stability. And rotation would be easy. There's a way!!

Yo, there are special tools that will help you. Especially something called "The Third Hand Tool". One of my friends has his whole right side paralysed and this helped him get into painting.

    • @jamesmiller8714
      @jamesmiller8714 2 роки тому +1

I would think that double sided tape or poster tack would be your best friends when it came to this. Maybe even a "third hand" such as is used in soldering to allow you to position things and restrict their movement with little or no effect on the finished piece. Magnets, tape, anything that would hold things still for you would probably be the most beneficial in your hobby. The mini handles that Matt spoke of would also be to great use. If you want to try before you buy on something like that I would suggest a bottle, can, anything that has enough weight that it won't move when you put bristles to mini and if you find that it is something you enjoy then drop the money. Anything that will get the pieces where you can see and work on them comfortably and hold it still is all that you need to get started. I wish you good luck in your adventure and most importantly have fun and look at figuring it out as part of the hobby instead of a limitation that it can bring, maybe even keep notes so when this is asked from someone else you can be the arbiter of wisdom.

It started out terrible and ended up being terribly awesome. Thanks for keeping the parts before you fixed it in the video. I think the instructions you were following were transcribed by a blind person as the painter tried to explain what they did to them. Once you went back to the original concept and didn't follow instructions it worked great.

I think this looks great. I feel it's important to do these kinds of technical studies occasionally in order to build our skill level. Single minis are a great subject for this kind of work because there is no need to replicate it across a squad or army; they can stand alone.

I really like the finished product. I just went through a little of the same thing with a different model as you did with this one. I had made it to the ugly middle phase, but I hadn't realized it. I've been painting minis for years, and by minis I mean space marines in the same style as GW box art. I'd never had this middle ugly step before cause I had never tried anything new. It actually turned me off so much that I didn't paint anything for a few days . After I came back with a fresh set of eyes, I suppose, I realized that all it needed was to continue the process and it ended up looking pretty ok. Thanks for capturing the struggle that you went through with this project. I think a lot of us just watch these awesome painters like Marco NJM and Ninjon and Trovarion etc...and see them create something amazing without effort almost and then we put too much pressure on ourselves. So, thanks for showing that there's a struggle to make something look awesome, sometimes.

Trying NMM armor on a Celestine conversion, following a tutorial meant for 75mm figures. And while it looks kinda ok, I'm still not happy with the result. Was about to brush it off as a learning experience and resort back to my tried and true TMM/NMM mixed style, painting over hours of work. Guess I'll try finishing some other parts first, before throwing in the towel. See if it changes anything. Thanks for the inspiration!

Some of their videos are a little old but I find Miniature Mentor is still a great resource for painting, sculpting, and even some photo taking tutorials. There is a video on monochrome painting that I found very well done. It would be interesting to hear your guys take on their library. The entire library is now available for a flat 30$ which is an amazing value. Saddly they did this because they won't be making any new videos but they are still quite detailed and high quality.

I had I cool armor mechanic that mite work in a sifi world. The idea being adding another token into the game setting that when consumed any damage that round would go into the token not hp str or armor. one token is taken per turn and negats all damage that turn. there are 2 other negative I would like to spell out to help balance this. You still have a combat roll and it impacts if you do an action that turn. Example if I activate my armor and wish to go into melee combat, I roll a 2 while my opponent gets a 3 I fail my action to move closer but I dont take damage. The other downside would come when no one attacks you. You lose a point for having that active.

First, there is nothing wrong with your painting because you are enjoying it. That's really all the matters. That said, everyone has room for improvement. I'm sure even greats like Sergio Calvo look at their miniatures and think "What can I improve next time." I don't think you can be a great painter if you don't, although you should still feel good about what you have painted. If you want to improve at painting and take the advice of some random commenter please let me know. As much as I'd love to give unsolicited advice I know it is the opposite of helpful. I don't expect a response and I've failed at running my own youtube channel where I should be teaching painting, but I'm going to offer anyway as an alternative outlet to randomly criticizing youtubers in their own channels.
