My First Gibson: Tommy Thayer of KISS

  • With a knack for theatrics and a love for the show, it's no surprise that KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer's first Gibson was a Les Paul Goldtop. Growing up idolizing the greats that played late-50s Sunburst Les Pauls such as Ronnie Montrose, Tommy knew a Gibson Les Paul was what he wanted. In this episode of My First Gibson, Tommy tells us how, thanks to a supportive mom and a local Vancouver, WA newspaper, he found a used 1973 Goldtop Les Paul Deluxe that he was finally able to call his own.

When I started getting into guitar in the late 1970s, if you had a real Gibson Les Paul or Fender Stratocaster, not a copy, you were considered royalty. My first Gibson was a Les Paul Deluxe too, ‘73 cherry sunburst, my first “good guitar.” Got it in 1980 for $400 which in those days was a ton of money for a teenager. Had some good times with that guitar, hard to believe over forty years have come and gone.

I had a guitar store in Portland in the 70's-80's, Tommy played in a band called "Black & Blue" and his day job was driving a delivery van for the family office supply business. When he had a delivery on the eastside of town he would occasionally stop by to browse, he was always very low key, respectful and polite and always looking for Gibson guitars (Les Paul juniors). I ended up selling him 3-4 Gibson guitars on time, and his word was GOLD, he always came in and made his payments on time without the usual broke musician BS stories. Soon after he was hired on the KISS road crew and the rest is history. He obviously had a very strong family upbringing which contributed to his solid character and future success.

The very best proper Les Paul and Sgs of 2021 were the 2021 Epiphone limited edition Les Paul Custom Koa and the 2021 Epiphone Modern figured Sgs hands down both are high end guitars and the craftsmanship on both are remarkable these guitars will up in Value through the years for sure..American Master builder Scott Lewis and his American and Asian luthiers at the Qingdao Epiphone facility are incredible.

As earlier comments have said, Tommy is such a kind-hearted soft-spoken guy on top of being an amazing guitar player. I would have loved to hear him flex his chops on more albums of original material beyond Sonic Boom and Monster because both of those albums are absolutely excellent. With borderline masterpieces like that under their belts, there is no excuse as to why they couldn't (or shouldn't) have been pumping out albums every other year for the last fifteen years of KISS's career.

The lead guitar player for Kiss is Tommy Thayer for sure. Im not a Kiss fan but a music fan... I see Tommy Thayer as the perfect fit for Gene, Paul... and for Kiss. Hes a great guitar player, better than Ace Frehley, he's got brains, has class... hes a better fit than Ace ever was, imo.

Here's a cool idea... Watch the video and turn off the sound and read this while the video rolls.... ready? :::: I remember as a kid playing guitar and visiting music stores and seeing all these GREAT Guitars on the walls that I could not afford... Many years later as I was bringing Peter Criss from the band KISS Pizza and Water and making sure the guys had what they needed for the show.... I fell in Love with the Les Pauls that ACE Played, and he really was a total pro and a nice guy and I kept telling myself... man... he has the best gig ever. Great Guitars... Great Band... Man I really want that. So I sucked on Paul and Genes testicles and finally got a job...and now my VERY OWN Epiphone!!! YES... I Play it LIVE to all the backing tracks, and I LOVE the fact that I can inspire other fakers out there that really can't play that great...but I stay sober and do what the Bosses (Paul and Gene) Say... and Yes I do donate to charities... But just the One's that Gene and Paul give me a thumbs up to, you know.,, when I am off the tour and can do a little of what I want to when they are not bossing me around. But YES, Thanks to GIBSON for allowing my name on a guitar that might inspire some young person to pick one up and also learn solos from Kiss Albums that I had absolutely nothing to do with. I am glad to have this LEGACY.... Thank You All!!! (especially Gene and Paul... because they gave the OKAY on this)....

I'd love to just have the money KISS has spent on hair dye alone.
