I started amateur club racing here in California in 1981. By the time I got my pro card late in 1983, Fred Merkel was riding for HRC, on VFR 750F in the AMA superbike series. My first national race was Laguna Seca in 1984, the same track where I got my first two wins in my rookie amateur season. With 10 circuits to go in the race, Fred lapped me entering the Corkscrew, then Wes Cooley lapped me going into turn seven, now called "Rainey corner". Riding my stock engine Honda 750F, I finished mid pack but it was still a fun and exiting weekend..
