  • Irish Hereford Prime farmer member T J O`Brien farms at the Horse and Jockey in County Tipperary. He has a calf to beef low-cost system which he has invested in a lot over the last five years.
He has made significant investments in improving his farm, including creating paddocks, installing water troughs, and purchasing a Rakeman 3000 grass harrow. The harrow helps rejuvenate the sward by removing dead grass, moss, and chickweed while breaking up manure, which reduces the need for nitrogen. This system has contributed to healthier paddocks and lower sickness rates in his livestock.
Since 2015, he has been part of the Green Low-Carbon Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS) to reduce his carbon footprint and support the environment. As part of this, he plants two acres of birdseed crops to provide food for wildlife, leaving the land untouched for birds and bees.
His family is heavily involved in farming. His wife, Kitty, shares the same background, and their three children often help out on the farm.
