Exclusive: ‘Midsommar’ Director Ari Aster and Stars Preview the Highly Anticipated Horror Flick

- Director Ari Aster and stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor sat down for an exclusive extended interview about Aster’s follow-up to ‘Hereditary,’ ‘Midsommar,’ ahead of the film’s first public screenings. Described as a breakup film with some serious horror elements, and set during a once-every-90-years Swedish festival where the sun never sets, the buzz is that ‘Midsommar’ is one of the most original scary movies to come along in years. Here, Aster, Pugh, and Reynor talk about the folklore that inspired the movie, the challenges of creating a horror film set entirely in sunlight, and how the movie differs from ‘Hereditary.’ Plus, they have a piece of advice for moviegoers about to take the ‘Midsommar’ ride: “Watch the walls.”

She should be nominated for her acting in it. She was intense
Star gazer Wolf that cry during the first ten minutes was haunting
She's excellent in everything. If you haven't seen Lady Macbeth you should watch it just for her performance.
@@alexwood3864 It was an insane buildup and scene...I was crying during that part because I felt the character's pain.
I agree. The crying when she finds out about her family was intense man!
A Wood that cry when all of the other girls joined in was even more haunting
imagine being the person who broke up with Ari aster. then aster releases the most infamous horror movie of all time and its about you.
Well seeing where Taylor Swift got her material for her songs.
Great work comes through things like that.
Saw proof of it through some of my friends films in my Film School cohort. Few premiered the same day mine did. Mine was pretty dark made a promise to myself not gonna write anything that dark ever again for now.
Not a place I want to go back to so Comedy it is.

@kaleel clark he's said so, yeah
Like in The Movie nocturnal animals.
Based on Hereditary and Midsommar, I can’t wait to see what is next from Aster.
Doublediamond92 apparently he’s not making horror anymore!

I heard he wants to try Dark Comedy

The irony is that I feel like these two actors actually have great chemistry in real life despite their story line in the movie.
I’m still recovering from hereditary
And here we go again

Exactly.
Same! Can't even sleep without the light off and it's been a year!
It took me six months before I decided I wanted to buy it on Blu-Ray. Almost scared to watch this one, but it's happening!
yeez, ari is an anxious dude. these horrors movies are coming from that pain, not out of sadistic pleasure.
Yeah, just looking at him in this interview he seems like a very anxious guy
True. I feel like the actors are helping him out alot.
He’s just having a hard time explaining his process and probably drawing blanks. Off the cuff, I fumble when someone asks me a simple thing like what my tattoo means. I don’t have a simple answer because of the amount of abstract thought I put into it (regrettably). Try explaining Midsommar to someone and eventually you’ll be like “just watch it”
What an emo
He's really humble
This movie was so amazing. I left the theater and was in my head completely. Contemplating if I should feel a certain way about the antagonist, but I was confused to who was the antagonist. It was a dark, beautiful film, rooted in human behavior. A masterpiece.
Another one if the greatest movies ive seen :D work of art
Beautiful displayed movie. Speechless... This guy is a damned genius.

@@lyuuy7477 He's a great director :)
I can’t wait for Florence to be in more films. She did a wonderful job.
Yelena
Dune part 2
She is absolutely 💯 amazing in everything I've seen her in -Lady Macbeth, Don't Worry Darling, this movie and Dune 2 -also maybe others I don't know about that I haven't seen. She's an incredible talent!👍👍
Ari is clearly not a confidant public speaker, and I love how Jack and Florence jump in and help him out when he’s treading water. So bloody cute.
Probably why he makes movies like he does, I like directors who direct and love their craft rather than love the spotlight.
Anyone who's picking on Ari in the comments for taking his time with his words should be ashamed of themselves. Ari suffered from a stutter as a child and I'm sure that the stress of doing well in an interview probably brings some of that back. As someone who was also a stutterer as a child and is a current writer, I have a lot of the same pausing/ stammering habits as well when I have to speak off the top of my head in a stressful situation. half of it for me is that it is stress induced and I can't help it; the other half is that as a writer every word has a place and purpose and I want to pick the perfect word every time even when I'm speaking.
To be honest I thought he was just being very cautious with details and spoilers about the film. I’d be nervous not wanting to ruin it for the audience.
Oh so ur dad is a pit bull
@@XXtriplecooltimmyXXDragon at least I have one. you obviously don't or you wouldn't be begging me for attention. sorry that your daddy didn't love you :,(((((
Nicely explained. I noticed his difficulties to answer clearly in this interview, but it has to be difficult when you're trying to convince people to watch your movie without giving many spoilers. And you have to add the stress of FILMING A FUCKING MOVIE which is a huge endeavour, trying to explain his internal process for making the story (one that seems to be very intense and confusing even for him) and probably the exhaustion for making who knows how many of these kind of interviews. I don't mind if, in that context, the guy takes his time to search the right words.
oôo What a hypocrite you are.
Just saw Midsommar. All I can say is, damn he (Ari) did it again. I've never felt anxiety, confusion, and discomfort as I did with this film. Hereditary was previously the movie that managed that. This man will go down as one of the greatest mark my words.
Apparently he wants to make a musical next. With how well the cinematography and blocking in both his movies have been, I can totally see it working. He’s 2-0 so far. Let’s see if he can keep the streak rolling.
Fat Maybe though I wouldn't put my money on it. Hereditary was fine, though felt more like a throwback/homage to 70's horror films like Rosemary's Baby and The Sentinel than anything else. Judged on it's own? As I said, it was okay but had some seriously-and unintentional I'm willing to wager-laugh-out loud moments that didn't help.
I haven't seen Midsommar yet-I'll see if I can catch it this weekend or next-and I expect to enjoy it but my expectations aren't huge (like with Hereditary I expect to like it; the questions is can it bring more).
Fat this movie had me so confused and uncomfortable it wasn’t scary it was unsettlin and weird

Saw it last night. Really engaging movie that totally sucked me in. Really enjoyed it!!
Hereditary should've been up for best picture -- that was a very weak year for movies, and Hereditary was one movie that was truly excellent.
They generally don’t go for sci-fi, horror, animated, or foreign language
@@tonywords6713-- indeed. but best picture should simply be the best picture. what a contradiction with them nominating the basically generic superhero popcorn movie Black Panther for best picture - dark knight never got nominated. You got wakanda, the most high tech nation in the world supposedly, and the warriors still fight by throwing spears. Black panther is as absurd as any super hero movie, or more so, and totally mediocre in every way. Horror movies are often the most original, you never who's going to make it to the end, they can go into weirder and more surprising territory with their plot beats.
theContainer &theContents the comic book genre never got nominated for anything as well. Plus why would the people of wakanda need to make guns when you have something simply as a spear that can stop a tank. It’s their way of life. Hereditary is Oscar worthy most of the horror genre is not.
@@thecontainerthecontents6889 black panther was excellent too
@@millsykooksy4863 no it wasnt. It was a mid level marvel movie at best. Unremarkable in every way. Infinity war had vastly smarter writing. The academy chooses nominees based on mind controlling the public and cultural agendas... the quality of the movie is barely relevent. If you are objective... its clear the vast majority of movies are complete trash creatively. Even most of the nominees. Certainly theres some consistently brilliant ppl in Hollywood like nolan, james cameron, aaron sorkin and im sure many more ppl could list... but, theres also no question that the vast majority of them are just secret society ppl who are given their place and status and jobs and never earned them and dont actually have much real talent or ability. And thats why so many movies are so repetitive and weak. And i think the system actually wants to make mediocre and even bad movies, because it debases the citizens, it dumbs us down, weakens our minds, brainwashes us into idiotic behaviors and beliefs. Movies are not art, they are programming. The world is not a meritocracy, you cannot earn elite status in a fair way. You will have to cheat and steal and lie and make deals with the devil and sell your soul to get the big jobs with the big money. And because of that... most movies are garbage created by hacks. Same with tv and everything else in all domains of media and art.
I held my breath when he said that Jordan Peele came out with the first comment on this movie. Ari and Jordan, please make a movie together. I bet it’ll be the greatest thriller blockbuster of all time.
Amanda Margareth yasss
Jack was excellent in the movie, but Florence was amazing and otherworldly! I really hope she gets an Oscar nomination at the very least! And it's a little strange hearing them speak in their native accents. They both did such perfect American accents, I had no clue they weren't Americans themselves.
Steven James DeBlasi I only knew Jack wasn’t American because of his role in sing street. Check that movie out. It’s amazing and Jack Reynor is arguably better in that movie
Agree!
Florence Pugh is a star.
I love her, throwback, retro name, Florence. Just lovely.
Saw the movie on 7/4 and both actors are using American accents in the film and you Can't Tell! Great performances by all. No nightmares yet, but I'm still brooding over this movie, and I probably will for a while.
Anybody else watch these to remind yourself it’s only a movie and that the actors are probably good buddies in real life?

is it scary?
I was not expecting Jack Reynor’s natural accent
Akshay Bhatia whoa for some reason I thought he was Australian before hearing his voice
Nor I. I thought that he was the only American in the cast. I heard an actor interviewed years ago wherein he said that Irish people are able to mimic American accents easily. I have to agree, excepting Dominick West, who does a very bad, inauthentic, American accent.
@@mablesyrup1571 Dominic West is an English actor
@@normanstrongbow9335 well, that explains it then!
@@mablesyrup1571 English actors actually do the best American accents (accents generally), as they are trained in theatre, and have proper accent/language training. Of course there will be some exceptions to that.

Ari Aster successfully confuses the audience in Midsommar. He forces us to sit in the Uncanny Valley throughout the entirety of the film. We as the audience must attempt to rationalize, process and stomach the events unfolding before our eyes, just as the characters were forced to. The movie was so gorgeously meta in that every character had a reaction I that saw being mimicked in person with the myself, and the people around me watching in the theater. This self awareness doesn't pull you from the world within the movie. It actually made the movie even more immersive. I felt as if I was a part of the world. It made the movie so relatable, and yet vastly unsettling. The fact that it was genuinely and effortlessly funny creates a truly 3-dimensional world, which forces you to see the characters (good and bad) within yourself. I am just so impressed by how confused the film made me. Just as confused as the characters are, just as confused as the setting of the film itself is, since it's set in a beautiful Swedish village, set in all daylight, and yet is filled with the juxtaposition of the dark emotions and events sitting just under the surface in all of these gorgeously shot scenes.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you to all of those involved in this film.
Happy Midsommar 🌻☠️🌻
As I told one of my friends.
Felt like an acid trip.
Whole disorientation especially after they get out there in Rural Sweden.

Midsommar is that kind of masterpiece that’s not gonna won any Oscar 🙃, I mean Florence Pugh is phenomenal, Cinematography is amazing, score is amazing, production design is amazing, costume design is amazing, script is strong, and I-

This film has been on my mind for 24 hours, can’t wait to see what Ari Aster comes up with next! Absolute genius.
I'm so glad to see Jack Reynor here, just being jovial and insightful. I seriously hated his character, to the point that I started out this interview side-eyeing Jack.
Florence Pugh absolutely killed it - we can all whole-heartedly agree with that. I just didn't realize how much Christian got under my skin until I saw how unlike Jack is from the character. Which just shows how good Jack was in this role.
lol "how personal is this film" is ari aster's least favorite question to be asked in interviews
Crushing hard on Florence Pugh. Movie looks great but yeah. Florence Pugh. Nuff said.
Terrified of bugs well that explains Poulter’s characters line about bugs when they arrive on the road before acid trip.
Just saw the movie yesterday and it was a disturbing masterpiece. Florence Pugh was incredible in this film, she needs to be nominated for an award!!! Ari Aster, Mike Flanagan and Jordan Peele are the best directors working in horror right now!!!
7:09 Hearing her talk about that reminded me of the moment in the beginning when she is grieving. That cut me deeper than anything else in the film. I still haven't gotten over it.
I didn’t think I could catch anxiety like the common fucking cold but I did. Midsommar is something else.

How amazing is that Ari aster struggles to explain things about the film and answers some questions yet he's so artistic and like what jack said that he's really a total astonishing film maker! That's what i figured from much modern horror film maker these days... Andy Muschietti talks like this too 👍
I love Ari’s precise diction. In my dialect, we’re sort of used to saying “cohn-nuity” with sort of a full sound, but no “t,” so I appreciate his preciseness. Something small I just noticed. ❤
I did become lost in this film and I watched it 3 times in a row. So many details to parse out. Brilliant performances to relish and admire. Seriously can't wait for this movie! Ari is one of the few artist with an actual VISION for his films. Many filmmakers today lack the shit out of that.
yeah he's a unique voice so far it seems, with unique storytelling, and that's what we all want. Why the fuck more original movies like his aren't made is anyone's guess. Nothing's worse than seeing something you've basically already seen before -- which is so often what we're fed by hollywood.

Exactly. Never seen a horror flick with a bright setting and palette.
I rented this for free at my public library yesterday. Man am I glad I went there.
Really wish I saw this in theaters. I am going to add this to my blu ray collection immediately.
Ari Aster is so visibly anxious in his interviews and there's something about knowing that the person behind the movies also suffers from anxiety that's so relatable and only makes me love the movies even more
When are you going to release this to the Philippines? T______T
the way the interviewer is pronouncing Midsommar is making me lose my mind.
If Ari's intention was to transport viewers to that world of Midsommar, he certainly achieved his goal. Watched the movie twice in a row this week and it keeps haunting me. I'm far from being a horror film fan, this movie is certainly something more. It was so beatiful and so disturbing at the same time. On a side note, I love how Florence greets the viewers in this interview by doing the "jazz hands". Think I saw that somewhere else, lol.
Phe-friggin-nomenal film! Holy jeebus, I loved it! Florence Pugh is not only stoopid gorgeous, but she's such a presence on the screen.
midsommar was amazing! definitely a must watch!
That was great when Jack hopped in to talk about the folk aspect and the cultural aspect of what we do/don't accept, then said it was masterful directing and congratulated Ari. I thought I'd never rewatch this movie, but now I'm craving it.
I'm trying to understand y there were certain scenes in the preview that was not in the movie
e s that’s what I’m sayin like the part where someone was levitating I was like wait that wasn’t in the film
e s It’s supposed to throw the viewer off and they also use deleted scenes
The levitation scene was deleted because he didnt want audiences to think that there was something supernatural going on with the group. Like the cult in Hereditary. He wanted the things going on here to be more real and that this is what a cult in real life would be.
I thought someone was just getting hung, knowing aster is a crazy muhhfker
Apparently the film was originally over 3 hours long; I think there’s going to be a director’s cut with at least 30 minutes added, so those scenes might be included.
Florence should win oscar with this movie... Her acting was so amazing in this movie. She was so intense...

Jack: umm, welllll...
This was an incredibly interesting, powerful, strikingly well-made and unique film. It's almost impossible to define or analyze using standard movie genre/type assumptions. It's a really weird yet strong, effective hybrid of tones and subject matter.
I can't believe I watched this movie without having heard anything about it beforehand. The only thing I knew was that it was the same director from Hereditary. That should have been the warning but I was not expecting what I watched.
LOL when Ari says "LOOK CLOSER"
Went into the movie ready to be fucked up like Hereditary did to me and I was not disappointed. After the ending credits my friend and I needed a second to decompress so we took a walk and discussed how brilliant this movie is. It wasn’t as horrifying as hereditary but it leaves the viewer with a sense of dread and uneasiness that immediately (for me) cements Ari Aster as a horror icon. I went in with high hopes (which were met with beautiful sound design, gorgeous visuals, unsettling sequences, well executed gore, brilliant acting, etc.) and tons of energy but after seeing the film I was both mentally and emotionally drained. Can’t wait to see what Ari does next.
Gotta see that director's cut!
