@Markstrosity He blocked 4 combinations of AK. Your comment shows that you don't actually know what blockers are, along with the fact that you have no clue what the difference is between long run and short run results
It's either a K or nothing I think. Right? All mid pairs are eliminated once he value bets river so it a 12% he has the king as a default. Dneggs got near 3 to 1 on his chips. He 3 bet 14% of the time opening his range to fit some bluffs. I think it's close. I'm not certain. I think you fold more often with some calls. That's a tuff tuff spot. Like Dneggs said about not being exploitable. I think the call is good because of the lose 3 bet. That's exploitable. I wonder if he would do that with QJ. Not a good move. Does he check AJ or bluff it. Matching AJ vs kq and AK and kj. I think that means he is lying 25% of the time and being honest the other 75%. It seems to be near even. He was getting slightly under 3 to 1 so it leans fold. Curious how you see it? Does my math make sense? Sometimes I think I'm missing something in the math. I love poker when we get deep like this.
I respect the call with the aq against the ak river bet (Reason I like it so much is the fact the he didnt wanna make the call but after deducing the facts he literally said I have to make the call thats top level poker)
Amazing series, really well-edited, instructive, and of course entertaining! I think my favorite moment was the tricky hand at 12:29 (J-8), where Daniel's initial impulse was to put in a blocking bet on the river, but then realized his opponent would never call that bet with a worse hand. But Daniel could call a bet, so he checked. But it's natural to put in an "emotional" bet in order to avoid a scary bluff situation. But as Daniel said, "Why would you want to stop a bluff? That's plus EV for you!" It was well-played and well-explained.
Daniel I don't even play poker (I quit a decade ago in college) but you're the only person I have my notifications set up for. Massive respect for these free lessons bro. Thank you!
If you’re trying to fill a void in your life, at least study something you’re going to be able to use the material you studied to execute in the real world.. otherwise you’re just wasting your time..
That very final hand with the K10 call was just beautiful and the confidence in blockers is astounding also, i find myself questioning this way too often.
I used to watch you way back when. Followed the small ball series and managed to do start doing pretty well. Always been a recreational micro player and doing this for fun but it's great improving as well, you know? Took a long time away from it all and tried playing the same way but poker has progressed since then. Things didn't really go that well with what I knew from before, so I thought: Should probably check out Daniel again. Seems like I'm having similar success with following your strats now as back then. Currently at second place in a knock out tournament with only 80 players left and have called or done plays I otherwise wouldn't have. Love that you're sharing what you know with people like me, makes poker so much more fun.
I love seeing Daniel cuss and show his personality. He seems like such a boy scout on TV tournaments. Thanks for sharing your thought process with us!!
I just gotta say I watched a lot of educational poker videos and this serie I learned a lot more than ever before. Filled a lot of blanks how to play certain spots that I had weaknesses on. Excellent stuff. Thank you.
The benefit of seeing these 8 mos afterwards is one can binge watch. Loving the online Daniel Potty-mouth Negreanu version - he's usually the consummate showman (understandably so). Another facet of the mystery and legend that is dnegs. Thanks Daniel!
Such good insight and talk about strategy. I’ve always tried to play so my opponent has no clue what I may have! Always mixing it up and being tight when smart.
Really nice video! I do enjoy the online tournaments a lot, but I also really look forward to when the vlogs and other content from the live events starts becoming more regular again post covid!
Sometimes calling with hands like that AQ just like you did could save you so much bluffs, what do I mean is "oh, look at this guy calling with AQ I don't wanna bluff against him". I think it was a nice move ^^
I’m new to poker and this sound like another language. I’m learning a lot but hating so many more questions! Can’t wait to watch this again in a few months
11:50 Wish we could see the 69BB to 55BB loss… guessing it was a few small pots and nothing major… but whatever. Great video again. I hope you have more of these. You are basically teaching for free.
With the Jack's he checked twice and bets half pot. This is a call all day long.. he wouldn't check the ace twice and he I think he checks the river with a queen. It's a risky value bet and betting that Q river will open you up to get exploited. Very well played Dneggs. My mind is blown. It's ticking and picking up valuable information.
I don't even have an interest is poker, but hearing the thought process involved here is fascinating. Does he literally have some dice or a RNG to make decisions based on probability thresholds for certain descions?
Interesting that Daniel decides to go down so slowly the shorter the stacks get from 2.5 to 2.0 - the multisize simulations I've seen recently show that even in 6max cash games the lowjack prefers a size of 2 and cutoff prefers 2.2. I guess this format is different?
I’m a poker noob, but I believe it’s because he holds an Ace in his hand, so that reduces the total number of combinations of AQ left in the deck. In other words all the Ace hearts + K aren’t possible because Daniel has the ace of hearts.
I have just watched these and they are very informative. Can someone help me out, @7:20 ish in the video with KT he raises 3.8BB From BB against an isolated limper sitting with 17BB. He says if he jams we have to fold as he's so strong, he also says he's always limp folding or limp jamming from there from a solver based strategy. If these things are the case why waste 1.8BB when min raise would achieve the same? Or did he mean against that raise size?
It would have been interesting to see if he would lay down AK to a check raise all-in on that AQ hand. High risk play obviously but he would be in the grinder because its probably exactly how you would play 1010 in some spots.
You could also block the j8 thinking that the stronger Jx in his range is not strong enough to check raise, but he may go for thicker value with his better Jx if you check, ie b40-b75, you could b25-30 block while getting value from his weaker hands and losing less from the stronger Jx, you are kinda protected too because it’s not like you don’t have trips and FH’s in your range. As everyone knows you can get very tricky with your monsters!
My favorite hand is the one you 4b bluff with AQo UTG vs BB 3b. Normally BB calls a lot and only 3b with a very top range. But I think high stake people are capable to 3b bluff more often on BB
While I appreciate Daniel encouraging us not to play scared, a blocker bet is usually called such because it “blocks” your opponent from laying a huge bet on you when you’re out of position. Even Daniel’s friends at MasterClass acknowledge this: “Making a small blocking bet though will usually be enough to dissuade them from raising unless they have a monster hand.” So maybe Daniel should rename his bet in this spot as it has a different desired outcome.
What is he using to show how aggressive people have been? The little window that pops up sometimes and shows how many times people attempt to steal, how many times they 3 bet, etc. Is it built into this site or is it external? I don't play much online poker but I love watching it and that makes watching this series extra interesting for me.
Why does Daniel call with the AQ against AK solely based on blockers. He only blocks 4 combinations out of 16AK combos. Okay, there is a king on the board, blocking another 4. But still there are 8 AK combos left. I don’t understand the call. There are still way more value betting hands than bluffing hands or semi bluffing hands. He wouldn’t have an overpair cuz he would have bet the flop or turn. Raising under the gun, his hand range is narrowed to AK,AQs, KQs, mid- lower pocket pairs. Daniel can only beat AJ. Which isn’t a hand to raise under the gun with. Am I missing something? Blockers aren’t everything.
4:00 shouldn't this board be better for your range than his? I feel like when he checks back the flop and the board pairs a 5 on the turn you should bet that
Bad call with AQ. I understand the logic, but there are still 6 AK and 6 KQ combos, and checking twice as the preflop 3better is such a clear AK/KQ line. He would have bet all pocket pairs for protection; all he could be bluffing with is some suited connectors. -EV call, also from an ICM perspective
Calling w AQ is probably a mistake, because if your opponent's range is for example 70% value and 30% bluff, you'd rather not block the bluffs instead of blocking value. I don't see much of bluff combos in opponent's range that don't contain A or Q. His bluffs are often QJ,AJ, random Axs. Thus you block more bluffs w AQ and you'd block less bluffs if you had for example 44 w 4 of spades and calling w 44 makes more sence.
I don’t understand why you called with Ace Queen at 5:40. I thought it made sense to either fold or make him go all in, I felt like calling was the worst option. I know you’re much better than me so could you explain what’s better about calling vs betting vs folding.
I would of called with the 87 but I think folding is right due to stack sizes and position. This is great content. I'm seeing that my game has so many holes. Position Position Position really changes your range drastically. Folding AQ early out of position with a deep stack. I like it.
