  • E1: 1917 RM Brooks Store General Store: This Was The first Video I made at the Store.
R.M. Brooks first opened his store in 1917, and it's still ran by his great granddaughter Tiffany. Brook’s is one of the last few stores left in existence where they still have a pot belly stove being used to heat with. Tiffany took over ownership in 2014 and has worked hard to keep the store looking as it did 100 years ago. Make sure not to miss this short documentary about one of the last few original country store still operating.

She sure was blessed to be able to have this kind of life. It's amazing how God helps people. I know her great grandparent's, her grandparent's, her parent's worked hard to keep this stores up. It's nice that her husband has helped her too. Like she said God has blessed her by putting the right people in her path. Not everybody gets those kinds of blessings.

The old Pepsi cooler takes me back. 60 years ago my mom and stepdad ran a service station that had an apartment attached to the back of it where we (including my two brothers and, eventually, my sister) would live. One of my daily "jobs" was to keep the Pepsi cooler filled. The payment was always the same - a free Pepsi. Oh, the memories...

So many items in this store remind me of my Great Grandparents store in Baton Rouge back in the 1920's. I was a young fella back in the 50's and loved everything in the store, especially the candy and cookies. Got caught many times with my hand in the Jack's Cookie Jars 😏. Construction of the Interstate took the old store and Hat shop. The Lord has Blessed this Family and business and Pray that it will be there for many years to come serving the area and sharing it's History. Really enjoyed the video, thank you!

My grandpa had a plumbing and heating shop in Alta Vista, IA. Tiny town. The building was around 90-100 years old when I was a kid. It had dusty wooden floors and one of those old school metal/wooden cash registers that rings when the drawer opens. I remember stealing all the quarters out of it and running to the bar next door to play pool. Sadly, the building burned down around 15 years ago and nothing was able to be salvaged. I’d give anything to have that cash register or be able walk through that shop again. I live 1500 miles away from that town now but i think because of those memories, I have such an appreciation for businesses like these and small towns in general. It’s exactly why I seldom use the interstate, love passing through an unfamiliar little town and stopping at the mom and pops.

Reminds me my Grandpa would been 17 in 1917 miss these old little store locally owned ran out by big box stores as kid . They couldn't compete on prices so run out of existence. Was dam shame these places are very rare now days . The small mom and pops general store you got best service they actually care about their customers became extended family . Remember when going fishing as a kid we would stop at a general store get supplies , fishing tackle and soda good times . Thinking back these folks were backbone of small community's all across America. My dad lived in rural Nebraska went to one room school all eight grades his grandmother was school teacher. Now days no service people just trying make a pay check don't care about anything else. Think it was sad that more little general store weren't saved . Remember the little general store with fond memories good people always friendly and great service . Humanity ten steps forward and twenty steps backwards ha ha ha for real. Thanks for you saving a slice of small town general store cool . God bless one and all be safe you all.

Why is it a shame? I live in RURAL ALABAMA and many foreigners have taken over the older C-Stores too, DO YOU KNOW WHY??? Because they still believe in something called THE AMERICAN DREAM! Something Americans have long since forgotten about. In many cases they've helped older folks retire, they've helped people in debt, they've reopened that abandoned eyesore gas station and made it viable again, they've taken failing stores and made them profitable, but more importantly they INVEST IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. They hire the single mother, they hire the teenager after school, they hire the plumber, carpenter, electrician, and HVAC guy to maintain the store. You're so wrapped up in someone else's nationality that you can't see the big picture because of your narrowmindedness. How can you take over something that was SOLD or RENTED to you? Good grief lady. I live in country bumpkin Alabama and I love my Saudi, Iranian, Korean, and HIspanic neighbors, I walk in their C-Store and it's like going to see a friend - no different than what happens in the video at RM Brooks. All the grandchildren of the "old families" left our town as soon as they graduated high school and never looked back. It has been the Foreigners who have brought my sleepy town back to life! It's not a shame, IT'S THE AMERICAN DREAM in action you're seeing! I myself am proud to see it!

There were little neighborhood stores everywhere 60 years ago. They're mostly gone now, so I go to a small, congenial Mexican store. I know where everything is; they know me and I know them. Occasionally I go to a big store, but only for a serious necessity and I buy enough for at least a year.

I was born raised and still live in se Tennessee. When I would stay at my grandparents in the mountains we would go to this country store. The metal drink box with ice keeping bottle cokes and nehi. They had a small meat counter and the owner would slice your balogna and whatever else. The family lived in three rooms in back attached to the store. Great memories! Thank you for sharing your life with us.

With your amazing stock of merchandise, what things are/do you search for? Things difficult to find which customers ask for? Deeply appreciate your basic menu , atmosphere and friendliness.

Well, my grandparents built one in Wisconsin. It was small. But it was a general store. My Gramps was an entrepreneur in business. Went to Chicago after gathering his orders. Purchased items just based upon the community needs. Farm country, but not without needs. Fabrics were an essential. All the women sewed. Some men as well. Everyone canned. But spices weren’t grown. Same with paper products from writing papers, pictured postcards and even the luxury of toilet paper. Well, my folks did build a grocery store too. But it included our living quarters too. My Grandparents ran it as my parents had other jobs. It was a small, independent, grocery store in a very poor neighborhood. They gave credit to their customers. Why? Because they knew that these folks would make good in repayment. Even if it was helping my Dad get a plowed path, so he could get to his job. Sadly, things aren’t like how I grew up.
