Supernatural seasons 1-5 were gold. Top tier television. It was scary , heartfelt, fun , dark and epic. It embraced this “ southern gothic “ style with its atmosphere and cinematography. After that … Oof 😥. Season 8 was a welcome return. But that’s really all I can give credit for after season 5. Season 6 was messy and totally ruins the end of 5 but is watchable . Season 7 is goofy and over the top but it is fun and doesn’t deserve the hate.

I just got to season 5 and it’s already starting to lose me. I think the made the scope too big. Lack of consequences is probably one of the two reasons I stopped watching Supernatural. I started watching it when it was a dark fantasy show that could actually scare you a bit and it was my favourite show and the show I grew up with, but watching it now is just painful. There's no point worrying about characters, even less important ones. But the second reason and the one which eventually prompted me to stop watching was the show creating bigger and badder evils after season 5. I mean, the biblical apocalypse was supposed to the the ultimate scariest moment of the show, no? But then they created leviathans out of nowhere, then there was God's sister, which was so ridiculous I just gave up.
Bloody Mary in season 1 was scarier than all of the antagonists after season 5.
And the show also leaned into comedy too much. Angels and demons were scary once. Now every child with a fork can kill them. Lucifer (especially Jared's version) was genuinely creepy. They turned him into a whiny child.
I will watch the ending on UA-cam, but I consider Swan Song the only one true Supernatural ending. Everything else is just making money for the sake of making money.

Great point. Early 5 seasons of Supernatural were filled with dread and hopelessness. You always felt like there's no happy ending, that these guys are facing against something way bigger than them. It really gave the show a unique edge that kept it great. After defeating Devil, I just couldn't care less anymore and worse writing was even more apparent.

You could also say it was Sam and Deans fault for involving her or Bobby's fault for introducing the boys to Pam....etc, etc. Where each of us draw the line of blame can get out of hand so it just depends on your perspective of being a victim or taking responsibility.

I think this show was strongest in the first 3 seasons when it was still grounded and focused on the two brothers hunting more “urban legend” type monsters. Reminds me, in Good God, Y’all (S5, ep 2) seconds before they ruthlessly hacked off Roger’s fingers, he said “you can’t kill War kiddos” which makes sense since the horsemen are concepts not beings. I just binge watched all the seasons after not watching it since season 6 and I really agree with your points. My main issue through the show was the lack of character development especially with Sam and Dean. Whenever they did experience some it would disappear a few episodes later. I even found myself disliking Dean in later seasons because of the inconsistencies with his character. Most of the time he was dismissive of other people and super angry but then for random one off "funny" episodes his personality would take a 360 where he would be cracking jokes, smiling lots etc. I found this really made it hard for myself to fully me immersed into what they were feeling through the show because they were no consistency. There's also the fact that they ruined some great characters (like crowley and cas) because they didn't know what to do with them so they gave them the most random or awful storylines.

Don't get me wrong it had a few decent Seasons after Kripke's tenure ended with the show. But it NEVER reached the levels of the first 5 Seasons. That could be because there were ZERO stakes in later Seasons. I absolutely loved and ADORED Supernatural. At one time, it was my favorite show. I really enjoyed the first 6 seasons. At the time, I was not a huge fan of S7, but look back on it w/more fondness than before though the Leviathan were not good enemies.
For me, the Carver seasons 8-10 (I guess . . I quit the show sometime in S10) drove away all my love for the show. I hated the contrived, forced conflict btw the brothers. I hated that Carver made the stupid decision of not letting Sam look for Dean after S7, made up a rule btw them for that exact situation, but then endlessly had characters punishing and berating Sam for keeping their promise! It was complete and utter nonsense. Bad Boys in S9 was retconned trash! Dean was in that group home, wanting a normal life but then a few years later, he's upset w/Sam for wanting the same and not understanding why Sam wanted that!?!!? That made no sense and turned Dean into a massive hypocrite. Don't even get me started on how this most recent young Winchester episode further messed up the boys' history. Plus, every Carver season had some inexplicable, contrived drama btw the boys! It was beyond annoying. At the time, I remember thinking, they were each way too old to be hanging together if they couldn't stand each other! Just go your separate ways already!
I didn't finish S10 and skipped all of S11. I heard Mary was brought back so I tuned in for S12. I came to HATE Mary. The BMOL were awful. And the rest of the seasons have been pretty much a blur. I have not been playing close attention. I often miss episodes and don't bother to try to re-watch them.
So, I think the show started to decline in S8. Sera Gamble's seasons (6 and 7) were a good continuation of the story, but things began to decline in S8 and it's been a steady decline since, IMO.

Sera Gambles Era was super underrated. It was able to establish additions to the lore without compromising the consistency of its presentation in the earlier seasons or retconning. Not to mention Demons and Angels still acted like Demons and Angel's instead of corporate lackeys. Crowley was also at his peak
Some of the character storylines (Cas's decent into villainy, Bobby's Death) were also much more engaging for me then what followed.

Agree quite a lot with you, for me, though, the greatest tragedy of this show is what they did to angels and demons, and how they nerfed them and made them into jokes.
Before, angels and demons were scary and intimidating, especially angels, they were fearsome and nobody wanted to mess with them, whenever a single angel stood in a room with various other characters, the entire room had to keep on gaurd and hope they don't piss off the angel, now, the angels fight like idiots, they always turn their backs on their enemies for some reason, everyone can kill them, they started giving them a bunch of stupid weaknesses, teenagers can kick their asses etc, it just started to lose its way.

For me, seasons 1 through 6 were peak Supernatural, with seasons 1 through 5 being pure greatness, season 6 was great, but it wasn't exactly on the same level as the previous 5 seasons, season 7 was quite bad on Cable TV, but I forced myself through it, season 8 was good, season 9, however? Made me quit, I gave up on Supernatural for years after that, and didn't watch any other season until a few episodes into season 13, I remember season 13 starting off really strong, actually, but midway through, it devolved right back to standard post-season 6 goofy Supernatural nonsense, season 14 was alright, I guess, didn't care too much for Dean+Micheal, but we got it, and well, saw a few episodes of season 15 only because it was gonna be its last season, but couldn't finish it.

God could've stayed in the back ground and been hands off and "good but mysterious ways" and Jack could've been a sort of savior figure that God allows to be born in order to try and redeem Lucifer and show why choice is important, why he doesn't interfere with free will, but nooooo, can't explore a benevolent yet mysterious God....

However I can agree with you in the middle and later seasons, as they're mostly just in as a source of drama and conflict. Plus adding god as an on screen character was an idiotic choice as his absence from the story was one of the most important parts of the plot itself.

Bare MAXIMUM (not minimum becuz we never go past this point), God should be an antihero/morally grey entity that still mostly aligns with the side of good. All the problems you mention are due to the fact they made it up as they went along... not a fixed ending like the wire or breaking bad where the story was pushed to a conclusion.
Supernatural was milked for every penny and at some point not even all these filler episodes where they chased the beast of the week, was enough to cover up the fact that there was nothing left to be told anymore.
Less truly is more ... I mean I remember when they introduced Castiel , he was a badd ass ( " I'm an angel of the lord") ... later he just got bitch slapped throughout every episode.
Cool characters like Cain were barely used and dismissed/killed off very quick ...instead of weaving him into a larger plotline that actually makes sense ... heck even regular demons were formidable foes at one point.
And don't get me started about these repetitive roundabout dialogues between sam and dean... luckily on these streaming platforms you can just skip that empty emo babble

The show lost everything it used to have, it was actually scary, funny, heaps of drama and risk for the characters. I stopped watching after season 6 and for me the show ended at season 5. Eric Kripke never intended it to go any further and it’s sad to see how shocking of a show it became. Not any different to any other show that outstayed its welcome, the walking dead, orange is the new black, game of thrones the list goes on. Such a good video essay even though (and maybe especially) since it was made before the finale. They really dug themselves into so many holes with the lack of consequences and lowering the stakes on a lot of big lore/worldbuilding aspects. Like you said: God killing Jack could be undone, God killing Billie only meant another Reaper would be made Death, etc. "Really cool concept that opens up a lot of questions" is the best summary of it. I also totally agree Season 11 would've been a great ending point. While there's a lot about S11 I don't like, I LOVE the ending of it. "Don't Call Me Shurley" is one of my favorite episodes and was such a good way to introduce/reintroduce God into the story. And the fact that it ended with God & Amara talking and making amends and not just killing the big bad...that was HUGE. Every season seems so focused on killing or shooting the problem, but it would have been so much more satisfying (and creative) for it to it ending peacefully and with no bloodshed. That's hard to do right and they would've been able to pull it off. Dean's goodbyes before going to his almost-death in the S11 finale was so much more emotional than his actual goodbye in the series finale.

A bit late with this comment since this came out nearly 2 years ago but I've recently gotten back into supernatural and I have some things to say after it's ending.
Firstly, I agree with every point made in this video especially regarding the consequences. Despite it's constant use I never found it unbearable, probably because I actually enjoyed/didn't mind seasons 4 -11, however seasons 12-15 took it to an extreme to a point in which by the finale season I was just annoyed.
"Oh no Jack lost his grace!" He got it back. "Jack's dead?!" He's alive again. "Dean's possessed by Michael?!" Everything is fine and we're barely into the season.
It got exhausting and I could barely take it seriously anymore. Season 15 as a whole felt like an entire Fuck You to everyone who actually gave a shit about the show and did take it seriously. I don't like season 12 but Crowley's death hurt like a bitch because of the fact he didn't come back, Castiel's death hurt a lot too but bringing him back so early felt a bit off to me, or the fact they brought him back at all. Don't get me wrong, I would've hated to see him gone but it would have actually had an impact on the audience and especially characters like Dean and Sam.
Expanding on this, I actually didn't mind season 13 as a whole, we got Cas back, I enjoyed how innocent and Cas-like Jack was and the first few episodes where we watched Dean grieve hit like a ton bricks. Saying this, the reunion between the brothers and Castiel was very underwhelming to me especially since Dean had been an absolute wreck partially because of his death. But from then on, every reunion or emotional moment seemed stagnant to me and so far from the heartbreaking performances we used to get not even a few seasons prior. Cas returns to the bunker with the brothers, meets his child who he hasn't even seen before because he was dead, hugs him and then they go on a normal hunting trip. OK???
Lastly, I just wanna talk about Castiel and the shows constant disrespect towards him as a character (something I would have loved to hear your take on however this did come out before the ending so who cares)
I only started watching supernatural in December of 2015, I vividly remember binging it all through new years with my family and it became a thing for me and my dad to watch. However, the reason I started watching it was because of Castiel specifically thanks to my friend talking about him a lot and me going on to watch clips of him on UA-cam. Obviously he ended up being my favorite (which remains true to this day.) So you can understand my disappointment of the way the show treated him towards it's ending. Yes I'm talking about 15x18.
To say the confession scene surprised people is an understatement, I had stopped watching the show mid season 15 because of how unwatchable it got but as soon as I heard about THAT scene I had to watch it. And it was bad. Don't get me wrong, Misha's performance was great and you can tell now that he was putting everything into this finale goodbye to Dean and to the audience, but the implications of it and the episodes after it were downright disrespectful. What I mean by implications is that, whether you're a destiel shipper or not, to have a 'male' character confess their love to another male character and then have him immediately die is comical, not only this but I couldn't help but feel the writers did this in order to try and finally silence fans who they've been making fun of behind the scenes for years, so they could have their cake and eat it too. Honestly, despite how hilarious the situation was (and still is to me) I wouldn't have cared...I would have been ok with it despite everything as long as they acknowledged it in the next episode and we got to see the characters deal with the loss of somebody close to them. EXCEPT THAT BARELY HAPPENED
There's barely any mention of Cas, barely any reaction from his close family and I guess you could say it's because they were still dealing with God and everyone disappearing, but after that's sorted he is still barely mentioned!! Deans reaction to Castiels death in the season 12 finale is leagues above season 15, and this time Cas doesn't even come back!!!
This might just sound like an angry destiel shipper getting pissed off I didn't get the end I specifically wanted but that's just not true, I just wanted Castiel to finally be treated with respect by the writers after constantly being dealt a bad hand, hell they didn't even give cas/misha a public send off after his death just to keep fans waiting to see if he would return in the last episodes.
I'm not even gonna go into the abysmal finale, probably because I haven't seen all of it but I just wanna briefly mention how utter garbage I think Sam and Dean's endings were. This could just be a nitpick but having a characters true ending, a character who has been hinted as suicidal more than once, be dying on a rusty nail baffles me. Not only that but Dean died the exact same way he would have if the events of the series had never happened, on a hunt. Sam died of old age after living a normal life, the same way he would off if he had never left college to go look for his dad with Dean. It's as thought all those years of character development were for nothing. I'm far from the only one who hates their endings, even Jensen has made it clear he doesn't like it but I still find it incredibly sad even a year later.
Anyway that's my rant over. All in all I still look at this show fondly but also with vague distaste after it's heartless finale

I'm surprised that so few reviewers ever talk about what happened to the Sam and Dean's character towards the end of the show, which is what made the last few seasons a chore for me to watch. Contrivances and nonsense can be fine if the rest is entertaining, but with these characters? Sam leading an army of hunters as some sort of background event? Dean and his strange vendetta against a newborn child? Hell, if his whole fallout with Castiel was to make any sense, it should have been about him pulling a gun and intending to murder Jack, but both Cas and Sam seem to turn a blind eye to all of that for some reason? Cas flipflopping between acting like some sort of father figure to Jack and complaining when he has to "babysit". And don't get me started on the brothers manipulating people to get what they want and murdering vamps and werewolves indiscriminately these days.
Nonsense is par for the course in Supernatural, but not liking the characters I used to love is what tips the scales for me.

I think the show just never settled on what it should be - personally I find the angel stuff so so boring and groan every time they come on the screen. The writers have no idea what to do with Castiel who just appears and disappears and changes personality on a whim. The show for me was much better when they actually hunted monsters and not with the angel stuff.

a feature length film Director ( not to toot the ol’ horn, but) Here’s what I would do to fix all this… Take things back to the basics and work with the strengths of the show.
I would make a feature length film that took place after the events of Season 5 as an epilogue. Seasons 1-5 have a specific time that defined the show. It was scary, it was dark , it was heartwarming and it had STEAKS.
There would be no “ End of the world or grand scale scenario”… You can’t outdo the final steaks of season 5, so you tell a personal story.
The movie would address a 20 year time gap of Dean living his life with his new family and legitimately being happy, but is repressing his inner darkness regarding Sam’s fate in Hell, meanwhile Sam being trapped in the spirit realm on earth with other nasty ghosts. He was pulled from Hell due to his heroic sacrifice. Both Sam and Dean can’t move on u til they accept their Fates.

Honestly they should've never introduced archangels and God and entities of such sort unless they had a Marvel budget or something like that. Such entities are supposed to be light-speed, have the power to lift planets with their hands, be durable to everything and so on, unless they had Marvel budget to create those super-powers into scenes it shouldn't have been introduced in Supernatural. The idea of an Archangel being as fast as human is a joke, they should've had like 6-7 seasons max and the bosses of each season or of the final ones should've been some creators of evil like Azazel was. For example if they didn't introduce Misha and all this angel and demon bullshit the finale of the show at season 5 could've been some final boss that creates all the monsters that were on earth at that point and defeating him would've meant no more ghosts, no more wendigoos, werewolf's and so on, the ending could've been the same (Dean dying like a warrior and Sam living a happy life) but it would've been more realistic, but no, instead they made an Archangel have the speed of a human, what a joke.

That's why most of the fights are bad and stuff. Should have just made it monsters and stuff. Like if you introduced angels obviously next is god. Where are you even supposed to go from that. Although i still take it for what it is.

I literally commented about this 9 days ago, but I'm changing my mind,
I just binge watched through all 3 end seasons of the show 13-15, and honestly wow. What a difference it has made, going back and watching the show a year or so after seeing the ending, first time around I hated it, worst ending to an even worse show in the end, it had become what I thought at the time a joke, something to laugh at and to become mind numbingly bored and frustrated with, but after going back and rewatching it with fresh eyes, the ending was honestly really good, the last three seasons had pretty much nothing wrong with them beyond minor annoyances, the detective work wasn't as lack luster as I thought in the end, they still showed the gore and overall it had the same DNA the show had back when it started, it didn't stagnate our ability to watch and enjoy it did, years of obsessing with the show for myself had ruined it, so it wouldn't matter what ending it had because I wouldn't enjoy it after binging it non stop for so long, in the end the show didn't get the fan appeal it deserved, I think it ended on a nice high note, they got everything they wanted, no more demons or monsters to fight, no more big bad, just Sam Dean, their mum and dad and Bobby and all of their other friends in heaven together for eternity, an eternal rest that they deserve after what, 8 in universe years of non stop battling and fighting and scraping by, this show was amazing, and the ending wasn't that bad at all, we all just got tired of the slight annoyances that built up season to season and cumulated into one big annoyance with the show.

I simply cannot see Chuck in Seasons 4, 5, 10 and 11 doing anything like he did in 14 and 15.
It's like the real God disappeared with Amara at the end of season 11 and a false one showed up in his place.
Though heaven before Jack fixed it was total crap and that was Chuck's design but still....it might have been a better story if the Chuck of seasons 14 and 15 HAD been an imposter....somehow

As far as I'm concerned, the series ends with Season 10, episode 3. The cliffhanger from season 9 is resolved, all ongoing plot threads are merely 'concerns' rather than crises (so we can easily imagine that they can be resolved now that the characters have time to breathe and think), and the afterlives have reached a new reasonably stable status quo for the first time since the season 5 apocalypse.

All seasons after 5 are bad. The characters other than dean become a back seat. Sam became a complete bitch and keep getting caught and being a Dansel in distress character. They seem to forget about Sam going to hell and being Lucifer, yet Dean gets the mark of Kane and it’s a bigger deal. I honestly think Sam should have been the one with the mark of Kane instead of Dean. Sam was the demon side of the Winchester family and Dean was the angle side of the family. Let’s just say I’ve bought every season within the first month of its release. I have yet to buy 15 and really have no desire to buy it. I only have watched seasons 6-14 once where I can watch seasons 1-5 over 15 times. This show is a prime example of fans wanting more is always not a good thing. They should have ended it after season 5 or at least take 4 years to write a more compelling story rather than make shit up on the go.

  • @jackfulham8210

I disagree with your point about season 4 and 5. It got rid of the threat of physically dying, yes, but in exchange they're threatened by things much worse than that; the seals, both sides of the war fucking with their heads, their families, and their lives, and saying yes to Michael/Lucifer.
Seasons 4 and 5 are all about Sam and Dean being small parts of the big picture. One of the most horrifying moments in the whole show for me was Sam telling Lucifer he'd sooner kill himself than say yes, and Lucifer just flippantly responding that he'd only bring him back to life. The idea of being unable to even kill yourself to escape what's happening because you'd just be brought back to life is much more terrifying than simply dying and being at peace.
This is solidified by just how much the angels fuck with their heads while treating them as little more than insects. The fact that they'll go to any extremes without a care because Sam and Dean are nothing to them. On the contrary, season 4 and especially season 5 had much higher stakes than seasons 1-3. It shows us again and again that they aren't superheroes who're just going to defeat the bad guys and save the day like they always do. There's a building sense of hopelessness as each of their attempts fail miserably and they pay the price for it. Hell, Dean gives up and tries to say yes to Michael. For me, that was when the show was at its best. I never felt like the characters had plot armour, or that the writers were cheaply extending the story like they did in later seasons.
The show promised us that the brothers wouldn't get out of it unscathed, and they didn't. Sam threw himself in the cage to be tortured by Lucifer and Michael for eternity, and that's where the show was supposed to end. It was final, and it's not Kripke's fault that they brought Supernatural back from the dead (ha) to make money.

I actually agree with almost all of this, which is really surprising cuz I feel like I don’t see a lot of people who I agree with?
I watched Supernatural for the first time last year and immediately after the first ep I knew I was going to like it but then I binged the entire thing within like 3 months. I’m still obsessed.
Season 1-5 are amazing, looking back at them. I got so mad with how slow it felt when I was first watching it (I’m not used to the ep by ep “monster of the week” format and that type of thing has never been my style) but I’m going through my first complete rewatch with a friend (we’re in season 4 rn) and I definitely did not give it enough credit back then because everything was built up and put together and foreshadowed so beautifully and it’s VERY well done.
Season 6-11, while they definitely have their weak spots I think I actually enjoyed them WAY more the first time around than seasons 1-5 (which I feel like is considered heresy in this fandom, but it’s true). Sam losing his soul and the mystery that came with it was SO interesting to me, then the wall in his head, and him getting his memories back, and then eventually almost dying because of how much his hallucinations tormented him? That might’ve been one of my favorite plot lines from the entire show and I loved every second of it (except how it was resolved, I can’t believe basically 2 seasons of consequences were fixed so quickly, and HOW it was solved was so so dumb. Cas literally said “I can’t fix it… except that I CAN” and then literally only took the hallucinations, but none of his memories?? How does that even work? How did that even fix it?? That’s just my opinion tho) and then also Dean coming back from Purgatory with Benny was amazing, and then the trials was also one of my favorite plot lines ever. (Can you tell I’m a Sam girl? 😭) I think the finale where the angels were cast out of heaven might be the coolest season finale to EVER exist. Not only that but the idea of Gadreel possessing Sam without his knowledge or consent and Dean gaslighting him into thinking nothing wrong literally makes my skin crawl every time, and I think that plot line gave us one of the most interesting debates on who was right and who was wrong that I’ve seen in years. In general, while those seasons had some pretty low lows, the good moments were AMAZING.
And then season 12-15… yeah. I think the video summed it up pretty well. I hate Mary with all my everything but I do think she played a very interesting role and I wasn’t against her coming back. I think it was the most extreme “never meet your hero” moment ever. But instead of ur hero it’s the person who you’ve been trying to avenge and who you’ve been fighting for and missing and loving and raging for ur ENTIRE life and then the illusion of this perfect mother is ripped apart right in front of ur face. I think that could’ve been SUCH an interesting idea if they’d done it right, but unfortunately I don’t think they did. And then Lucifer, I actually did like that they didn’t try to redeem him. After all the suffering and death he’s caused, I don’t think he deserved that opportunity. But the fight where he died was awful, and I hated every second. His character definitely overstayed its welcome, although Mark Pellegrino did an amazing job. The multiverse was very interesting and I think that might’ve been what brought me back and kept me hooked after all the bad tbh. Jack, while I hated the build up to his a character being born, I did end up liking. Only him as a person though, I don’t think any of the plot lines surrounding him really stuck with me or interested me at all. I loved the parallels we were able to have between Sam and Jack, Sam seeing himself in the kid and wanting to help his torturers son was such an insane twist I would’ve never guessed. And then the way that Dean just becomes a John 2.0 towards Jack was also very intriguing. But every plot centered around him (losing his soul, dying, trying to control his powers) all the rest of it didn’t interest me at all. And then lastly, Chuck as a villain, imo, was awful. Maybe it could’ve been done halfway okay but they did it so terribly. It contradicted so much that was previously established that it felt wrong and cheap. They used it as an excuse to cover up their mistakes and then the finale went against basically everything that the entire show stood for, everything they fought for, so what was the point of them killing Chuck to gain free will? Just so they could die the exact same way as they thought they would in season 1? I have a whole rant about the finale that I can’t even.
But yeah, I agree with almost everything and hearing the hopeful “maybe the end will be better” was honestly depressing cuz oh boy does it only get worse. 😭

I have a personal connection to this situation: I am a screenwriter/storyboard artist and in 2010 I lived in LA. I sent SUPERNATURAL show-runner Eric Kripke a Dean&Sam storyboard sequence I wrote & rendered. Mr. Kripke called me and we talked for 3 hours. He loved my work (and offered me work on his next series that failed) but explained he was retiring after the 5th season. When I asked about his 5-year plan, he explained that the crew had become his friends over the 7 years it took to get the 5 seasons in the can. CW wanted a flagship show, so they made him and offer he couldn't refuse- EVERYONE made out like bandits, and all Kripke had to do was make sure the show didn't go off the rails. (It did- but it took a decade.) Understand that a Grip that made $60K/year (not much in LA) made $120K/year EXTRA in profit participation & residuals- that is how lucrative the deal was for everyone. Because Kripke did not want to leave them all unemployed, so they got rich when he was done with it, because they all took over and did a decent job as stewards.
My point is also: if GAME OF THRONES show-runners, the idiots D&D had done the same thing, it would still be airing new episodes today, everyone would be unbelievably rich, and D&D would not be the laughingstock of Hollywood, and their STAR WARS trilogy of movies would have been made.
