My understanding is that David Whittaker (creator of the game) was trying to recreate a fragment of the melody of the obscure 1980 track "It Happened Then" by Electronic Ensemble (this soundtrack also features elements inspired by '99 Red Balloons' and 'Fade to Grey').
In the process he seems to have accidentally created the insanely catchy melody (in the Star Dust minigame) that was later copied by Zombie Nation for Kernkraft 400. It's all quite complex legally (lots of games in the '80s featured chiptune snippets that were uncredited ripoffs of copywritten songs) but I believe that the guy from Zombie Nation (who made a ton of money from his global techno smash) sent an undisclosed amount of cash to Whittaker, presumably with an NDA, which likely included a "Don't sue me in the future" clause. The Peter Baker who created the (weird) song that inspired Whittaker doesn't seem to have received a penny. You can watch his mad video on UA-cam though.
@@AutPen38You don't recieve money for inspiring somebody but David Whitaker did deserve credit for writing a sports anthem. I did hear 99 Red Balloons though lol.

I used to play this game! I always thought David Whittaker deserved an Emmy for this soundtrack.
I dunno why, but I keep coming back to this soundtrack. It just has this charm that later SID tunes tended to leave behind.

Since playing this as an 80's kid I've always thought this sound, plus the use of the third voice, could've done an excellent version of Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams

Yeah it was stolen from this game.
Clayton S it wasn’t exactly stolen as the creator of kernkraft and David Whittaker came into agreement to sample this song. David Whittaker later tried to claim the rights for the song and couldn’t prove he owned it, so zombie nation now owns the rights to it

It's played with a different rhythm in this game compared to the original to suit the 4/4 time, but it's literally the five notes from the Theme to 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (the 1977 Spielberg film with a John Williams score). Here the five notes are first played in the right order and then played backwards. Every part of this game's soundtrack was inspired by something else (includig several early '80s pop hits) so it's ironic that it's infamous for being copied by Zombie Nation.

This is a supercut of every track stitched together.
As the character walks around in the game, playing different minigames, the music changes without there being any pauses. There are videos of full playthroughs.
