As others have commented, the John Prine rabbit hole is deep and rich with musical treasures. I would add to others' song lists "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore." We sure do miss John!

another vote for "Hello In There" but you really cannot go wrong with John Prine. My husband went to the same high school, many years later. And John was his grandma's mailman until John was able to do music fulltime.

I LOVE John Prine! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Every song is good! John had throat cancer and his voice became a lot more gravelly. Listen to Dear Abby, Paradise (my favorite), In Spite of Ourselves and Hello In There. And Summer’s End has a video. So sad. And I Remember Everything and another favorite of mine, Grandpa Was a Carpenter, Illegal Smile, Please Don’t Bury Me is so funny!!

I’m so thankful that I got to see John one last time on his final tour. He encored with this song, then “Paradise”, then literally danced offstage. Dude knew how to take a bow. God rest him.

    1. Bob Dylan’s favorite John Prine song is Lake Marie. It’s incredible!
    2. Summer’s End
    3. Paradise-about a small town in KY along the Green River that was leveled for a TVA coal plant. Some of John Prine’s ashes were released on the Green River, just like he longs for in the song.

Love the reaction. I didn't think Amber's mouth would ever be able to close again, but she just started groovin' again when the chorus came around. You guys have seen two sides of John Prine and they are sometimes both in a single song. What a storyteller. Check out Hello In There. It still really gets to me. There is a video that someone made which really brings it home that is a slideshow with the lyrics. Angel From Montgomery and Dear Abby are two other favorites along with Sam Stone which you already did. Bonnie Raitt did a great cover of Angel From Montgomery and there is also a video of them playing a duet. Dear Abby is a funny one for when you need a laugh and a smile. Hope to see more John Prine here. You have just scratched the surface.

Back for another comment! After watching this video, I gotta point out a fact. There’s tons of older artists that still tour and kick ass. They’re doing what they’ve been known for, the old stuff that still rocks. John Prine did that also, but he put out new, relevant, amazing music until the day he died. There’s very few artists that can be said about. There’s never been a songwriter of his caliber IMO.

John is one of my favorite artists of all time. Blessed to have seen him several times live when I was in college and several times after I got married and introduced my wife to him and she became a huge fan. At some point listen to Paradise which is my personal favorite, but his catalog is enormous and most people don’t realize the impact he has had on artists across almost all music genres.

  • @donaldriddle230
    @donaldriddle230 7 місяців тому +1

Paradise is the best! But my first introduction to John Prine was a song called Grandpa Was a Carpenter!! He built house stores and banks. Chain Smoked Camel Cigarettes and hammered nails in planks. He was level on the level, shaved even every door, and voted for Eisenhower because Lincoln won the war. Its memorable because i was in South Korea in the Air Force Christmas of 84. My mom set up a cassette recorder and just let it run while the family celebrated Christmas together. At some point my Cousin Pat got out his Martin Guitar and played and sang Grandpa was a Carpenter. Funny, Grandpa on that side of the family was a Farmer. Grandpa on the other side of the family actually was a Carpenter. But she sent the tape to me so i could feel like i was at home instead of across the pacific. I never told her it made me even more lonely.

John Prine is a Chicago gem. He’s an amazing storyteller. I can’t name a favorite song because I keep discovering mor but I love Angel from Montgomery and Bruised Orange(chain of sorrow). This was a true story. John would shovel the church steps in a Chicago neighborhood and is remembering an alter boy who had been hit by a metra train. He remembered all of the mothers gathered around waiting to find out if the boy was their son.

I suggest Souvenirs, Jesus: The Missing Years, and Dear Abby as just a few. There’s so many. Let’s talk Dirty in Hawaiian and Please Don’t Bury Me are great also. John Prine was a true poet. His songs can touch your heart and bring tears to your eyes or make you smile, laugh, and toe tap like this one did. From his earlier songs like Hello In There or Donald and Lydia to his very last song I Remember Everything written shortly before we lost him to Covid, John left a treasure trove of uniquely American music. I saw him live in the mid-80s - best concert of my life. Please keep exploring John’s works…you will never regret it. 💖

I first saw John Prine over 50 years ago in a bar in Chicago. I’ve seen him perform many times since. Unfortunately we list him to COVID a couple years ago. Miss him.

I love the message of the song-to him, Heaven is what he already had here.

Job done today, giant smile on my face. My mum will be introducing herself to everyone one, my dad has a whiskey ready and is organising a bridge tournament

He released this album and won a Grammy for it just shortly before he died from Covid. It was ironic that this was his last album.

You guys add a smile to my face every day. Although I’m a 60 yr old white hit, I, too just discovered John Prine. Amazing

Prine had many friends and family in the studio when he recorded this song. On Kazoo's and yodeling is Brandi Carlile and Amanda Shires. The child's giggles were provided by his grandson.

Here's an example of me getting to have a first time reaction along with you. I've never even heard of the artist let alone the song. Thanks for sharing as I hit the like button.

I had the great honor to see him in concert twice I love every song I would recommend" the late John Garfield blues" next but any song of his is great maybe" in spite of ourselves" with Iris dement. One of the times I saw him was with her. What an honor John Prine.... Bow your head
