This is exactly what my dad did back in the 50's to mid 60's. The burn barrel was always there mounted just as you show in your video. In fact, I'd say most people in our community had at least one in those days. Today that lake house area is mostly millionaires and they probably don't allow them anymore. Loved your video, it brought back fond memories.
Oh thank goodness! I just got one, and was wondering if I should put holes in bottom. I already did the sides. And put it up on blocks. So holes on bottom. Got it! Thank you sir! 💚
Ours is situated on ground. Used T bars driven into the ground to elevate and made the bottom of the barrel with rebar. The holes in the rebar screen are large enough to allow the ash to fall through while allowing cans and such to remain in the barrel. Later remove the stuff that doesn't burn with a picker or shovel. No issues and we have had the same set up for years.
Keep the lids that often come with barrels , you can cover so rain can get inside! I put broken branches that fall during a wind storm, then burn when barrel gets full
I use the exact same barrel and one day my kid came over and put a pipe in one of the holes and put a little vacuum cleaner exhaust to it and this baby became a blast furnace. Burns FAST and hot. I made a wire screen over the top of mine with 1/4” squares for safety.
I bought a galvanized burn barrel lid on Amazon a couple years ago for $20. It's really helped make my burn barrel last. Also, I drilled holes in my last burn barrel, but it didn't work out for me. The pounding rains where I live let water in and rusted it out. They were only 3/8" too.
I usually fill them up to about 3/4 full then dispose of the whole thing at the free county clean up and get a new barrel, but that's just me. Barrels are $5-10 here
How do I start the flame when burning tree limbs? I am trying to burn twigs and branches but they wont light or burn when using lighter fluid. They have been broken, sitting outside for a year. They seem dry. Any suggestions for getting it started? Thanks
@@johndowe7003 Hey Thanks for the info. So... this was a while ago and omg I almost blew up! I decided to try Gasoline.... I did not have any Kerosene. I was lighting from the bottom of the barrel with a long stick lighter. Finally it went Boom and I wasnt suprised because that shit even happens when I light my grill... Anyway it did light but I guess the Gasoline create the fumes and gases which exploded. Does the Kerosene do that too? or is Kerosene harder to light but burns better? Thank you for the reply!
@@bmorestance kerosene burns about the same as diesel it's just more expensive and doesn't burn the quite the same as diesel . Just diesel like for a heavy truck, it's like 3$ a gallon here compared to 10$ for a few ounces of kerosene. just soak the cloth rag and put a lighter to it and it'll ignite slowly where it won't blow up on you. Gasoline and kerosene evaporate too fast so it doesn't have enough time to ignite. If you add some holes to your barrel it'll burn way cleaner as well. Just use a cold chisel and a big hammer to poke holes in it. Diesel soaked ragged works good for lighting up charcoal. Just make sure you got the diesel in the rag only, if you get it on the charcoal it'll carry the petrol flavor to the food. If you do it the right way the rag will burn away and leave the charcoal unadulterated.
Even better is to bury it or toss it in a swamp. That way there's a chance the carbon that the trees collected from the air and grew out of gets stored in the ground, just like coal, oil and natural gas.
Great video! I am a local Fire District member. Local ordinances forbid burning anything artificial/carcinogenic. Naturallly occuring substances, only. And, your local Fire Chief will have no sense of humor, putting her/his fire fighters in harms way because "you" choose to ignore local ordinances. And, got caught.
If you’d spread the ashes on garden couldn’t you use the sawdust for something? I’d love to have it to soak up oil spills in the garage but if nowhere to get rid of it, could use it for mulch or something, just a thought

Could I just vent the lid fairly well and use the kid during burning? Obviously not touching bare handed but would that also keep the random embers from floating out?
I used to use 00 buck from a 12 gauge or a few rounds from an SKS. A drill with a bit made for metal or a step bit are what most people use. I've seen a friend use a pick.

I have cut the tops and bottoms off a 50 gallons drums and set them on red bricks for my drums. excellent ventilation and no rust-out problems

Saw shavings are good for composting or to place around blueberry bushes. If gardeners live in your area they would probably take it off your hand. :)
Dude's last 3 wives vanished without a trace, so weird! 👋🤣👍
Good video man, simple to the point👍
If u have a fireplace or pit you can use sawdust paper and water to make fire briquettes or sawdust and candle wax to make fire starters
Great vid. Just built mine like yours. Thank you very much.
Thanks for this. I’m brand new to this and your video was helpful.
No fire demo? That was a let down.
Any tips for emptying a burn barrel of ashes and debris? Mine is about half way full trying to figire out a way to empty it

Wads of newspaper or pieces of cardboard. If that don't work, a little charcoal fluid.
Soak a old rag in diesel then light it. It'll burn long enough to ignite whatever you wanna burn

Somebody needs to patten a bottom that can sift the ashes. Heavy grade steel platform. Cut the bottom out of the drum and slip the drum over it.

How long does it cool down before you can empty it
He said that he lets the ashes cool for 1-2 days before emptying
How far apart do you drill holes and what diameter? Thanks. Enjoyed the video!
cant you see

I like it, it is simple.
May I please ask what size hole should I drill the holes?? 3/4” inch? 1” hole? Pretty please with sugar on top. Hugs
you dick cant you see they are 1ft holes
easiest way is to just cut the top and bottom off the barrel and raise off the ground with bricks.
I put a column in the center made of expanded metal up the center, it let lots of air in. Let it breath!
What do you use to start then fire ? Thanks
Ty for this awesome video.
what size drill bit ?
where do you dispose of the burnt ash after?
There generally are any much left after a hot burn but I’ll let it cool for a few days then add it to the garden or yard waste.

Show how to burn the saw dust in the barrel. I can't get it to burn on the ground with gas.
Ash is good to if cooled
What do you use to stop sparks from flying out?
use metal screen, hardware cloth
Water. Lots of water.

The ashes will block the holes.
Where do you get the barrel

Thank you very helpful tips
How about putting a grill in about 200 mm from the bottom for the ash to drop through?
I'm gonna need you to take your metric system and... Lol
214 mm is the ticket.

and how make barrel?
I don't understandwhy none of these burn barrel videos siggest using a firearm to punch the holes in the barrel. It aure is a lot more easy.
Some folks are scared of guns or can't shoot them in town. lol
👍
Can you use an A side 55 gallon drum that was used as polyurethane as a burn barrel?
How big are those holes?
cant you see
13 mm or 1/2"
Thanks
were do you find a metal barrel for burning?
At the rubbish dump....good to ask first,... they will be very helpful to get you a nice one :)

Facebook Marketplace. There's a ton on there. $10 each 55 gal steel drums
I got a few off craigslist for free, I use them to burn tree stumps from trees I’ve cut down.

if you are so smart then how come you can't spell?
Why dont you sell or give away the sawdust? Its great in the chicken coup
Rather just shoot the barrel to create holes that ways. Lol
