    Excellent tips. I tell my son exactly all this stuff - start doing your homework all the way back from the dugout. If you're batting 6th in the lineup, you should have a profile on the pitcher by that time.

    In order to be able to dance with the pitcher, what exactly are you watching, his entire body, his arm, and at what specific point do you decide to start your coil? What exactly are you cuing on?

    Great in depth analysis of getting ready with timing. So critical, also the approach to batting and being in hitter's counts as well is huge.

    Do you have a video on adjusting to the off speed pitch? I can tell you both my boys hitting improved greatly last year when they spent their time on deck getting their timing. I think it also had the added advantage that they went up to the plate more confident because while working on their timing they visualized themselves getting a hit as if it was a foregone conclusion.

    • @YoooItsRex
      @YoooItsRex 7 років тому

      Part of adjusting to the offspeed pitch is being able to recognize different grips and release points out of the pitcher's hand. Very difficult to do at a young age, but the best way to practice that is just exposing your kids to different pitches and speeds.

    When I played back in 7th and 8th grade (most recently), a lot of guys didn't throw that hard really. So what I would do is go to the cage and hit 80. It got easier the more I did it and it helped me a bit with timing. The only problem is I probably wasn't playing enough to adjust and wait back on those pitches from guys who didn't throw hard and off speed pitches from the guys who were more experienced and could control the ball instead of just throwing it. I also want to note that after doing this in the cages the velocity of even guys that throw "hard" at that level seems much slower. By the way this is a tip for more younger players cause I can almost guarantee if you throw an 80 mph fastball high in the zone when you are older it isn't going to end well.

    Timing is not something you can perfectly anticipate. It’s all about BEING READY, hands back, and simply trust your hands. As far as not swinging at 0-0 pitches, that’s often the best pitch you’ll get. LOL

    Funny you mention that bat donuts slow your swing down at 2:09. I've been telling people this for years and they look at me like I have horns coming out of my head. My kids always used their game bat to warm up without a donut.

    I feel like probably at least 70% of the time I swing at the first pitch. I find the best pitch to get in an at bat is on 0-0 because the pitcher usually assumes your timing isn’t adjusted yet so they throw it right over the plate.

    Weird.... I never swung at first pitch either in HS and rarely prior to 1st strike, either. And 3-1 was a “only a perfect pitch“ count.

      watch how big leaguers swing the bat, i.e. cano, miggy, trout etc.
      If you're a pitcher then i think you should really learn how to make sure your injuries have healed up completely before pitching again.

    I never played all throughout school, and my dumbass thought it would be fun to jump in a batting cage set to 65mph.
    First time? One decent hit. "Well THAT sucked!"
    After watching this though, I tried again and hit one really well, and 4 others were grounders while all but 3 were foul balls. "All right, maybe next time use a tee first to get fundamentals warmed up and THEN try like a 55 machine and work up to 65"
