  • On this week's Boyographic, we take a look at a game that I was first introduced to via a Multicart! It's Tail'Gator to us in the West and Shippo De Bun in it's native Japan. Time to take off my rose tinted classes and put on my critical eyes, it's reviewin' time!
    This is the 101st episode of Boyographic, the series looking to highlight the highs and lows of the Gameboy library, playing the hits and the misses so you don't have to! Thank you all for sticking with me so long and to everyone who's supported this channel. It really means a lot!
    All footage is used in fair use to give a cultural perspective of the character and context for this game's release. All footage is owned by it's respective copyright holders, and was not created by myself.

    If you are going to read the Japanese title, しっぽでブン, then you should probably learn to pronounce it correctly. 😉
    Shippo de Bun is spoken as "she-poe day boon".
    Edit: I just watched your Tobu Tobu Girl video and it is clear that you study Japanese. Hope your pronunciations have become more polished over the years! Keep at it! Also, love your channel!

      Yeah, at this point I don't think I'd actually started studying Japanese, I probably just read it off of the Wikipedia page haha! I'm still at N5 level, but I'm getting there!

    I picked this title up over Christmas. It was on a top list from UK's Retro Gamer Magazine. I'd been after it for sometime. Excellent play and whimsical music.Cheers Matthew!

    I've never heard of this nor have I ever seen it at a store. It looks like a fun one to pick up. Great video as always!

      If you just want to play it Kyle, check Multicarts! It turns up more than you'd think under various guises because of it being a good early GB game that's relatively small! Thanks for watching dude, hope you're doing well!

    In the U.S., piracy wasn't big for much of the country with regards to the GB in its heyday. Perhaps in bigger cities, but in many of the places in the U.S., it was almost all or all legal carts.
    Looks like Europe might have had a different story there. I say this because you made a hell of a wide ranging statement saying it was at the heart of most peoples' love.

    • @GameBoyle
      @GameBoyle  6 років тому

      That's very interesting! In Europe, Multicarts were huge! Most Game Boy lots I've picked up in the various countries I've lived in, all came with at least one. I've even got some boxed unlicensed Sachen games that were sold in the Danish equivalent of Walmart! Same with Asia it seems also. I guess NOA had a tighter crack down on piracy than their European counterparts!

      In Eastern Europe (where some of my relatives live) there were pretty much no property/copyright laws in place until the mid '90s more or less. In other words, pirated console knock-offs were literally advertized on TV, and games were dirt cheap - you could buy, say, about 100 NES carts for the equivalent of about 50 pounds. Until mid '90s it was literally a free-for-all, and nobody cared - interestingly, the same pertained to game censorship, of which there was absolutely none. Still, the downsides to that are that, to this day, Sony is largely the only console brand that is big there - it's much more of a PC territory, consoles were never nearly as important. Nintendo doesn't even have official base of operations in many of these countries, they just sell stuff through different business partners. So, Sony really won big there, as far as the console market goes they pretty much have no competition whatsoever, as Nintendo/Sega games were overpriced. Imagine going from games costing 2-3 pounds a piece for Famiclone carts to individual games costing 40-50 pounds for SNES/Genesis - no wonder the 16-bit generation passed them by pretty much completely. I wonder what the market must've been like in South America and all the other Asian countries besides Japan at that time!

    Great review, Matt! I must admit, I have never been able to find this one in the wild, so it has eluded me thus far. It does look charming, however, so I know I will at least appreciate it once I get a chance to play through it.

      Same here Matt, it was one of the last games I got actually thanks to a Facebook sales post (along with R-Type 2). I'd say I'd keep my eyes open but somehow I doubt I'd be lucky enough to find a EUR labeled one >.< Cheers for watching dude, let me know if you ever snag it!

    Omg this game looks adorable!!
    Speaking of bootlegs and those 250 in 1 cartridges, would you believe, that my first exposure to Sonic the Hedgehog, was via one of those bootlegged GameBoy games, in a black/white version of Sonic 2 for Game Gear xD yes, in an age where Nintendo and SEGA were at each others throats, I first experiences Sonic on a GameBoy xD

    • @GameBoyle
      @GameBoyle  6 років тому +1

      I love that kinda stuff man, that's why I started doing the 'Boy Curious' episodes! Sites like Handheld Underground are great resources if you want to find some of the ROMS to weird, Chinese 'unlicensed-licensed' games like that! Thanks for watching and the support as always :)
      P.s. the quality of the videos is probably not the best, but I did cover two of the sonic 'game boy' games in early Boy Curious episodes. Take a second to skim through them and let me know if either of them is the Sonic title you remember! If not, it's time for me to go hunting!

    Natsume did well with this and Amazing Penguin! Also, while I don't think this game is on the level of expensiveness as other games like Avenging Spirit and Mega Man 5, it's admittedly definitely not one of the most cheap games. Haha.

    • @GameBoyle
      @GameBoyle  6 років тому

      It's definitely up there with the likes of Kid Dracula when it comes to CIB titles though! I'd say it's on the third tier of high GB price, even loose!

    • @electricmastro
      @electricmastro 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I wasn't referring to complete in box. I just focused on the game and not the cardboard that comes with it. lol

    • @GameBoyle
      @GameBoyle  6 років тому

      Likewise man, though I will say the odd box is nice :) But even so, Tail Gator is starting to push the same silly BIN prices I saw Trip World at about two years ago...

    Looks delightful. I heard good things about this from an EscapeRouteBritish video - it just seems to be one of those games that people get pretty enthusiastic, and for good reason from the looks of it. I'm a pretty big fan of this sort of arcade puzzle platformers, so I've played it already, but I'm always happy to see it get more attention :)
    Wish Natsume would look into their damn back catalog and re-release/re-make/make sequels to so many other games in their classic library today instead of _just focusing_ on ruining Harvest Moon with an endless wave of cheap productions that don't make anyone happy. I mean, damn - they've got Tail Gator here, Shadow of the Ninja/Ninja Gaiden Shadow, Power Blade/Blazer, Shatterhand, Amazin' Penguin, Spanky's Quest, Pocky & Rocky/Kiki Kaikai, Lufia... like, what are they doing just sitting on all these? Ugh - they're so frustrating...

    • @GameBoyle
      @GameBoyle  6 років тому

      It's how it goes I'm afraid dude... I'd love to see a new Power Blade >.< That game is my Childhood haha! They did try with Pocky and Rocky at least, check out 'Legend of Sayuki/Heavenly Guardian', it was originally meant to be a sequel, but ended up having the character's changed due to legal reasons! Thanks for watching sir!

      Funny story Cyrus, that's how I ended up with my childhood copy of Revenge of the Gator haha! It was the only game with a crocodile on the cover, so my parents bought it! It's HAL Labs though, so it's all good ;) Thanks for watching!
