So glad you didn't skip this one. Yeah, there is a version of this song that radio stations play that cuts out about 45 seconds of it. Bah! Atlantic Records wanted to release the shortened version but Page nixed that idea. He once said in an interview, "I played it once, hated it and never listened to the short version again." That, and it's common to pick up different aspects of Zeppelin songs when listening for a 2nd, 3rd, etc. time. :) Enjoyed your reaction and looking forward to the next. Thanks!
It was probably 1970 or 71 when I first heard this song on the radio. It was an instant banger that I loved. In fact I went and bought the album because of this song (and I still have it). So glad you didn't skip it. Thanks!
Near the end you can hear the sound of Robert bleed through the track. Engineer Eddie Kramer tried everything in his power to get rid of it, but Jimmy said screw it, let's leave the mistake in. And it works brilliantly!
And all around the world, women fainted 😂 such a cool track! Back door man = side guy, its an old school blues term 😉 What a kick ass beginning to Led Zepp II 🎶💯
Hey Andy...so happy you went ahead and did the reaction to this song. I always thought this was a song helpful in understanding man brain!! Very masculine in every use of instruments by Led Zeppelin . Good reaction Andy! Good afternoon from Albuquerque New Mexico United States. Btw like your shirt!!! Lol
Andy, since there's a lot more going on than cymbals in that section, may I suggest how I refer to it? The *"psychedelic bridge".* And speaking of the song's psychedelic bridge, it is inexplicably 44 seconds shorter on the official Led Zeppelin YT channel's video for the song. Why some nitwit there would butcher it like that is baffling to me. Soooo many reactors use that link to react to, naturally assuming it's the full song because it's on the band's official channel, but it's not full by a long shot! Thank God you used the full album version, and not that horribly truncated official video. Anywho, having said that, this is my 3rd favorite Zep tune, and a Top 10 song of all-time. Incredible! ps~A *"backdoor man"* refers to a woman's lover who comes in and sneaks out the back door of her house when her man is gone to work or wherever. Not buggery, which I could tell is what you were thinking. lol Don't sweat it, it's an old school term not used much these days, and every young reactor thinks the same thing you did.
It's a musical representation of a "gasm" lol Plant finally copped to what we all knew way back. 1st TSRTS midnight movie we 7 went to in 79? ...all on 1-3 hits o' blotter called "Goofy"..clean sh*t, too. After just sitting there for 10 mins after it ended, hoping for more, one of our buddies goes, "man, I ain't no qu**r or nuthin', but that WLL made me horny"...then uproarious laughter ensued. The best made for the mind movie RBR movie ever...besides Floyd and the Beatles, which was like being immersed in a silly cartoon. Gey! The statute of limitations has expired! I ended up being an RX x 35 yrs lol
@@JoeandAngie Yes, that it's Robert nutting is obvious. As for the rest of your comment, I have no idea what you said. You sound like a Droogie from A Clockwork Orange. Lol
A lot of us in the UK were familiar with this song as a cover was used as the Top of the Pops theme tune for quite a long time. The cover was by Alexis Korner's band CCS.
I seem to remember, on the rare occasions Radio1 played this, they would cut out all the bowed middle section and end it before the 'backdoor' reference lol.
Andy rocks! Such a pleasant man. Your honesty is refreshing and I look fwd to your posts! Hey btw, ck out Tea For One from Presence. Jimmy said in an interview that it was his favorite lead omthat he put on vinyl. Thanks!!! Old 60-something Led Head😊 Edit...this song is the complete package and road map for the rock that followed. Intoxicating.
Jimmy starts the cool riff without the bass, then jpj jumps in and follows the guitar a bit for enhancement ( making Jimmy's guitar fuller) then its the symbols & bongos or tom toms. but most of the attention is to the theremin! And Robert. They are doing call and responce between theremin & voice. Jimmy using it in concert was jaw dropping. (You can see it on the "song remains the same video) if you're afraid to do live, there is a live msg 73 without the video footage. Most of us have seen it a million times.( get the version 13min I believe. We use to call it the sex interlude. We all knew precisely when the drums were comming back in with the cool guitar solo. Nothing like that had EVER been done before. No bow work on this track. At the end you can hear the voice echo of robert before he sings loudly "Way down inside woman you needed love"Before almost every word there is a soft same word heard. It was part of the tape bleeding through from a previous time of recording it, jimmys answer to this was don't get rid of the mistake , just use it. Now it's part of the coolness to the song. It's not in my top 10 lz songs, but maybe 20. Out of all the songs they covered, jimmy only released 16 singles. The deal he made with alantic gave them free artistic freedom. They did finally agree to let a tiny bit of the mid freak out go, but not all. ( Everyone who got the album when it was released wondered about that) They even got away with an album with no name. They didn't do anything but tour, and be heard live to get on top ( no Ed Sullivan) or many interviews, especially after rolling stone mag. Bashed their records !! You won't hear them say anything but praise now. They couldn't be controlled by anyone, and that worked in their favor !!! I don't believe a band could get away with that now. ZEPPELIN did create their own label "swan song" still staying with Atlantic records in a different way, on good terms. Bad Company signed with swan & a few others ( zep just wanted to help some bands to make it) queen wanted to sign with zeps new label, but peter grant didn't think he could handle managing any more then a handful, most of his attention went to zep. Thanks for reacting to this song even though you have heard it, you can pick up something new from their songs everytime. ✌️🕊
I grew up with this music so for me it can be dynamic but it's really just another song back in the day. They don't makes songs like this anymore, including the instruments behind it.
The middle section was cut for the single version but not completely removed. It's supposed to be a psychedelic/musical representation of sex culminating in Page's orgasmic guitar solo - caused a bit of outrage at the time. Can't wait for track 2 - one of my favourites
Cut down for radio, Jimmy experimenting with sound effects. The steel guitar in my time of Dying is beyond anything but amazing Robert gives a good performance on the Dvd you had ..Zep at their best ❤👍👌♠️
@@Andy_Tunereviews84 The songs are long if I remember rightly they did Dazed and confused and one version was 45mins long mostly Jimmy Paige on guitar even I have trouble listening to the same song for that long . And I love Zep lol .I didn't have time to say how I began to listen to them,I was born at the right time plus had two older brothers who listened to these bands and I had no choice in the matter tbh being the only girl who was outnumbered lol..
Check out Bonham Isolated drums/percussion tracks-awesome! Kiboko ch. Should always play the remastered versions-WLL is actually supposed to be almost 7 minutes long! This is the radio edit at 4 mins
They covered the same song as zep, and others that never made it big. It's an old blues song " howling wolf I believe, and muddy waters sang it". Not 100% sure on that sings part. Zep had a different rifle & other stuff to make it their own. Yeah, it was muddy waters that made a positive comment about zeps version. Howling wolf's estate sued zep & settled out of court. They did nothing to the small faces , and theirs was closer to the original.

This live from msg in 1973 is magnificent! Jimmy plays a Theramin in this! Back in the day we were mind blown!!
Thanks Julie. I can imagine👍✌️
Hi Julie! Fun theremin fact: you can also hear the theremin on the Beach Boys song, "Good Vibrations."

Wow. I didn't realise he used it so often. Thanks Katy👍
@@Andy_Tunereviews84 I think more so in the early days, nobody had seen anything like it back then.
It was actually a theramin, plus a lot of knob twiddling on the console.
