    Keep politics out of board games they said. Well, how about no. So many of my favourite games are deeply political, because games work exceedingly well at exploring conflict. And conflicts are by their nature political. Twilight struggle, paths of glory, bloc by bloc and votes for women. They all explore different conflicts in different ways. Oh, and Steph running for parliament is one reason you won't be seeing her on the channel any time soon. Will she be the first boardgame reviewer in parliament because that's really putting our board gaming into politics. Oh, and i suspect ill be playing some games with members of parliament at fundraisers and events over the coming year. It's gonna be a helluva time.

      Thanks for this review! I just placed an order for this at a friendly not-so-local game store. Looking forward to it! One question: in the solo mode, can two people play against the oppobot?

      Roughly 100% of the time, give or take a few, people complain about PoLiTiCs it's reactionaries upset that some minority group gets some time in the spotlight, or some social issue or historical event is discussed that the reactionaries don't want people to be aware of.
      Secret Hitler is excellent, too, btw.

    Great review, but I wanted to point out that the game doesn't have to be confrontational. You can play this game cooperatively against an Oppobot. The Oppobot is very easy to use (a card deck) and coop is the only way my husband and I have played the game. It is our current favorite cooperative game.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  Рік тому

      True. I feel the head to head is the strongest part of the game. But thats a good point. It's not the sort of game i would choose to play solo.

    A great addition to my CDG shelf, next to Labyrinth, 1960, 1989, Twilight Struggle,… and a great theme that deserves its own game indeed.

    Probably won't get it due to the lack of success with wargames in my current collection but I'd give it a try on TTS. I love war games about unique periods of history (Red Flag Over Paris and Fire and Stone: Siege of Vienna come to mind). One that explicitly does not involve actual warfare seems refreshing.

    You have some oversights in this: it has a co-op mode, and it supports 4 players.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  Рік тому +1

      Technically that is true. But no way i'd recommend it as a 4 player game. And the co-op is just using the solo mode differently. But fair enough.

      It might be. I prefer my solo games to be challenge modes more than playing against an AI opponent if that makes sense. Because no AI can really play like a human

    I'm a fan of 1960 and don't really understand why it's not that well thought of. On one hand, this game seems to really lean into copying a lot of aspects about that game... a bit much? Additionally, is it weird to be playing on the side of holding down women's suffrage? Seems a bit dicey. I mean, would you feel comfortable about a game that was set in the early 1800s US, with anti slavery and pro slavery sides? I don't think that game could get made. So... why can this?

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  Рік тому +2

      You mean how would i feel about "this guilty land?" from hollanspiele?, i thought it looked very well researched and truthful to its subject matter. I had a long discussion with its designer about the various ethical implications of the game and concluded it was robust. For me its almost never about the subject matter of a game, its about the truthful depiction of it. I don't like colonialism games for example because they are almost always one-sided, never give the colonized any agency, and act like a wargame where only one side is fighting, or even worse, acts as though no fight is happening at all. (I will however, not play games about say "prison rape" just on the theme alone)
      1960 is a CDG, it shares a lot with every other CDG like votes for women. And while it is similar superficially because they are both about the US and a vote, they're different enough in the actual play. Being a CDG though, there will be common systems, its like how every deck builder ultimately feels like dominion.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  Рік тому +1

      Oh, and there are a GAZILLION US Civil War games. Including family friendly ones. So i'd hardly say fighting for slavery is a taboo in board gaming. Battle Cry is very family friendly, and for the people is an excellent CDG

    • @timoseppa9124
      @timoseppa9124 Рік тому +1

      @@3MBG I guess I see you point, but the Civil War and Civil War games are about the war. I am saying if there was an in-your-face game about standing up for the rights of the slave holding South. Like, you can't play the other side in Freedom: The Underground Railroad. That's not "politics", that's appropriate.

    Not gonna lie, I only came here because of a post.
    Apparently Facebook banned ads about this game.
    Which tells me 2 things.
    This game isn't woke printed or to push some agenda.
    2 it has enough momentum to be caught. Which means this probably is a good game.
    2nd statement = Enough players to call it good.
    1st statement = filters NPC.
