I from America and grow under lights and I’ve got to change my whole setup bc I have a lot of orchids. I’m looking at the mars light setups. This was a great video by the way. Thanks as always
unfortunately, we can't only look at Lumens/LUX/candles when using a grow light, the PAR value needs to also be considered (full sun here in FL is ~1500 PAR). It is possible to have a light that has a low lumens value but a high PAR value (usually the blurple lights). Phalaenopsis and other "low light" orchids need a PAR of about 100, while a Cattleya might need 300-400. A PAR that is too high for a particular genus can cause the plant to suffer light burn, even if the lumens reads low. To put it another way, a standard 150 watt equivalent LED that you would use in a lamp in the home will never cause light burn, the PAR value is too low. A 150W equivalent grow light bulb might have a PAR of 350 at 18 inches and will burn a Phalaenopsis.
Hello Michael. You raise good points regarding par versus lux but ones that will have to be left to a later stage, if there is the interest in it. Trust you to keep me on my toes :D
I wish I found this video months ago. I bought a Mars hydro for my orchids because of the amazing spectrum but I had it too close to my vandas and burned the tips so I put it away and using multiple led bulbs until I got my led lux meter, which came yesterday. I was wondering if your spreadsheet of light ranges was published anywhere. I have my own I put together but I’d rather use someone who has had long term success with it. Also I’d love an update on how the Mars hydro is working out now that it’s been a few months.
Hello there and I'm glad you found the video useful. I compiled my table of light ranges myself, from different sources, so the only place it is published is in this video. The orchids are doing well under the growlight. I did adjust it upwards slightly once, near the beginning when I suspected some orchids were getting too much light.
The first cattleya to flower underneath the growlight is featured in this video and others will feature as and when in my bloom videos... ua-cam.com/video/Z_R05tQpZE8/v-deo.html
Oh how interesting. I'm in the states and I've never heard of foot candles and only lux (but I dont tend to think about light intensity ever). Could you talk about lux vs PAR? I read about it once before but am still not sure I fully understand it.
Can this light grow any vandas? I'm looking at it on their website right now and love the warm yellow color. Oh yeah uhm what's the closest I could attach it to the ceiling? I don't like lights hanging low.
I have not grown vandas under this light but you should be able to. Vanda light requirements are specified in the 'light table' in this video and are greater than those of my cattleyas. To grow vandas you would need to either have the light hanging lower than mine or have your vanda placed higher, so that your plant would be closer to the light than mine. The highest the light will hang, given the fixtures provided, is approx 24cm (9.5") from the ceiling. Hope this helps.
Hi👋 Thank you for the wonderfully informative videos. I am relatively new to orchids, but I seem to gravitate towards bulbophyllum species. They dont seem to make it onto many channels... Are they harder to grow or is there some other reason (like old genus classifications) that make informative video's hard to find? So far I have only seen them on Olivers Greenhouse. I would really like to start growing some, but have no clue where to start. Any suggestions?
Welcome to the channel. Personally I don't grow any Bilbo's. Many people dislike their fragrance and short flowering time. Take a look at William"s @My Green Pets channel in US. He certainly grows some and very successfully too.
Thank you! I don't really mind the smell as some of my Hoya's do the same 🥴 Of the orchids you own, would you be able to recommend a cool to intermediate growing orchid with small flowers? Sorry its a bit off topic, but I find the lower priced growlights dont really reach the intensity that some orchids require and I dont think my setup would reach anything above 3000 FC.
Hi Rachel. So happy Mars Hydro gifted to you the led grow light too. Your orchids will love that. 🙂
I hope so too!
Thank you Rachel for this information. Learned quite a bit. 😍
Glad it was helpful!

@@GardeningatDouentza Oh my gosh. thank you! I will be watching all your videos and recommending you to my orchid friends.

You raise an interesting point about lux versus par. Hopefully I will get to it on some video or other. Thanks for watching and have a great day.

@@GardeningatDouentza Definitely helps! Thank you so much for answering! Placing the vandas close to the light is no problem at all :)

Is it safe to have it where People can get eye contact with the light? Wont uv damage eyes ?
The light is very bright and you should not look directly at it. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines.
This was so informative & perfect timing for me. I have just been to lulu.com to purchase your eBook on growing Cattleyas!!! 💞
That is really super to hear. I hope you will love the book and thank you for your great support.
I don't mean to pry but did the purchase go okay? It never came up in my numbers.
Lovely lights. I'm thinking about getting some dimmable Migro Aray 240 lights from Ireland. Hope they work well in my grow tents.
Since I have to keep my Vanda's Alive indoors during the Winter.. It looks like I'll need 2 - TSL2000 end to end. @ $269 each that's an investment :(
Hmmm, vandas are big and the lights are not cheap. The things we do for our plants!
Wow..your plants are so expensive...maam...you spend money for it.
