Thank you for the video. I grow all my catts under T5 fluorescent lights. They do well. I probably will try some LEDs in the future. I think orchids do better under lights than in a greenhouse.
You know, this is about orchids, so I'll go off topic and tell you that I'm gonna grow a deep red Hippeastrum! Thanks to your video about its care I know what to do with it. :)
Lovely lovely, just absolutely lovely collection! I'm sure they will do great in that light! I was looking for the LC Coastal Sunrise for such a long time, I finally found one on ebay. I paid a terrible high amount for a very sad looking seedling... but (!!) it put out new roots and now a new growth. I'm over the moon! :)
Hello Rachel, your Cattleya have been suffering from drought in your greehouse this year and probably excess heat. Two or three waterings were needed during summer. Clay pots are also very permeable.
Hi Christian. I think a lot of orchids are suffering from this year's unseasonal weather. But I really think that more that two or three waterings were needed this summer 😂😂😂
Just back-tracked to the bleach treatment vid and the following update - boy that was a strong solution! The plants survived so, along with Ed, and you it's enough for me to add that to the list of things that work. Most of my Catt. types have a small number of scale around the base but sometimes in that area, it's difficult to tell if they are already dead (but I'm happy to 'kill them twice'). If I try the bleach thing, there's no way I'm unpotting them from the holey clay pots so would have to treat the lot - pots/media and all but that's probably good as those scale can get down under the rhizomes even down onto the roots in the pot. I'm pondering at the moment. I do now have some 'old-fashioned' treatment that I could use (obtained through a 'back-door' as it's an offence to even own it).
If that Schomburgkia really does it's thing, those spikes will be up to the ceiling - I remember at a show once where the Writhlington school display had two of these either side of an arch and the spikes were over 10 feet long.
Love this video and the new grow light. Like you say, it will help things grow upward, and not toward the windows, which is my problem. I wonder if the super-high light orchid - the rhyncholaelia - might be raised up (by setting it up on a stand) to make it more likely to flower?
Hi Rachel! Your grow light is very useful to grow orchids. But your orchids looks like a little bit dry. Can they flowering without any water and humidity in these circumstances? I know some Cattleya have rest time now and not required so much water and fertilizer in this season. Nice orchids. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Rachel, happy New year to you. How's everything growing under the lights? I'm so curious to see what happens! For the energy consumed, the light FC/lux and the area of coverage....it seems to be a good value. I can't wait to see the results! Happy growing, Kelly D.
My cattleya walkeriana looks very different. I will be doing a video on it as it is currently in bloom. Mine does flower from an immature PB that also roots. Summering outside in rather bright SW light helped. Usually after growing 2 PBs, it starts to work on the something that eventually produces buds and flowers in November-January for a full month.
Hi Rachel, thank you for a great informative video, I'm very interested in this because I live in an area that is very cold 6 months out of the year. I have several grow lights, and I'm fairly new at growing orchids under light, and it can be a confusing. At that distance have you been able to calculate the foot candle? I have about 60 orchids and half I grow under LEDs..have you considered getting another, to do a comparison?, the 2 types of LEDs I have are very different from one another. Please consider it, because I'm having a hell of a time, especially with the led with the veg and bloom settings...I'll watch anyway. Lol.
Hi Jon and sorry you are having such a bad time with the growlights. No, I haven't worked out foot candles and I won't be buying another one for an experiment. Thanks for watching and good luck!
I have two of those Rhino Orchids..and One blooms here in midwinter and the other midsummer outdoors in the SF bay area and let me tell you, winters here are 58f and 42f..not semitropical even. Hardy tough Orchids. How much wattage is the light? Do you think that the purplish tint is best ? The light comparison tests on YT always seem to favor the pure white lights although I myself always had best growth with a mix of purple gro and white lights. Especially that they look best with purple gro. Colors look very good. White might be best..but whats the point of a great flower if the light is so bland? Thanks for my rant-lol.
Hi there and thanks for your comment. The light has 100watts but only uses 50watts of energy. You can check out more information about it, in the link at the end to the previous video, where I talk about the light in more detail. Thanks for watching.
Just wondering do you give the plants extra calcium? Perhaps it may help a bit. I don't remember what you feed them. You have quite a collection. Extra light I am sure will help too. Take care.
Hi Beverly. Yes, Laelia perrini is probably suffering from calcium deficiency. I am currently using an all-purpose orchid fertiliser and notice an improvement since doing so.
Very enlightening! Thank you for sharing & happy growing.
Looks like the grow light is doing its job......thanks

Very glad to have been able to help 😁

Yes definitely need lights of some kind

I use this treatment regularly now. But with slightly less bleach that in that first video :D

Here's hoping!

Hi Zoltan. My orchids get watered once a week. They dry out between waterings, as orchids should.

I'm glad for your enthusiasm because I've made an update. You can expect it tomorrow or the next day.

That's all good information. Thank you.
Yes, this summer I water my cattleyas two to three times per week. Temperature go to 45 degrees some days in my greenhouse.

Thanks Mrs Rachel, there are just so many, and all are sooo very different

Are the picture frame's responding to your grow light at all?
Strangely, no 😂
Could you tell me if you have a video for the bleach solution you mentioned?

I'm not sure the R. digbyana is quite flowering size yet. I'm just looking at leaf size in comparison to my plant.
Ah
What is your grow light size and model?
Why don't you check out the video that I link to at the end where I talk about the growlight in more detail!
