I have to agree, there's something quite visceral about flying warbirds (especially in VR) that can't be matched by a GA aircraft. Plus there's no combat sim I know of that contains the entire world for you to roam around in...
Lovely video - as always! Let's face it - it's as close as many of us warbird nuts are likely to get to taxiing out a Spitfire on to Duxford's hallowed turf and doing a Ray Hanna...
In VR the Spitfire and the P-38 are by far my most flown planes. For something more modern it's the Harrier. I want to virtually fly these machines not kill stuff, plenty other games for that.

If you (Or anyone reading) is interested, the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum at Manston, has a Full sized Replica Lancaster cockpit that they've made into a simulator. It's only got a basic screen currently as they don't have a huge budget at a museum but it's the closest you can get to flying a Lancaster that's not the real thing currently. I had a go last year and loved it. They've also got a similar Spitfire simulator.
Being that I fly in DCS, I’ve never considered using anything military in MSFS. If someone is NOT involved with any other flight sim I would highly encourage them to try the warbirds. That are great to fly.
Absolutely the reason I won’t use them in msfs is the sheer lack of accuracy. Managing a Merlin engine or R2800 is only simulated in DCS. P47 etc are amazing.
I see Mick is doing an update for Duxford for 2024, and there's a fix for the 2020 version. I use it all the time as I live just down the road from the real thing.

While it can be very satisfying getting a fully laden 747 in the air, they never really feel like living, breathing things. It's a bit like comparing a Kia to an XK120 in terms of emotional investment and reward. It's probably why I like 80s-90s era motorcycles as well, you have to ride them and respect them, or they bite.

I like the challange of flying warbirds at first I thought can't shoot anyone or blow things up in the sim butttt the challange to fly around me local area is simply a blast. maybe a grp with warbirds can do an airshow perhaps for others.
@@mikecoffee100 I think the difficulty with airshows it is great flying them but not so good watching them in the sim perhaps. I think there os a virtual airshow once a year but I forget who organises it.

Just a shame this is still the only aircraft I have in the sim that breaks the aircraft if you open the cockpit. Really surprised that flying iron haven't fixed that bug yet. Guessing you have damage switched off. But its still one of my most favourite aircraft to fly in the sim.
@@paulsleighty yes the MSFS damage is dodgy when using 3rd part aircraft that have their own damage built in. For this reason I never have or need the in built one.
Great video mate. To practice taildraggers in MSFS, the GotFriends Wilga is also an EXCELLENT choice. Do you also enjoy the FlyingIron P38L? I am going through a bit of a Japan phase now, but flying the Lightning in Japan felt like blasphemy lol, because of how many Japanese airplanes the Lightning shot down!
I actually bought FS 2020 for warbirds etc. I thought the Asobo T6 was pretty good. I've flown one (FE511 of Hurricane Heritage) in real life and thought it came pretty close. It helps that there's a repaint available to make it look exactly like FE511. I haven't got the Tiger Moth yet but that's my next purchase as I have also flown one of those at Duxford. I've downloaded many UK airfields too including White Waltham and Duxford. I've been doing tours of the various aero museums that you can install in fs2020.
Warbirds are aviation, and MSFS is an aviation sim. From Duxford, it's no more unusual flying a Spitfire than taking off in a Cessna 172. :) By the way, the Land Warfare Hall is closing for demolition later this year. :(
I fly the Aeroplane Heaven Spitfire Mk 1. There is a fix for the rudder flipping to centre. Put both brakes on a spare Quadrant axis. As long as there is a touch of brakes, OFF RELEASED, the rudder works fine. IMHO, the Aerplane Heaven MkI is a better flyer than the FlyingIron Mk IX. Flight Replicas MkI flies OK, but they use the 'ASOBO P51 Reno' sound file. There is none of the lovely Merlin crackle at idle and low power. The FlyingIron I have has an Aileron Trim error, where it is trimmed Starboard at startup. The other nice Aeroplane for aerobatics is the IRIS Beechcraft Texan II. RAF training plane before the BAE Systems Hawk. I have the Navigraph Tablet moving map. As for Comms, there are the Yaesu handhelds. The ATC screen is on my right and I do click-to-tune, simulating pre-sets on the handheld. 7th September 2025, 'Battle of Britain' day at Duxford :-)

Why not. Most Spitfires flying now have been restored over the last 20 years or so and are a reminder to those brave people that through their actions have kept us alive today. But hang on, most simmers need an autopilot and a glass cockpit, so they arent for everyone, just pure aviators who appreciate the designs and their abilities.

The FlyingIron Spit has a simple autopilot on the EFB though. And I for one hate glass cockpits, haha. Spitfires are for those of us who love pure flying, with as few buttonpushes as possible.

Harold Rau of the USAAF 20th FG famously pointed out) - the fuel tank and pump management makes it feel more like a small airliner than a fighter. I guess that might explain some of its appeal to sim flyers who spend more time in GA or heavy iron. I'm always happy to come back to the extreme simplicity of the Spit (fuel on or off?) even if it's ill-tempered on the ground.
Right , I joined your Discord channel as well. perhaps someone can help me for the life of me I cant do a loop in the FW190 I have emerg power and full power and go up and as I pull up and nose over I black out and comming out of as I reduce power am over the place but manage to straighten myself but does look like rather embarrasing. before I can do an airshow need to work on me skills.
Warbirds are fantastic or I should say WW2 fighters are amazing. The engine management alone in an accurately simulated ww2 fighter is amazing. Likewise the ground handling is only accurate in DCS with none of the correct braking systems in use in MSFS. Tuppacks challenge of flying a real Spitfire or mosquito was the British brake system and it’s very different techniques required to use it. The dumbed down warbirds with basic ground handling and bullet proof engines needing almost no management to me make DCS the only option. In fact I rarely fly combat in them in DCS the challenges of getting a P-47 or Mosquito just into the air is a challenge. All the poor things about msfs come to the fore inaccurate taxiing and ground handling lack of engine management etc all make msfs a big no go for aircraft that require so much finesse and technique. If your missing all of the features of the real aircraft for me I see no point. I fly real aeroplanes and do not enjoy dumbed down versions when we have high fidelity models that accurately handle and need real world operating techniques. Not everyone needs that but that’s why we have DCS for those who want to experience reality in a multiplayer environment. BTW these aircraft where designed to be a weapon first no shooty shooty really makes them feel rather bland compared to firing a full salvo from a Mosquito. I recommend you try one of the DCS aircraft on a try before you buy it the free Mustang which comes with DCS for free. If you want a true warbird experience it’s very cheap ie free and considerably more challenging than what msfs provides. Enjoyed your video lovely Duxford scenery. Highly recommend taking the dCS Sputfire into the wW2 Normandy map and land at a forward airfield it’s about a thousand times more challenging than what msfs provides. Keep the good videos coming..

It is ‘why do people fly warbirds in MSFS?’ Also I made the point in the video that, certainly this Spit anyway, uses differential braking to steer on the ground and also has some engine management built in. The other advantage of MSFS is that you can fly as a modern restoration warbird anywhere in the world, which was another reason I was giving. There are a lot of MSFS aircraft I don’t fly because they are unrealistic, but if this FI Spit in MSFS is good enough for the RAF BBMF then it’s good enough for me 😀
It’s stupid. They’re planes, they fly, but their intended role is to be in a combat situation and utilized as such. Otherwise why not simply fly a C-172? This is just a money grab and why sims like IL-2 and DCS exist for these aircraft. In MSFS you’re relegated to running ferry flights or make believe air shows with military aircraft.

Their intended role was once to be combat aircraft but not any more. None of the real life WW2 warbirds are flown in combat now and are flown for the fun of flying, either for pilots or taking paying passengers to enjoy them. Why not replicate that in a sim? They are nothing like a C-172 to fly. I'd say have a go, there are some excellent free warbirds you can try without it costing you a thing. Don't knock it until you've tried it. 🙂
@@chrisgard4076 Copy the sound folder of the P-51D and paste to the same location of the Flyingiron, and then drag-and-drop the Layout.json file (of the Spit) onto the MSFSLayoutgenerator.exe file. (A new Layout.json file will then be created).

And to my opinion, Many aircraft except for a handfull, feel floaty and unrealistic. Especially msfs 2025. And about the senery, i always play in vr. Msfs on medium to low looks worse then DCS cause the performance is just not there. but eventually it is what you enjoy more. :)

The Flyingiron lineup is really nice. I fly the 109 daily and their aircraft seem to match the manuals and performance numbers.

All old warbirds are flown in real life with no pow pow. So doing it In the sim isn't actually non realistic.

None of the real life WW2 warbirds are flown in combat now and are flown for the fun of flying, either for pilots or taking paying passengers to enjoy them. Why not replicate that in a sim? They are nothing like a C-172 to fly. I'd say have a go, there are some excellent free warbirds you can try without it costing you a thing. Don't knock it until you've tried it. 🙂
i used to fly the Spit all the time but MSFS2024 BROKE the engine sounds an so far no fix BUMMER

I use the P-51D Asobo sound from FS20 on it in FS24, easy to fix.

@@chrisgard4076 Copy the sound folder of the P-51D and paste to the same location of the Flyingiron, and then drag-and-drop the Layout.json file (of the Spit) onto the MSFSLayoutgenerator.exe file. (A new Layout.json file will then be created).
Dcs and his warbirds has more realistic FM than Mfs2020 and 2024. Try to fly DCS P-51 and than compare it to stock P-51 from Mfs2024, meh.
@@rcpilot9963 i don’t fly the stock P-51 in MSFS as it isn’t great. This isn’t meant to be a comparison between why you should fly one or the other, it is simply why do people fly warbirds in MSFS. If the flyingiron Spit is good enough for the RAF BBMF to use then it’s good enough for me 👍🏻
Why not fly the spitfire in DCS? the flight model is a million times better in that sim.
@@tim-3705 yes not saying that isn’t an option, just answering the question about flying them in MSFS when there isn’t anything to shoot at. This isn’t a ‘you should do this instead of that’ kind of video.
No it is not that much better in DCS. I have both, and prefer the MSFS version. And the scenery is WAY better here.

@ oh not at all, I’ve just never really gotten into DCS ( there is one vid on the channel lol ) but I know it’s my loss. Just not really into combat sims.
@@Nor0252 I have both too, your preference is up to you. The flight model tho, is objectively more accurate in dcs. And to my opinion, Many aircraft except for a handfull, feel floaty and unrealistic. Especially msfs 2025. And about the senery, i always play in vr. Msfs on medium to low looks worse then DCS cause the performance is just not there. but eventually it is what you enjoy more. :)
