I think that’s right…as soon as parents are ok, I’m ok to wait and give students a chance because I know in my experience that some students might start practicing in the future and become real musicians, so I’m trying to give the a chance in life even though it’s hard sometimes to work in that mode

"A weekly music experience centered around the piano." Yes!!! I have toyed with this idea, but have not approached it in an organized manner. I used ideas from Power Boosters and the game library. I would LOVE to see this offering as a VMT curriculum. I think we could call this new approach The Tao of Piano Lessons.

I love those ideas. And I'm with you on not wanting to "fire" my students for not practicing. Wherever they are at in their musical interests, I'm happy to build up from there. But I also feel that I could do better at teaching their parents about practicing and that would probably help a ton! I'm just not sure how to get in touch with them when they don't stay for the lesson. The parents that do stay, definitely have the kids who practice at home better.

A useful reminder. Some will never practice but they do enjoy lessons so yes, just make the lesson a positive musical experience. Takes the pressure off both pupil and teacher.

I can’t agree more!❤️🙌🏼. Over the 20 plus years I have had teaching piano I have to say my studio has been skewed towards the musical experience over well developed piano skills. I’ve been told many times that I am a healer and I think it is truly what is going on here.

I like what you say. I have a couple of super sharp students who do not practice much and I can handle that because they do make progress because they are so smart. I have been firing the others, who seemingly after a year, are still on the same piece, can't remember from week to week etc. I just feel I am taking the parents money who cannot really afford this and are somewhat clueless about learning what is takes to play piano. Maybe I have fired 2 students. Lately, I have been having my parents watch your Practice Pie videos and I think it is helping. Those videos hit the nail on the head, are broken down into managable steps that most parents can understand and I believe it is giving parents insight as to what is involved in playing an instrument. I also include in my studio policy my requirements on practice so it is clear from the beginning.

Yes I agree. Make the lesson fun. If they are enjoying the lessons don't stop them.

I needed this SO MUCH! My struggle would be in getting the *parents* on board with a more project-based approach to lessons, and for them to acknowledge that this approach would be every bit as valid an approach than the "traditiona" approach. I mean, a teacher would need to be honest, and mention the "lack of practice," and sometimes parents will not enjoy hearing it. But if a teacher can explain to the parent that the lesson experience can be just as valid if approached as a weekly projhect sessions, then *I'm* all for it, as well. Parents do need to be informed - and on board - so that they can ensured that they're still "getting their money's worth."

I think there’s a lot of power in making it their choice. They can choose to support practice at home, or they can choose not to and instead have their child in this type of learning environment.

Excellent suggestions! I find note reading drills are particularly important for low-to-non practicing students so that sight reading gets progressively easier. We also enjoy color coding score studies as we learn new songs. I also break out the rhythm drum quite a bit to help them to work more on switching between left and right hand until that comes naturally, and they absolutely love black key improv duets.

Question: would you tell parents what you are doing instead? I've run into parents who are irritated that their kids are not progressing.... But they won't practice so that's on them. I try to explain this..... Buy it's not recieved well

Yes absolutely, I wouldn’t take this approach without discussing it with the parents.
