I don't see many people talking about this awesome show, (although to be fair it's newish) thank you so much for making a video on it! As someone of Mexican decent, it's so cool to have a show with Mesoamerican deities; they are pretty overlooked compared to other ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians etc. but I'm glad more people are learning about them!!!😊👌
I'm glad you liked the video! Season 1 has its flaws admittedly (probably mostly due to it being the first season with the uncertainty of not being renewed) but I'm 100% certain that if further seasons are greenlit, the show's whole potential can be used!! Looking forward to that And I totally agree, this is the first show I ever heard of that deals with mesoamerican culture, (there may be more, but nonetheless the fact that I don't know any of them speaks for itself). Obsessed. You know, my mothers great grandmother remembers her mother telling the Aztec stories. Telling her we were direct descendants. And if you look at my mother, you can see it. The stories are beautiful but violent often.
I think that Quetzalcoatl's plan is to free humans from the control of the gods, even if that means the end of all gods. After all, in the Myths he prohibited human sacrifices because he loved humans too much.
that's quite the beautiful idea! If that's true he seemingly accepts (or maybe even intended) that Izel and humanity despise him and the gods in order to make humans turn away from them
Also in Aztec Mythology, Tezcatlipoca is the god of Kingship among other things so it makes sense that Tezcatlipoca would seek him out, as the ruler that Tezcatlipoca visited was Nezahualcoyotl, the king of Texcoco one of the cities in the Mexica's Triple Alliance in which Tezcatlipoca is the patron god
Tezcatlipoca in actual mythology, honestly didn't have a problem with humans he was more of a mischief maker than anything. So Im interested how they're gonna take this
Honestly, it depends. Where my grandfather is from, Teskatlipoka (Tezcatlipoca) is Ajakatl-Ketsalkowatl's (Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl) brother. They fought a bit and eventually settled their differences to create humans (again). They're not enemies, just brothers who have different views on how to do things. So, I assume you mean the Mexicah version then?
Honestly that was a pretty good video, with interesting theories^^ (And you kind of nailed the prononciation of the gods names so good job on that x) ) In the last episode when Tezcatlipoca is making havoc inside a city, this city is Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire (and thats also there that Izel and his group are meant to go) and the man in the end with a manuscript in his hands is an Aztec Emperor, which makes me even more curious about whats going to happened, clearly him and Tezcatlipoca seems to know each others, or was expecting each others Anyway can't wait for a potential second season^^
thanks dude!! yeah I'm also super curious what that is about! the emperor is down for some shady business... won't be easy for the heroes to hold their grounds against the gods and their own people commanded by the emperor
Good breakdown! I agree with most of the points you made. The noble looking man in Tenochtitlan looks like Montezuma II, based on his headgear. If he is that probably means the story is based near the end of the Aztec empire? Also I want to hear your opinion whether you think Mictlantecuhtli is truly dead. He told his wife that he needed her for balance, do you think that balance will be lost if Mictecacihuatl is the sole ruler of the underworld? Zyanya also still has some of his power, so I wonder if he may be resurrected somehow involving her.
Admittedly, my knowledge of mesoamerican is not very profound, feel free to further explain the end of the aztec Empire and who exactly Montezuma II is! I've been wondering ever since episode 1 if the gods can die, since Mictlantecuhtli killed another... I feel like they do not really die, because they are seen switching bodies all the time so I guess the gods are rather intangible entities than physical personas. Still I can imagine that a god is effectively "dead" when he is not in possession of a long-term vessel anymore..these may be hard to find, at best they could take over the body of another god (or maybe Zyanya since she is already strengthened by the power she's got) At any rate I think there's a decisive detail regarding that topic! Mictecacihuatl consumed Mictlantecuhtli, in order to gain his power most likely. But maybe by doing so she can seal away his soul in her own body? if so would there be a risk of being taken over by him? I'm not sure about all of this but I feel an absolute death "just" by being killed in the traditional way is unlikely I do feel that the balance of the underworld is of importance! if it wasn't there would have been no point to getting installing Mictecacihuatl in her position. This could be connected to Nelli's revival what still is Izel's goal after all: If the underworld cannot be thoroughly governed, is there a guarantee that no souls and no bones can escape it to return to the mortal realm?
@@frogtoons Montezuma II was one of the last Aztec rulers, he was held hostage and eventually killed by conquistadors. I thought Mictecacihuatl consumed Mictlantecuhtli as a final act of revenge against her husband, maybe she had other motives though. In that end credits scene he was still alive but only barely, so I wonder if she was unable to finish the job and kill him off thoroughly. Is she able to harm him now because she absorbed his power? He could just be holding on by a thread because some of his power is still in Zyanya. He may also be able to use her as a vessel now that she is vulnerable and stuck in her lizard form. I think you’re right about the bones... in Aztec mythology, the bones of previous mortals are recycled to create the next race of mortals. During the creation myth of the 5th sun, Quetz stole the bones from Mictlantecuhtli to create modern mortals. As of yet I have no idea why Mictlantecuhtli is so protective of them but I’m sure it has something to do with balance. I sure hope we see what “balance” actually means in this scenario, and how the immortal beings and their souls work in season 2!
@@audreywolfer9706 @Audrey Wolfer that's great to know! I looked him up just now and it is said he introduced many political, social and economic reforms to his people. That’s a great observation about the role of the bones, if Tez finds out Mictlantecuhtli is dead or the bones aren’t being watched, that could be a very bad thing. I can totally see him using them to his advantage and creating an army, or something like that. I’m sure Mictecacihuatl will learn the hard way and find out how to keep them protected.

I think its important to note that the city they are going to, Tenochtitlan(Aztec capital), is the city that Izel fled from when he was young! Perhaps Izel is a child of Moctezuma or had to flee because of some important plan he had for Izel
nice observation! this tiny detail does open many opportunities to let the story become more complex..Who knows when Moctezuma and Tezcatlipoca first established contact?! They could indeed have planned something concerning Izel
lmao, I guess he didn't want his friends to be killed by Mictecacihuatl😂 and also to mess with the gods😂 basically he kind of found himself in a lose-lose situation concerning his personal benefit. It's an unpleasant situation for Quetzalcoatl indeed but we'll see what he's got up his sleeve!
I don't really remember the finale well but he was angry against the gods that kept manipulating, threatening and lying to him. His sister is, or at least he believes her to be, in the underworld so closing that door would mean giving up on saving her. And Mictlaccihualt was basically threatening to murder all of them if he closed the door. Plus Quetzalcoatl didn't really need him to close the last door hence the scene with the bird.
Because Izel had to defy the Gods. Close the lever and Quetzalcoatl wins, but leave the Gate open and Tezcatlipoca wins and Mictecaxihuatl stays alive. So now, Izel’s plan is to find a way to fight back against the Gods and maybe even find a way to use the obsidian to defeat them.
To add to what was said in the video, Quetz loves humanity and seems to want a certain equilibrium between the celestials and underworld gods and the humans. An equilibrium that is threatened by Mictlantecuhtli disregard of the concept of sacrifice (the dude is threatening cities like all you can eat buffet), the increasing conflicts between the different civilization that doesn't help with the blood drought and the way many gods perceive humans like cattle and play things to be discarde the second they become annoying. Might overthink this but usually in myths one of the major sources of conflicts between Quetz and Tez is humanity (at least the 5th batch that was directly made with Quetz blood) and their worth. I believe Quetz wants to establish a new order in opposition of the Tez's, not by getting rid of humanity v5.0 but by getting them to unite and rebel against the gods like Tez and Mictlantecuhtli. Izel is his chosen champion and even in his anger against the gods he is doing Quetz's will since "so far they're doing good". He's in many myths revered as humanity's patron after all. He's playing the gods with the bet and the closing of the doors since ep1. I think he will spend season 2 making alliances with like-minded gods, getting under Tez radar in his weakened state, maybe helping Izel and mankind champions in the shadows, doing some sketchy things with Mictlaccihualt... As for the priest guy Tez came to see to talk about the boy, maybe there's a prophecy involved ? Meso-american civilization are known for the importance they give to the notion of recording time and forseeing the future ( the 5th world predicted to end in hearthquakes for exemple) and since Tez is also god of time, memory and sorcery amongst other things, maybe he's visiting his seer for some premonition head start on Izel. Tez and Quetz are both sides of the same coin often in duality with each other so I'm more than excited to see what will happen in the possible season 2

This show is just ruining Aztec mythology. Most of the sacrifices where made not to “feed” the gods but as saying thank you to them for giving us everything to live. Tezcatlipoca gave his leg for the human lives and ancient mexicas belived that it was only right for us to thank him in that form. Most of the sacrificed people would volunteer for this.
good summary but these pronunciations are not as good, as long as you try i don’t mind though
thanks! and sorry...😅 I'm not familiar with the way they're supposed to sound at all and tried repeating what I heard in the show. If you have any tips on how to improve my pronunciation feel free to educate me!!
vm.tiktok.com/ZMeAG4noQ/ this tiktok basically explains the pronounciations
Trash shows, but the concept is a good idea
