    The reason you would like the rounding makes sense. It's been scientifically proven through studies Apple commissioned when designing their phones. The curvature of the human hand when reacting with smooth/rounded edges identifies it as something familiar and wants to crab it. It's also partly why barbell bars are round even though an angular edged bar would give you more grip.

    A helpful discussion might be to ask why a fine textured titanium non-integral Holt Haptic or Specter in M390, for example, is OK at $900 or more but this fine textured titanium integral in M390 isn't OK at $600. Or the Shirogorovs you mentioned at the same price. Or how about a crazy-priced Norseman? If the knife is otherwise excellent, and shortcomings vs. these others can't be identified (can they? I don't know), then it seems like it's more an issue of brand impression, which is an abstraction. This brand already caught some flak for selling some other steels and designs at prices that seemed out of whack with the competition, and I wonder if that bad press is bleeding over to this one. Because this one seems to be up there in very premium territory, yet others up there get a pass at this price or much higher, but this one doesn't. I don't know the answer and don't have a dog in this fight, but it's something to think about.

      No... The big difference here is that the knife in question is made in China. That's essentially the end of the discussion here. I've been carrying a BM Anthem purchased used for a couple of years now and still love it. It's over an ounce lighter for the same blade length, cheaper (until discontinued), similar blade steel (20CV) and completely ambidextrous (I'm a lefty) compared to this. Just replaced the clip with a BM deep-carry clip from the Contego and it's the perfect knife for me. I know BM gets knocks for QC but my blade centering and edges are perfect on both of mine. Regarding the pivot screws being different sizes, if it's one of those situations where you need to hold one screw while turning the screw on the other side then I can see why they would use two different size screws. If you have only 1 torx set then you most likely don't have two of every size. So having two different sized screws would allow you to take it apart with only 1 torx set. On the other hand, if it's the case where you don't need to hold one side while unscrewing the other then idk what the hell they were thinking lol.

      @thedog556 okay sorry you feel that way. Many would argue that saying "recommending crk is stupid" is stupid. 🤷‍♂️ I'd recommend almost anything over this, I've never seen any complaints from crk owners including myself.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  3 роки тому +4

      @thedog556 you are all over the place with your reasoning and examples. Buy what you want. No one is trying to stop you. But the fact is that Chris Reeve knives are absolutely legendary in terms of quality and design. The framelock was literally invented by Chris Reeve, so you have him to thank for every framelock in existence. Yours is the type of comment I would expect from someone who is very new to all this. I'm not trying to insult you at all, but I'm going to explain a few things, and give you some elements to consider:
      First off, the "base price" of a CRK is generally - SMALL $375 , LARGE $450. It only goes beyond that if you're buying something dressy. CRKs are manufactured in the US. This a major factor for many people, and it plays a huge role in pricing. They're largely considered to be an incredible value for a TRULY USA manufactured knife.
      Medfords are traditionally compared in the opposite fashion here. I.E. - "Why would you buy a Medford when you can buy a Chris Reeve?" is a MUCH more common comment. Medfords are fine, but generally not considered to be on the same level as a CRK when you're talking about a precision cutting tool. (CRKs are definitely designed better when it comes down to actually carrying and using it). Medfords also generally cost more for relatively similar materials. And in my opinion, they're not "up to par" in 2021.
      Shirogorovs are definitely not normally priced similarly to CRKs. That's a poor example. They're in a totally different caliber as well, which is appropriate considering their production models average $800-$900.
      Chaves? You mean the Ultramar and Liberation? Those are made by Reate in China. That's why they cost less. I love my 229 Ultramar, but it doesn't hold a candle to the cutting performance of Chris Reeve knives. It's also not easy to carry at all by contrast.
      Comparing to WE makes no sense at all. Again, CRKS are manufactured in the US. WE is China. The Slysz Bowie is the only relatively good example and it's sold out currently. Keep in mind though that the recent revival of the Slysz Bowie priced at $400 was one of the biggest knife world controversies of 2021. So while it's your best example, it's still not a great one. Most would still choose a CRK for the money, and that's a fact you can't argue around given the evidence of the Slysz Bowie backlash.
      So why buy a Chris Reeve? No one is asking that question because it's obvious. People already buy them. They know what their buying. CRK has a potent legacy and the knives will continue to be an integral part of knife community culture.
      Your value system is weird man. No judgement, but don't be surprised when your opinions are met with consitent confusion and criticism. Not very many people are going to agree with you.
      Again, buy what makes you happy, but don't tell anyone else they're "stupid" for making certain purchase decisions.

  • @JustKnifeThings
    @JustKnifeThings 3 роки тому +1

    I wonder if the T6 vs. T8 thing is a nod to people who only have one torx bit set. If you're using your T8 to unscrew it, but need another T8 on the other side to keep it from spinning, you need another bit or set. But if you can use your T6, even just holding it in your fingers, you don't have to buy anything else. It's otherwise a puzzler as you say, but this is the only reason I can think of that they might have done that.

    I totally agree MC. But that said, I REALLY want to hear what someone from James brand has to say about it. Are they happy with the number of sales? Do they regret pricing it so high? The overall opinion from basically the whole online knife community is that it's way overpriced. I can't deny it's a very nice knife and they did almost everything right (I'm not a fan of the thumbstud at all) but that price almost had to guarantee the sales are no where near as high as other brands selling similar knives. I thank they might have been smart with the pivot hardware, if it isn't d-shaped then the t6 on one side and then on the other makes sense, gives you the opportunity to disassemble it with one single bit set, not two like other knives with free spinning pivots and t8s on both sides

    T6 on show side and T8 on the back side of the pivot makes the most sense. This way, most people who probably have one set of drivers (most of James brand target market) can open it with the one set of drivers; and at the same time, the show side is less industrial looking with a T6.

    I find the price of this insane compared to just about anything except the large sebenza (which I think one could argue this is a similar knife but as an integral with better materials), which then makes me question if that knife is just overpriced too. the only way I can get the t6 and t8 combination to make sense is that most torx kits come with only 1 of each, and if the pivot isn't locked in place, you'll need to brace one screw and turn the other. So having 2 different sizes means each torx set will have enough bits to open the pivot up. But yeah +1 for T10...or be like Medford and do T30 ahahahaha

And they are all sold out anyway. It‘s insane. And I say that as someone who actually likes The James Brand and owns a bunch of their knives.

  • @craigjomaia
    @craigjomaia 2 роки тому

    Totally agree on the ridiculous overpricing. Couple of things noticed randomly. The logo is, I believe, a geometric representation of an arrowhead, as shown on the two sides of the coin. A 'minimalist' view of one, if you will. As to the mismatched torx on the pivot, going with their minimalist philosophy, while most of us have multiple torx sets, if you only have one you still have a T6 and a T8 to use on both sides of the pivot while many people may not have two T8s. Total assumptions on my part though.

    So I have to ask. You say in EVERY integral video that you love them "partly" because they're just so easy to take apart and such. Have you ever taken one or 2 apart? Because I've had probably around 20 or more integrals and I've taken them all apart more than once. Integrals are absolutely positively more difficult to take apart and put back together. And yes, the extra cut out around the pivot is for the bearings and such. It'd be impossible to get that stuff in without the cut out. I just had to ask. I have yet to take apart 1 integral that's easy to put back together. They're ALWAYS difficult, and that's because it has to be perfect or it won't work. Thanks for the content.
    God bless
