"Their prices are just kind of like that."
A polite way of putting it.
I’ve been eyeing this knife for a bit based on aesthetics. I appreciate the honesty because at that price I would expect better fit, finish, and quality control. Too bad because that olive micarta and satin blade look dapper as hell.
Better knives available for less money. Should be the tag line for all of James Brand’s EDC stuff. They’re generally nice stuff, just 1.5-2.5x more expensive then comparable items.
This was a great review. Super truthful about the steel and missing screw issue. Keep doing you my man
I like the design a lot, but the QC concerns and knife steel make it tough to buy at its current price.
Needs to have at least CPM-154 steel for 150 dollars.
Ashlyn Goldberg or s30v
Exactly I mean maybe something like bd1n,vg10, s30v or I would prefer 154cm like you said but damn man come on.. I could literally get a knife with better steel, ceramic ball bearing and perfect fit and finish from some lower end companies like civivi for ALOT less. This knife has to really come down on price to be appealing to real knife enthusiasts in my opinion!
Yup. And not made in China
Good call on the sound, and that it connotes 'mushy' - I'd played around with w/ tuning the acoustical signaturse of a few flip knives a while ago & found that deadening the sound of the blade locking or stopping , which is the dominant action noise, had exactly that affect - even perceived the action as slower. Got the best results from isolating the action stage sounds by removing chatter and then sharpening those by debouncing and improving consistency and mechanical efficiency
Glad you dug the knife! Now I'm going to have to take the pocket clip off of one and see how I like it😁.-Zac
Blade HQ Ehrenmann
I like what you said about the sound. I get it. great video, man!
I love the look of this knife, but for the money, I’d rather go for the Bugout.
The dugout is terrible.
@@krkabob Sounds like wallet envy.
The bugout is lighter, better steel, better backed warranty,... Not even a contest.
But hey keep using your Walmart Ozark.
@@TheGamerGuy1981 Nah the This has better material handle
@@itreturnscribbles5660 rofl... OK. The grivory is flexible and doesn't really Break, but you can get a bugout in CF or other materials of choice.

I like the grind and shape, too expensive relative to the competition though
Today I looked at a Carter at a fancy store in an artist's community along the beach south of here. The town is always full of rich tourists. One of the things I've noticed about the James Brand knives is that they are often sold in kinda swanky hipster stores along with expensive clothes, stylish bags and packs, fancy bikes, motorcycles, other fancy expensive little gadgets, and with a coffee and pastry department somewhere in the store. Almost always, the clerks are hip types that dress like the latest outdoor adventurers, but there's not a speck of dirt on their shoes or under their nails. In fact, they usually don't know beans about knives, except maybe ones used to slice up kale or something like that. At any rate, twice now I've found that they misidentified the knives they were selling and gave the prices as way under what they are supposed to be sold for. I won't say if I took advantage of their lack of knowledge in this area. At any rate, that Carter is one fine knife on many levels. One of the James brand knives I looked at, one with stainless scales, had horrible blade play, however.
Great review, honest and showed both good and bad. James brand seems to be all show and no go.
Great vid as usual
When I first saw this knife I thought I was already buying it. I'd be willing to buy a knife with VG-10 for the sleek design. What I am not willing to do is pay almost as much as an Ace Biblio with M390 steel for a VG-10 junker. Their asking price is an abomination to the knife company, especially with brands like Civivi making such compelling AND affordable designs. I honestly hope James doesn't get away with this highway robbery off marketing.
i didnt even like my biblio lol, 170$ for yes great materials but one of the worst actions on a 100+ $knife
...youre joking right? mfs will pay $200 plus for D2 and plastic scales and no one says a word other than the occasional "reeeeee D2" but this is a bridge too far? stfu lmao
This is probably a decent product, but after many years of carrying various folders, I recently made the switch to a small fixed blade for EDC. It has a lot of advantages that I somehow overlooked all this time: no ergo compromises, no hotspots, no blade play, easier to clean, less maintenance, faster to deploy, less chance of failure, doesn’t take up pocket space, can’t fall out of pocket, weak hand draw is practical in many cases. The key was to find the right holster setup, which for me is cross draw horizontal belt carry. I’ll probably only go back to folders on the rare occasions when I need to comply with a more formal dress code.
wow, that's a nice Buck Vantage!
Nice video. Would be interested to see more of The James Brand knives reviewed.
I like it. Great vid.
Just received mine today so excited about this video Green thumb disk green
Frustrating that if they'd skeletonised that clip, they probably could have maintained the ambi clip but avoided the empty hole when using the lanyard 🤷🏻♂️ but at that money, I'm another one that would just go Bugout instead. It's a pretty knife, but a couple of design errors and too much money for VG-10 - which also has me eyeballing the fancy packaging like "did I just pay an extra $10+ for the bit I threw in the trash?"
I had the same feeling when I removed my clip on my spyderco manix 2 lol couldn't close the knife.
The James Brand are what MVMT is to the watch community.
Yikes that’s a hard take
Couldn't agree more.
Perfect analogy. Knives for people that don't know anything about knives.
Pretty much. Getting into watches I got an MVMT as my first, haven’t worn it in a while because as my appreciation for watches grew so did my knowledge. Let’s call the price of MVMT and James Brand an “entry tax”. If you don’t know any better about the two industries you may spend the money on those. I don’t hate the brands for it, the real crime is that people buy without knowing.
I can't say I fully agree (I detest DWs and MVMT tho hehe). I've been buying and using knives since 2012 and I picked up the Carter late December 2019. The fit and finish on mine is flawless, the FFG and blade shape cut very well too. I'd say if falls in between a mini-grip and a 940, easier to carry than a Para 3. Surprisingly good, picked up the Folsom too. Yeah, the James Brand tax is higher than the Butterfly tax😅
I dig almost everything about that knife. The micarta looks great. VG10 is a no go though. I have had VG10 before and it is an adequate steel, it just didnt hold an edge long for my usage. If it was in s35vn or better at that price it might be a contender for me.
Jus found this channel n i love the damn thing
You should do a law enforcement on duty/ off duty best of
Love your videos, just started watching not too long ago. Keep up the good work. Nice knife. What is the name of that driver that you used and where do I get one?
Magnificent knife. Where did you find the lead with the little skull on the strap ?
Excellent knife👍🏼😀
thanks for the review, what's the torx size used to undo the screw?
James Brand is full of it. Nice looking designs though.
I like the look of your screw driver the best in this video!
I like how this looks but I feel like the lightweight chaparral at 90 bucks is more compelling.
A company who markets an attention to detail, selling off-center knives? Seems kinda hypocritical. Neat look, either way.
Honest review - 👍👍
Hey bud, where did you get the torx driver handle that you used in this video?
I bought the Carter XL and thought I'm paying way too much, $169, but oh man, it is the smoothest knife opening, closing and the full action. I thought I'd carry it in more professional settings, not jeans, and that holds true, but if I'm being honest, I go to my EDC tray every night and flick that disk and axis lock 10 times. Like butter! Super click, absolutely. I love me some snap on opening, but this is a soothing action. Too much money?, perhaps, but so far it's silky, sonic smooth every night baby
Probably improved production runs since the first ones came out. It's a sexy knife and if you know your way around a knife sharpener, the edge retention is not a show stopper.
I agree on the brands prices. It’s a shame there priced so high. Hopefully with success they can grow and become more competitive .
Great looks to the knife, and at $159 it honestly should have at a minimum S30v steel. But the $159 knife comes with steel that I also find on my $29 Spyderco Manbug (VG10). So keep the block box, the sack and just give us a good value in the knife. BTW, Blade HQ is getting pummeled on IG right now regarding this. This is a $79-89 knife with the centering issues like you had, and the VG10
Pretty sweet looking knife! Where did you get the screw driver you used to take off the pocket clip? I’m looking for a good one. Keep up the good work!
Combat Beads makes them
Hi Taylor..…..where did you get the bugout scales?
What was that dope looking tool you were using?
Look at the Viper Novis in green micarta. Has the "ZEN" of this knife but with build quality to match.. cheaper too
Pretty expensive but I do like the looks
What screw bit did you use to remove the clip? I don't have anything smaller than T10, trying to order more bits.
150 for a vg10 griptillian, think I'll pass.
Great PetesPirateLife bead Taylor! Looks really cool 😎
Why would you have to give up pocket clip to use lanyard??
She's a handsome knife. There is a lot of strong competition at the $150 mark. I was looking at a Hogue with 20CV for the same price. I would give the pageant award to the Carter, but I am thinking that there are some axis-like lock alternatives with upgraded materials at the same price point.
Where did you get that lanyard bead?
I just got one . Was a little disappointed . Beautiful knife but uncomfortable with the clip on ( I’m not a clip guy so so thought I’d be ok ) the lanyard holder is so sharp it digs into your palm like crazy . Decided to take both off and now I have a huge hole on the back . Trying to work out how to fix this . Review on my UA-cam channel coming in a couple of days . Great post Taylor . ✌🏼
Hi is that the stock lanyard on the Carter? if not where did you buy it from.
The factory that makes “The Elko” is selling it for 7.50 on Temu, you gotta go check it out, identical…, even has the James Brand logo on it, the only thing that they changed was “E” to “A”, so instead of James it says JAMAS, I got two of them, they just came in the mail today 😁
what scales do you have on your bugout?
Hey man where did you get the skull and cross bones lanyard/bead....looking and I can't find it. Blade HQ Rocks!
now that the Mini Bugout is out in pretty much the same size as this one (pun not intended :P), there's REALLY no point in this knife
if they kept the price, but upgraded their QC and steel (s35vn or thereabouts), i could see the point of it...
Love the look of this knife! Also what is that tool you use for the screws that looks very cool!
That’s a Combat Beads Precision Driver.
Best Damn EDC do you have a promo code for them
Hey man I have this knife and want to add a vinegar patina to the metal components but am wary of it's disassembly. I'm not concerned with voiding warranty, I got it secondhand. Have any advice?
Shabazz has a benchmade vid where he opens the pivot screw and the blade drops out but idk how similar the construction is
Motif squad!!
This knife looks good but I like the look of the gray version better. It's going on my wish list but after watching this I don't know that'll it be worth the money to me. I'd like to find something similar with gray scales less than $100
The clip looks like the James Chapter.
Personally I'm not a fan of James Brand too expensive for the quality and materials
Sounds like some of you guys like cheap knives lol
@@outdoorexpert4038 honestly I do and I buy a lot of "budget" knives from kershaw and CRKT lol but you can get a para 3 LW for what $110? And that knife will serve you far better than this one. I will say this one is prettier though lol
I love micarta and I love my Carter
Congrats you probably overpayed
For a another cheap Micarta fix, check out Civivi's upcoming Rustic Gent lockback.
What is the watch he is wearing?
Magnifique ce couteau 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hello Taylor. I love the look of your watch. Should you mind sharing the brand and model? Also the brand of the NATO strap? Thumbs up and keep up the good work! 👍🏼
It’s the Bertucci A-4T Illuminated with the original strap amzn.to/369giwW
I've just never understood this brand. It's almost like selling D2 for 800 bucks. I mean yeah, I get it, it's a good looking knife, but the materials they are using...
Expensive, mid grade materials AND made in china? Odd.
Ikr? Odd but not surprising. Thanks for answering that--I was checking the comments to see if anyone said where they're made. Definitely not spending the money for this brand.
Made in China.. i thought they were made in USA!! Good to know..
Nice
I don't know if your into wwe wrestling, but I think Kevin Owen's is your doppelganger
James Carter, FBI... I like the sound of that.
Ahhh, VG10 blade, good axislock, G10 handles, great action, whats not to like!
For 49 dollars, Amare Fieldbro, at Drop.
Or a bit more expensive at your dealer.
But NO way for about 150 dollars.
Anybody make micarta scales for the bugout yet?
I carry a knife it's never used would like a good all round knife for peeling apples to whitlin defence if need de
Rat1 or 2.
Who makes it?
At 85.00 it's a maybe at 150.00 it's a no. Great looking
Great website and packaging yeah, everything I want in a knife...
Honestly for what they do you shouldn't say the price thing is something the consumer should get past for the brand. The brand should have to either get past the price thing or make something worth the price. VG-10 is a fine steel but at 159 or 139 its not selling itself and when you have empty screw holes, bad blade centering, and people complaining about blade play you are selling over priced bad QC products. As for the Clovis that is another pretty good example about where they need to come in strong with QC because at that 400 dollar mark you are starting to flirt with a good deal on a small Sabenza and are well in the court of the Redencion. Two knives that i think most would be mad to not take over a James brand product. James brand could certainly make the knives to compete but if this is suppose to be a shinning star in the line up i think they missed the mark.
There seem to be to many flaws for the money. It's a nice design, but is it worth it? I'm thinking not.
As always great review.
I paid less for an M390 Manix 2. I've looked at a few of the James Brand knives, and they all seem flawed. Blade play or manufacturing quality control issues. The designs are nice, and they look good from a distance. The problem is the build quality isn't good enough to be a knife I would buy for the aesthetics and the materials aren't good enough to purchase as a worker. It seems to be a knife for people that want overpriced things to brag about, not really a knife for people that like knives or use knives.
When you can get a d2 civivi thats made in china, and actually quality for a third the price you know they are full of shit
Your commercial link are not avaible with ublock.
Do you think it's worth the price? Why so expensive? Is it the brand?
Nice knife I think I'm going to get this one
....I want your screwdriver!!
Why would you put a thumb disc on a axis lock knife.....
Dang I really want one lol mostly cuz my last name is James but still
Bertucci watch?
Bugouts were recently 99$
I want to love a bugout but just can't get past the plastic scales. I know you can get G10 but for $$$.
Just purchased one ☝️
Notif*
Nick shabazz has a review of another James brand and his commentary of their website is spot on: it looks like “everything Portland” 🤣
benchmade proper needs an axis lock version. this is nice but i prefer s30v over vg-10.
i feel like the james brand knife could do with out fancy packaging . the knife should cost around $85-$110 i price it as the endura or delica cause its Vg-10. at $153.99 it should be S30V.
A better comparison would be the Mini Griptilian
I absolutely love their designs like there is so much thought and design, but there is definitely a miss in value for me you could get a giant mouse ace Iona for $99 with m390 granted it has a liner lock and frn but the m390 is a huge upgrade. Same goes for even m390 kershaw which go for like $80. I really want to buy a James brand but the material to cost is something that I am really hung up on I just think they could do a lot better and if they did sell it for a much more reasonable price I am sure their sales would be off the charts because they really do have some kick ass designs!!
Notification squad were you at?
Zach yeah that’s what I’m saying! They forgot me to. It’s not the first time, it’s actually becoming the norm for some reason!
I'm sold on this knife #notifcationsquad
Im the opposite. Im avoiding completely
Whoa... I’m early...
Am pretty sure they sell on Huckberry which is also chock full of over-priced products whose quality doesn't match up to the price-point. Lots of better options for lessor $$$. IMHO
Think they have been on (MAss)Drop also...
I was surprised, given number of negative attributes you pointed out, that you still gave it such a favorable review. A few of those sounded like they were deal-killers for you.
