  • Poppyland (2016): The heroin trade has long fuelled Myanmar's civil war. For some, opium provides a roaring illicit income; for others, a modest farming job. But even with the war slowing down, the drug trade shows no sign of abating in Myanmar.

"If I didn't do this work, I would have no other source of income", explains a poppy farmer in a remote village. Myanmar's opium cultivation is now the second largest in the world after Afghanistan, with an abundant local trade. “Most of our village want to make the switch to farming coffee", says Panu, one of the first adopters of a UN backed coffee program.

Opium money has helped bankroll six decades of civil war in Myanmar. As the country now transitions towards a more peaceful future, its opium trade continues apace and shows little sign of slowing down.
"If I didn't do this work, I would have no other source of income and my family would go hungry", explains Nang Hkam Hrseh, a poppy farmer in a remote village in rural Myanmar. It's in places like this, far away from the prying eyes of tourists, that the vast majority of Myanmar's opium is grown, a yield which is now the second largest in the world after Afghanistan. Most of the heroin produced in Myanmar is exported through China to the rest of the world. But the local trade is also abundant, and has reached epidemic-sized proportions in some areas. "My sons were washed away on a tide of heroin", laments 68-year-old Daw Li. However, some villages are looking for ways to fight back against opium dependency. "I don't want my family to be involved in this business any more", asserts 67-year-old Panu, a resident of the isolated Pang Lyam village. Many of the villagers here have signed on to the UN’s crop replacement program and are making the switch from opium to coffee. With the end of military rule and the election of a new democratic government, there is renewed hope that the opium trade may be on the way out.

Being a neighbor to Myanmar, the Northeast India has been affecting badly by heroin flooding in from Myanmar ofcourse. From my region the Myanmar is only about 110km away. So eventually we do get it as cheap as around only $1 a piece. I was an addict actually, my teenage years and upto my late 20s was badly affected and was completely dependent to the substance. I went to rehab centre so many times and got relapse as many times as i even can't remember. By the grace of higher power, now I'm redeemed. I'm clean and sober for 4years and 9 months and 21days as of today 🙏

!00,000;s of prisoners withdraw from Opium, Heroin, Meths & cocaine while in prison. My brother & nephew are prison officials. As they point out virtually no one dies from drug withdrawal. Most severe symptoms disappear after about a week. That's not to say the craving stops.
Most prisoners dry out in prison, but are immediately readdicted upon release.

Australia almost did away with heroin until doctors stopped prescribing pain medications because of US fentanyl abuse levels; they're more worried about a medicare audit than breaching their duty of care. So patients with slabs of paperwork proving they're chronic pain sufferers end up buying drugs on the street. I'd say 99% of all drug users I have encountered who use heroin during charity work are pain sufferers whom the Australian medical system refuses to treat, so they have to go elsewhere if they want to keep working and have a life. Maybe we should consider legalizing opium and heroin if our doctors refuse to treat patients.

No matter who your or mine god is, it is up to you to do the work and up to you to bear the pain and the stigma for your whole life. It is you who has to start owning up on your mistakes, starts taking responsibility for them and needs to make amends for them, not god. It is you who has to make the decision every single day to stay clean, endure the pain and shame, not god. And it is you who needs to rise above and beyond, far beyond you ever did before, to start a new life without addiction, not god, he has nothing to do with it and while i thank my gods for many things in my life, addiction is not one of them. Sure Morana did not take me when i od'd, and im gratefull for that, and sure by not taking me she inspired new life in me and a wish to live it better but ultimately was on me to stop shooting up, get into a program and work it. Last year after a horrific industrial accident I was on morphine for 7 months. Morphine is one molecule away from heroin and I pity anyone who has become addicted to any opiate. I absolutely hated the drug and it's soporific effect on my mind, the physical side effects are just awful. I weaned myself of morphine by myself because I hated it,if you enjoyed the feeling then I think you would be lost to the drug. Coming off morphine was not a nice experience at all but after a week I was feeling clear and sleeping a bit better. I have honestly never once craved the drug as I hated it so much. It must be terrible for these poor people living in poverty with no future and heroin is their escape from despair.

Opiates are great if your pain is incurable and nothing else helps, though. There's a huge lack of legal opiates, mostly in poor countries, so growing poppies is not an issue by itself.

This reporter only reports the negative aspects of people's views on heroin. The people who died probably had poor health to begin, until I see an autopsy I cannot believe that anyone died there from heroin. I used pure raw heroin for 10 years, and I thank god every day for it. it saved my life. cured my depression, helped with anxiety, and PTSD. Also it helped with my back pain each and every day that I used and I probably would not be alive today if It were not for heroin. I probably would have took my own life because of how much pain I was in. Ive said it before and ill say it again. THANK GOD FOR HEROIN, it is a gift and a blessing. at least for me it was. id still use it if I wasn't on probation. and if your a hater and you want to hate on my words than your probably not hating from experience, I only speak from experience therefor I only speak my truth. thank you all, be blessed

What are they guilty of exactly? I am an ex-opiate addict, nobody wants to be an addict, it sneaks up on you, the whole thing just shows the absurdity of the war on drugs/ THe farmers are poor, they have little option, the addicts are troubled, they wish to escape much as someone who drinks, it is society that creates the conditions of inequality, poverty and overwork that lead to the physical and mental pain people are trying to escape, it is society that then pursues a war on those who fall into the trap of addiction, and the only ones benefiting are the cartels and criminals who are given an unregulated market to exploit. Society loses to the crime and disease spread by this market and then pays to pursue a futile effort to erradicate it and lock people away. They then destroy poppy fields as fentanyl floods in to replace it- great strategy!

I traveled to the Golden Triangle, and unfortunately for most of these people there are few viable options to make a living. They need to earn a living and opium is their best option. They also get no help from their govt. I suspect that most users do it because they see no future and want an escape. Unfortunately, opium, heroin are some of the most addicting drugs, so once they start it's very hard to stop. Good to see that they are trying new crops, it has been tried many times before, maybe coffee can be a viable crop. I read that saffron has been tried in Afghanistan, it's even more valuable than opium. I wonder if they could try it there?

I went through this part of Burma about 20 years ago. From Thailand through Keng Tung up to China. Very pretty country. It was actually fairly safe , Shan state Army had the place under control. Opium poppy was everywhere. If you told me thrn that in 20 years we would not have reformed drug laws to decriminalise illicit drugs and there would be the same problem in 2020 as in 1980 or 2000 I would not have believed you. We are so slow to learn when it comes to drug reform in Australia. Quickest solution is to use government money to buy opium from the farmers cheap then destroy it . Do that for 10 years while you organise growing coffee or whatever else.

thats partly true but im not sure it works that way in the small villages shown, as they said in the local communities they are dirt poor and are still able to supply themselves with heroin... basically its dirt cheap there and I dont think legalizing it would make it any cheaper, atleast not at the local level. The amount of money that heroin costs really has more to do with what the local economy can bear, its actually dirt cheap to make.
I disagreed when the presenter said that opium was the source of the conflict, but i agree that it is what fuels it, atleast to a large degree, as would any sufficient source of finances.
Lastly even if it was legalized the drug traffickers would still make huge amounts of money, because their markets arnt local or even within the country mostly, the markets are in other countries that have bigger economies(and thus can afford to pay more for something they are severely addicted to). The only way legalization works is if first world countries legalize it and put all the money they save from enforcement and incarceration into addiction research and treatment. I believe fully there will come a day when we understand the human body well enough that we could eradicate addiction, even if we took what was normally addictive substances. I think its likely it could happen in our lifetime.

    • @froogsleegs

Agreed, the global focus should be on harm reduction and fair profitability rather than punishment and exploitation. The war on drugs has inevitably failed and it's high time for a different tack, these people could benefit enormously and have a better quality of life if it was regulated properly and efforts were made to make the trade safe. The black market for drugs will never fully disappear but drugs is the crux of it and it holds up other terrible things such as shady arms dealing and human trafficking, money works its way up the chain until it's paying for really awful things. The profits made from legal drugs could be used to improve healthcare services and provide rehab centres for addicts in many countries, I know the UK would benefit enormously from legalisation and decriminalisation. In Switzerland they have clinics where addicts can get pure heroin, clean needles, a bed, a shower and social support. Because of all of this they have more time and opportunity to focus on moving on from addiction and standing on their own two feet again, instead of drifting about day by day scraping together money through prostitution and theft to buy more. Their drug abuse rate is incredibly low and it's mostly attributed to their attitude towards drugs and addiction, over there they see it as a treatable disease rather than a social cancer. Legalising drugs would have many knock-on effects both positive and negative, at first the rates of use could shoot up as it becomes available but the treatment that appears alongside it would be far more effective. Psychologists know very well that negative reinforcement, ie. punishment, humiliation, derision, etc. Is almost completely benign compared to positive reinforcement like encouragement and support. Duterte is using his policies as an excuse to discretely wipe out groups of people he considers unfavorable in civilised society but at the same time he's alienating a huge portion of the population who are forced to become involved in drugs through poverty. As the saying goes, you get more with sugar than you do salt.

Heroin is bad but if you shut yourself in a room for 5 days you'll exit that room completely normal, although weak. Since I'm a functioning member of society, - I have a small business to run and a family, I can'r disappear for 6 months or more to come back clean. Methadone is great for the criminal element of drug addiction where it removes addicts from the street and gives them an opportunity to live normal life.
