Gone to soon! Grew up in Dallas. The hard rock / metal scene was full throttle back in the day. Way before GC, we had a couple great music stores. Was taking my LP Custom to Brook Mayes Pro Shop off Mockingbird for a refret quote. Think it was 1983 if I recall. Walking in, I hear some dude just ripping it up. We had some good local players around but something about his playing made me stop and walk over and listen. After a few mintues he says hey man whats up, I respond with something like wow man, that was allsum blah blah. He says hey man thanks, just fooling around passing some time. I asked his name, he says I am Darrell. Nice to meet you. Back then he was just Darrell Abbott. Still had that crazy hair and skinny as a stick. Later I saw him with Pantera at a local club doing some cover tunes and recall meeting him that day. I am glad he made it to the big time and was an empact on so many with his playing. Local boy does good. RIP Brother Darrell!

Hey gang - my mouth made a typo again.
In the last lick - it's a C# MAJOR arpeggio (not C# minor).
    Doh!

That George Lynch lick is no surprise, Pantera would open for Dokken when they were doing shows in Texas and Louisiana. We're talking about smaller venues like gyms and such. It must have been around Tooth and Nail time line for Dokken so '84ish. Dime was a sponge and a melting pot of the best players. I became aware of Pantera right before Cowboys came out. A brother of a friend of mine was and older guitarist and would hit the club scene in Dallas. He had Power Metal on vinyl and was in his room practicing guitar and had that on the turn table. When they went worldwide it was a testament that through hard work and paying your dues, anything is possible. When they opened for Skid Row I was 7th row and they blew Skid Row away! The energy of the crowd feeding off the band and vice versa was supernatural. I met Dime in '99, at of all things, a Bad Company show that David Lee Roth with Bart Walsh on guitar was the opening band. What do you say to a legend?!?! I asked to see his hands, expecting to see the years of brutality that he put his digits through, or some abnormally large hands. Nope, they were clean and probably a bit smaller than I was expecting. Normal for him as he was a pretty short dude. There are still some runs that he does that I would like to see broken down. Psycho Holiday is one of them. We'll meet again is another. I've tried to slow them down but they get this weird swirling effect like he has a doubler on. Maybe that MXR Phase/Doubler he had?

That last lick is an absolute face melter . I have always thought my metal playing just sounded like blues but played faster . I have had a number of guitar teachers in my time ranging from school teacher types to a recovering heroin addict who resembled all of the Ramones but I have learned more about metal playing from the Three for All’s than in the last 10 years !
Thanks very much DB I am really chuffed tonight 😆 🇬🇧

Huge fan of Dime since before Cowboys was released. Although those earlier albums weren't really my cup of tea, it was obvious the cat could really play for a hair metal dude.. Cowboys was such a great surprise, so much heavier than what I was expecting. Another great lesson, the tabs are super helpful

I saw Pantera open for Skid Row in Atlanta and owned the Cowboys album, but I guess I never really listened much or got into them, so I probably underestimated him as a guitarist. Thanks for shedding some light on this and many other guitarists. I find myself watching your videos, even on guitarists I've never heard of because they're so well done.

Awesome how lick #2 worked its way to the ending of shredfest of Shattered, and lick #3 found itself to that pinch harmonic part in CFH (that appears just at the end) as well as in Revolution Is My if I remember correctly (btw - headed to the original video, they're jamming BATTERY! not Damage inc.!).
Also - I really dig your work, insight, and not least of all - your chill laid back demeanor! There TOO many shouty UA-camrs around :)

Awesome lesson! Are you an Alexi Laiho fan? His guitar playing reminds me of Dime mixed with Rhodes and Jake E Lee. He's got some really great solos, single note melodies, chord progressions, lots of like little fills and nuances. If I could sway you into a lesson one day I would love to watch haha =)

Can you analyze the solo in ‘it makes them disappear ‘ off of reinventing the steel? When I hear it I’m amazed at the control over the guitar neck he has. He showed that guitar who the boss was.

Hey Dave greetings from Niagara falls Canada! When you have a sec I really hope you read this full msg and my future requests within 😊:
1st of all I'm so mad that I only discovered this channel yesterday 2nd for all THANK YOU for all of your videos specifically this one: keeping Dime ALIVE!, kings X, Chris Poland (amazing job dimystifying that shred wizard lol,) Lynch and satchel WOW Well. Done man DAMN all of your content kicks ass!🙏🤘
    *
    What's your email mate??
    * I want to send some crazy UNDERRATED guitar players to hopefully make it into your next
"3 late night licks/in the style" of etc video tutorials! *
I'm going to provide some licks/songs tabbed out nearly 100% if youre up for it I'll email you the guitarists (who's licks have never been taught on UA-cam by anyone btw probably because they're so damn unique!) maybe you can incorporate these and then some of your ideas and delivery /breakdown from the material. They are in pdf and guitar pro format.
    *
I'm sure the licks I send you will honestly be more than enough cause they are loaded with style and use alot of different nuances/ techniques alt picking, fingerstyle, you'll see it over email since I cannot send the files over UA-cam, you can choose wherever you want to go with them all I ask is you don't provide the full tabs for free but instead just post screenshots of said tab on the screen like you have already been doing in these style lessons that's all good :)
    *
I know you said you acknowledge all the subscriber messages even if you don't reply but I Really hope you see/reply to this message when you have the chance because you will be pleasantly surprised by some of these players😁🤘🙏😊!
    * to conclude this novel here's some of the guitarists and the tabs to some licks/songs by them that I will send your way :
    - Richard fortus
(the tab for his gnr live solo spot, insane he's like Richie kotzen meets bucket head)
    - Michael Lee firkins
(the tab for "Rain in the tunnel, Hula hoops, laughing stacks and various other licks of his. All which cannot be found on ultimate guitar etc.
    - Phil X (bias incoming, Canada's evh, Steve Vai etc. His 1989 song Flippin out" is like his own cheeky take on eruption or a live solo spot while still sounding like himself.
    - Ian Thornley : easily Canada's Eric Johnson if you never listened to Big wreck or thronley " I INVITE you to do so, you can see his playing in a lot of suhr demos as well.
If I was in a position to donate something like $20 month to your patreon I would instantly, but since I am not take this as my way of giving back to your amazing channel here, just your rant /discussion style videos ontop of the lick lessons are so down to earth I feel like your talking to me through the screen I wish I had a guitar teacher like you near me.
    * If I did have 1 request out of everything here, it's if you can cover Ian Thornley OR Richard Fortus first 😉because No one can touch these guys, if you look beyond the cover of fortus's image especially you will find a guy who is the perfect match for slash in GnR.
    *
Anyways Hope to hear from you whenever you get a chance dude! thank you again for everything you put into these videos, they will never go unnoticed by me and many other subscribers of yours I'm sure this channel of yours deserves so much and I think the community you have growing here in the various comment sections is already proving that.
    best regards cheers !
    🤘😊
    - Adam

I finally got to meet Firkins last summer and he's such a monster.
Thornley and those other guys are wicked too.
Thanks for watching and for this comment too - I'll see what I can do.

@@LateNightLessons hey man you're soo welcome no worries Dave! *what's your email*?
So I can send you all the tabs/pdfs I have made for those guys asap tomorrow when I'm back from work!
The b side shredders that go unnoticed are always the ones that get me out of a slump for some reason not to say they're better than the hendrixs and evhs and so on but a guy like firkins as you mentioned is just a monster and has that magic to him and his sound that no one can really copy! THANK YOU MAN I appreciate the timely reply wow you're quick haha all the best Dave can't wait to see Richard fortus, Ian thornley, Michael lee firkins etc
      All the best! 🤘👌🙏🙏😊
