  • An 11 day, solo, Arctic Packrafting and Hiking Expedition in Tuktut Nogait National Park, over 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, to paddle the dormant white water Hornaday Canyons from Uyarsivik Lake to the Arctic Ocean. This is the least visited National Park in North America, one of the most remote and isolated. In 2023, a single visitor permit was issued, and I was lucky enough to be the recipient. I worked and researched for over 2 years to put this trip together. I would traverse, chart, and paddle the Hornaday River through the Canyons, publish a map with the details needed for others to follow and visit this beautiful section of river. This section of river was first attempted in 1977 by Larry Osgood and team. They were successful in paddling a good portion of the canyons, portaging out of the canyons when needed. In July of 1999, the Beaudry Team, comprised of professional kayakers, became the first and only full descent of the Hornaday Canyons. No one has attempted it since.
    For the Hornaday Canyon Map, Gear List, River History and relevant info for planning your trip to Tuktut Nogait and paddling the canyons: suluk46.com/arctic-canyons
    Episode 3 consists of paddling the upper 3rd canyon until I eventually reach La Ronciere Falls. I camp on the ledge on river right, before paddling below the falls for epic photo opportunities. There are still 4 more days pf paddling and hiking to make it to the Arctic Ocean.
    I would like to personally thank the people of Paulatuk for their extremely warm hospitality towards me. I was welcomed with open arms and cannot even begin to express how lovely everyone was. The Inuvialuit are a kind and caring community and I hope to go back and visit my friends again in the future.
    FOR THOSE LOOKING TO PADDLE THE CANYONS:
    Parks Canada will LIKELY not endorse your trip, since rescue capacity is very limited in Tuktut Nogait National Park due to it’s remote location, and an uncomplicated rescue could take up to 4 days. The park has no high angle rescue capacity in the North, so extraction from high walled canyons would require up to a week for a certified rescue team to arrive. Should you decide to continue with your trip plan, Parks Canada MAY advise you to obtain private rescue insurance, come fully prepared for self-rescue and emergencies, such as cold water submersion, hypothermia, and bear encounters. Be sure to carry equipment for a cold weather climate and extreme winds, first aid, and emergency beacon or satellite radio.

    Hope you all enjoyed the video, more to come!
    1) For Gear List, Canyon Map, and other relevant info on this trip: suluk46.com/arctic-canyons
    2) My boat is an Alpacka Gnarwhal packraft, with full white water rigging (thigh straps, backband, skirt) and my gear stores inside the inflated tubes
    3) Want to know more details about this trip? ua-cam.com/users/livezYne_egt3fQ?si=QJTUilwHig0XfgkB I was on the Canoehound Outdoor Adventure Show and did a 2 hour interview about this trip.

    What an epic trip mate. So inspiring and executed so well! I’m brand new to Pack rafting but have definitely caught the bug. Much respect from Australia!

    Man this really is pretty epic. That waterfall was pretty spectacular. The remote nature and the fact that you are solo adds a whole different element.

      @@Suluk46 Yea man you have quite a bit of stuff on here- Glad I found your channel. I small cataract would be perfect for that stretch of river minus the portage potential. The packraft seems to give you a lot of options. I have not utilized one yet- maybe a packraft material cat tubes with a carbon fiber/titanium frame needs to be engineered! Take care!

      I am very lucky to have traveled through this land. It has rich history, is stunning, and there is no end of side trips that I could have embarked on. I will definitely be back.

    The climb down at the falls looked very tedious. No place for a canoe! I definitely get the appeal of pack rafting for trips like this. Beautiful scenery again! Thanks!

      Happy you liked it. Was a bit of work getting through this section but still a lot of fun. Below the waterfall is the tallest and longest canyon, so should make for a fun video.

    Awesome stuff! Any regrets not bringing a freestanding tent? 😅

    • @Suluk46
      @Suluk46  7 місяців тому +1

      I don't think so. I haven't owned a freestanding tent for probably 20 years so I'm pretty good and setting these types of shelters up, even in rock. I mostly wish I had a solid interior for the constant ripping wind...it was relentless.

    Awesome series so far!
    Just think, this river only gets paddled once every 22-24 years. Let's call it once per quarter century. Good find and appropriate timing.
    Did they only allow one permit this season or was it more like you were the only one who sought one?

    • @Suluk46
      @Suluk46  6 місяців тому

      They will give out more, it's just a tough park to get to and the approval process isn't the easiest. Not hard, but you have to have a pretty solid plan, best to have some previous experience.
