- Our University is delighted to announce that Princess Mako of Akishino has been awarded her postgraduate degree in Museum Studies.
Princess Mako has achieved her Master’s degree in Art Museum and Gallery Studies after a year in the department and studying on campus.
Speaking at a press opportunity marking the end of her year of taught Master’s degree, Princess Mako said in Japanese that "her time at the University of Leicester had been ‘a wonderful experience'."
She later added: “I would like to express my sincere gratitude for having had the opportunity to pursue my studies in such a favourable environment. It has been a very fruitful year for me. I hope to apply what I have learned at postgraduate school in the future."
President and Vice-Chancellor of our University Professor Paul Boyle said: “Leicester’s School of Museum Studies is world-renowned and is among the highest ranked research departments in the UK. We are delighted that Princess Mako chose to study with us and trust that she had a wonderful time in Leicester. We will be proud to count her among our alumni and hope that she will continue to engage with our University in the future.”
Her Imperial Highness Princess Mako of Akishino is a member of the Japanese Imperial Family. She is the eldest daughter of Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess of Akishino and the first-born granddaughter of Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

The duchess has had a learning curve alright, but she seems to be fit for the position. Good for her (and for William)!
Her degree is not as useless as most people think. Japan has a lot of historical artifacts that are preserved in their museums especially the Three Sacred Treasures.

one of the most worthless degrees is in criminology or similar topics where there are few detective positions per city plus the fact these institutions prefer to hire internally, many similarities to her degree. They end up filling positions where their state subsidised degree was not used whatsoever, however this is an international student she will have paid for her course at premium, and so she is simply able to decide to take this enjoyable course considering she will always have wealth; gladly this is not a direct burden on the UK state as it would be if she were British.
Some say her degree is useless and yet it will be useless for anyone who don’t have the passion and appreciation for arts. Please refrain insulting other people chosen degree and path. Especially in the internet it might bite you back in the future. Peace ✌🏻

@Sky Sky , Architecture isn't pure art but design. The same to industrial or product design. Both disciplines need engineering and mathematical knowledge to a certain degree. But I do agree that an art degree is not a waste. People who say art is useless is just because they know nothing about it or that they are not interested in it. They think their backgrounds surpass those of art background. No need to pay attention to such little opinion.

Lol people forgetting that as an Art Dealer or Art/Museum Director you could make really good money, especially if you have connections (like her) to get a job at very lucrative museums, art galleries or artifact auctions (like Sotheby's) etc.

people are shitting on her degree but forget that as a female royal in japan, you are not allowed to hold a real job. you are subject to menial housekeeping tasks and volunteer work. her degree would've been useful had she stayed in the royal family as she most likely would've spent her life managing the royal museum. now that she's no longer a royal, she can actually go get a real job in areas that she's passionate about.

Who cares? More and more graduates of different degrees can apply in any industry unless it’s in the medical, law, IT and engineering. I knew a lot of art graduates who’s working in corporate offices. So why stress yourself with hard subjects when u can go for the easy route, you’ll still have high chances of working in the corporate so long as u have a bachelors. 🙄

And because she would still have connections to the royal family, she would still have some “influences” even though it would be much milder. All I can say is, the rich has more ways to stay rich than you think, I mean I’m pretty sure the royal family has a team of professional lawyers and accountants to make sure they’ll never go broke.

If you're the son of a billionaire, training as a plumber would be bloody useless for you. But if you're from a working class or middle class background that same training can get you a good income, hence it'll be useful.
