10:08 Uh, do these people not realize Empress Emerita Michiko, the current Empress Masako, and Princess Kiko (Mako's mother) were all commoners who married into the royal family? And that there are 7 other living royal women who married out of the family? Princess Ayako only got married 3 years ago. Clearly people have the memory of goldfish. Princess Mako's case wasn't special at all until the public decided to hate on Komuro for his mother's actions and his hair. What a load of crap. Edit to clarify since this comment is blowing up: According to the Imperial Household Law of 1947 male royals can marry commoner women into the royal family, but female royals must give up their royal status if they marry a commoner. In addition, the Japanese aristocracy other than those directly related to Emperor Showa (Hirohito) lost their royal status after World War II, so there are no other royals to marry in Japan. In other words, royal women have no choice but to lose their royal status and marry a commoner or remain single. Or perhaps marry a non-Japanese royal but that is pretty unlikely.
When a female commoner married a prince they are brought into royal family but when a male commoner married a princess they have to leave royal family?
@@greentea8852 No problem. This was not originally the case, and the royal family was far more extensive long ago, but things changed after World War II. There were branch royal families that lost their royal status because of that law, too.

This is not the case. When the engagement was announced in 2017, the media and the public didn't criticize him, in fact they looked upon him favorably. It was only after his mother's money problems were reported by a weekly magazine that he started to be criticized. After that, various problems were reported and the criticism against him grew louder. It is normal for people in the imperial family to marry common people, and this is not seen as a problem. Like all mass media. Take the bits that are appealing to the masses. Not the truth. Low status, commoner... Japanese people never had an issue with this. Foreign media seems to finds that impossible and so they weave a tale that people would enjoy.

What Japanese people are afraid of is that Japanese taxpayers' money is going to be spent on her to keep her living standard. Kei Komuro is obviously not for a lawyer. He fails to reasonably refute the allegation he and his mother face, and on the contrary distrust of him is spreading among people . A lot of people doubt he is able to succeed. The old lady getting interviewed in the dark showed the most empathy towards Mako as a human being and as a woman. This is something Mako truly wanted. She is right. But I also understand why people would be wary of Kei K. I would want my friend to marry someone I know would be able to provide for and protect her (even if she is fully capable of it herself.) specially someone that might have money problems. Him failing the bar exam kinda signalled like flashing lights to the world that he's not ready for marriage, but as a woman who has loved, I know her feelings don't care about that. I'm glad she married and I wish her all the best.
As a Japanese, I feel this problem very complicated. Before some problems about Kei Komuro were discovered, many Japanese people blessed and welcomed their marriage. But then, his mother's financial problems and the process by which they made all the decisions forcibly for marriage were the reasons for the harder criticism. And now they have been criticized for spending large amounts of tax privately. And it was also because Princess Mako criticized the citizens at the briefing session for the citizens. Of course it is not hair issue 😂 It is believed that his personality cannot protect Princess Mako. On the other hand, many people support and worry about her. The media broadcasts radically. Things are much worse than they were a few years ago.... *And Mako didn't give up Royal, basically She wanted to leave the imperial family. because being princess is tired.
Actually there is a saying in my race. Better marry someone who loves you then someone you love. Now can only hope he behave himself and remain faithful to her in the land of affairs.
That's ok if princess Mako is happy to live with Kei. She has a different point of view about love. She probably better spent money on someone she loves than receive money from someone she doesn't love or pretending to love. Princess Mako is pure and original decision not a fake one. That's my thought.
I think the problem is the groom, not the bride. As a man, I will protect my wife if I'm married. But men who don't or can't protect his wife is a loser. My dad was a wife-beater, sometimes I'm confused why my mom doesn't want a divorce.,

Japanese people's taxes pay for the royal family, so they have a right to be concerned to an extent. I have a similar view about korean, it just doesn't sound good to me, very strange and most words seem weird to me when pronounced. Doesn't mean the language is bad, just the tone I hear in k-pop ain't doin it for me
Honestly, I think it's good that Princess Mako chose to marry someone she loved and not someone that was arranged just to keep up with orthodox practices & beliefs. Of course many people (especially older people) would be shocked that Princess Mako broke traditions. I think she Princess Mako made the right choice, and it's impressive she did so knowing that they would lose her royal status. Traditions & cultures are fine. But I think many of these beliefs & practices are antiquated and overly restrictive; especially for modern society.
Kind of left out of this story is that because so much of the Japanese aristocracy was wiped out in WW2, there are pretty much no possible non-commoner matches for the princesses. The peerage except the core royal family were abolished, so she pretty much is only allowed to marry a cousin if she wanted to stay a princess and there are none for her to marry. edit: Note this was done intentionally by the American occupational force to prevent the imperial family being used to re-establish fascist/nationalist control in Japan. The imperial family is extremely privileged but lives under very strict conditions constitutionally.
That she made the right choice is very debatable. I hope he is more like a shoujo manga character than the regular japanese, otherwise she will be cheated on multiple times and face loneliness in at least 3 years. I seriously wouldn't trade the certain financial support and comfort of royal status for a marriage that may fail. Of course, we all hope that there is such a thing as true love and she will be forever happy with her own decision, because it was certainly a very bold and difficult one.
If you understand Japanese history, you will know how they revere the Emperor and feel very protective about him. As one of the persons said they are such nice , kind and down to Earth royals ever lived. And it's no wonder they feel so protective of the princess. One person worrying about her living in the apartment from now shows how important she is to them.
As a native Japanese, I would say it's quite an old fashioned way to revere the Emperor and feel very protective about him. Emperor system is gradually becoming a past heritage that had played the great roll in the history. People respect it and not challenge it but aren't very much interested in it anymore.
I don't know about that, have you heard about the queen of Denmark? She smokes, watches football, designs clothes, paints, and was the pen pal of Tolkien under a pseudonym, and illustrated the first ever illustrated version of lord of the rings. They might not have responsibility in the law, but they have to choose either doing the 'right' thing(returning money on behalf of the debt, the logic behind this was they got benefit since some of that money were used to their education) or being cancelled. Even entertainers have pressure like this... I can't imagine how much pressure there would be if we had actual royal family.
Just an assumption but kinda like the British Monarchy, each member of the royal family is entitled to certain amount of assets and financial holdings. So maybe she had to give up some of those assets.
Is it a bigger deal because she is the woman marrying out instead of a girl marrying in? Just like with the British royal family, Kate Middleton is a commoner marrying a prince so is marrying into the royal family. Maybe they are making it a big deal because she is female instead of male.

Unfortunately, boundaries hardly come by in asia culture due to its collectivism mindset. Hence, if you live in asia, phrases like married with the families is very familiar.
I feel very sad that the Japanese people who oppose this marriage are misunderstood. Due to the following facts that English news does not report, we Japanese learned of Kei's repeated lies. Because of that, we objected him to become a relative of our Imperial Family (the symbol of Japan; existing by the trust, respect, and taxes from people): When this money problem between Kei's mother and her ex-fiance was discovered (2017), Kei was asked by Akishino (Mako's father), which he replied "I didn't know about this at all." However, Kei himself joined the meeting about this money problem with his mother and her ex-fiance, then recorded the conversation (2012). Kei, who was ordered to explain to the public by Akishino, created "Komuro Document" by quoting only a part of the recorded data and published it (April 2021). He turned the ex-fiance into a liar, claimed it was not a debt but a gift. Immediately after that, the ex-fiance submitted all the recorded data, then we found out that Kei was a liar. Only four days after Komuro Document was released, Kei changed his attitude and announced his intention to pay the settlement fee. However, after that, though the ex-fiance proposed a discussion for the settlement fee, Kei kept refusing it and ignoring him. Six months after the announcement of the intention of the settlement fee, Kei forced the marriage without solving anything (October 2021). At the press conference immediately after the marriage (October 26, 2021), Kei said, "Occasionally, my mother and I have expressed to her ex-fiance our gratitude." "I received a positive response from him regarding the negotiations." However, the ex-fiance later announced "There is no such fact in either case." After getting married, Kei finally met him just before he went to the United States and "agreed to pay a settlement fee" (November 2021), but the source of the money is not disclosed. In addition, Mako announced at the press conference after marriage that "I let Kei do that to his mother's ex-fiance since 2017." Also, Kei got a job at a high-end bank in Tokyo (although he quit it soon), entered a national graduate school, studied abroad in New York with a grant (Only one student can get the scholarship at Fordham University, but Kei didn't pass the bar exam though many of his classmates passed), and lived in New York for years. These unfair and costly lifestyle was helped by Akishino (through his friends). On the other hand, the ex-fiance ran out of money due to Kei's studying abroad at UCLA (2012) and the numerous luxurious demands by Kei's mother, he became unable to pay his mortgage and sold his house and car. He is now still working for a living in his 70s. About Kei's mother, she commits Survivor's pension fraud and Sickness/Injury benefits fraud. But the police doesn't investigate her though they arrest other people for the same crimes. These unfairness and abuse of power by the Imperial Family violate the Constitution of Japan. We Japanese have lost a great deal of trust and respect for our Imperial Family in the last few years. We feel hopeless the Imperial line will be moved to the Akishino family after the current Emperor retires.

Everybody is getting married to commoners, both princes and princesses. Current empress Masako is a former commoner, so as Michiko, mother of emperor. The interviewer seemed to read too much into what backrush she will have to face if she forced the real reason why their marriage was such a problem for Japanese society. It's that Kei Komuro's mother is embroiled in scandalous after another with financial dealings before he even grew up. His mother is thought to have cheated Japanese tax law in inheritance of her husband's (gloom's dad) suicide and her father's in law's suicide just 3 days earlier and whence she was able to send her son to a prestigious schools including Int'l Christian University which would have cost arm and legs for a single mother. Also She was with so called fiance for quite sometimes and borrowed (gift according to her) $400.000 (4mil yen) to pay for his schooling. And just in the recent years it became know she was falsifying her health status to receive governmental medical supplemental assistance. The amount may not be as much as some currupt politicians but you're talking of Japanese imperial household here. They live on tax payers money so it's imperative they'd be without any gossips whatsoever. Or it wouldn't be a big deal as this wasn't the first time imperial princess marries out to a commoner. Empress mother and current empress were commoners for god's sake.
Does it even matter who she marries? It's not like women are included in the line of succession. Women might as well be excluded from the family proper from birth.

@@dumuzidtherisingphoenix There are no other aristocrats in Japan since the Americans forced the dissolution of the peerage as a condition of occupation/surrender, since they had supported the military junta during WW2. The core imperial family was the only one spared for constitutional purposes. But basically it means a princess either has to wait to marry a first cousin (not gonna happen in this day and age), go unmarried, or leave the royal family.
Hey Asian Boss, I thought you have a Japanese member and wonder why you are making such a misleading video. Nobody here in Japan is against Mako marrying a commoner. They are not happy with her marrying Kei Komuro as his mother had some issues with debit and so on. Everyone from Royal family has been marrying commoners and that is the only way to get married, right? We have no issue with that since marrying within the family means incest, right? This video is misleading and I am sure Kei from Asian Boss is from Japan.
As far as I know, a lot of Japanese nationals regard Princess Mako`s marriage to Mr. Kei Komuro negatively because Mr. Komuro`s mother allegedly obtained money by fraud. In addition, many Japanese people also accuse Crown Prince Akishino that he failed to teach his three children properly as public figures. Unlike his elder brother, he did not learn kingcraft. In conclusion, many Japanese subjects are concered that this marriage could impair the dignity of the Imperial Family.

I’m so happy and proud of her for being brave and following her heart! I feel bad that they made her give up her royalty but it may be the beginning of more freedom and happiness! Now she doesn’t have to live up to any expectations or pretend to be someone she’s not.
As far as I'm aware, rules against royals/nobles marrying commoners were almost universally put in place because if it happened, it would significantly reduce the legitimacy of the family and therefore threaten their position as royals/nobility. Since that is far less of a concern nowadays, I'd argue that that rule is outdated, even though I'd still argue that it should be encouraged that the royal family still not marry commoners since, even now, if every single person in the family is married to some random person in the street, they would lose a significant amount of legitimacy.
I will talk about the reasons why I opposed the marriage of Kei Komuro and Mako. The Japanese media and the government ignore and hide them. ・Father and paternal grandparents commit suicide ・ Mother illegally receives survivor's pension ・ Mother illegally receives injury and illness allowance ・ Recorded discussions with former fiancée and claimed to be gifts rather than debts ・ Gift tax is through ・ Although it was announced that it would pay 4 million borrowed from a former fiancé, it was through to the present situation. ・ Suspicion emerged that forced classmates to drop out due to bullying ・ After proposing to Mako, she got a job at the Marunouchi branch of Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, which only allows elites to enter. ・ She suddenly changed jobs to a major law firm that she knew the Akishinomiya family, even though she was not a graduate of the law department. ・ Ignore the admission qualifications of Hitotsubashi University Graduate School ・ She is just a clerk, but she studies abroad with a scholarship at work. ・ After returning to Japan, I studied abroad with support on the premise that I would work at my original workplace, but I got a job overseas. ・ Do not mention the amount borrowed from the law firm ・ Appeal her Mako's fiance with her application ・ Individual guidance at university for some reason ・ Obtain a scholarship given to 1 in 200 excellent students who are neither native language nor specialized ・ Although it should be excellent enough to get a scholarship, it is not selected as an excellent student ・ Appeal Mako's fiance with her resume ・ Lie that she went to a Dentsu intern in her resume ・ She lied in her career that she was selected as an excellent performer for the second consecutive year when she was a bank clerk. She is supposed to have won the JFk Award (American National Heroic Award) but is not on the list of winners ・ Do not get fired even if you misrepresent your career ・ The name has been deleted from the Fordham University graduation list. ・ Suspicion of student visa fraud emerged ・ She has just become a member of society, but for some reason she is in a situation where she can move to New York. ・ Unknowingly, the Japanese History Museum has been built in New York. ・ The law has changed to make it easier for overseas lawyers to work in Japan.

Edit to clarify since this comment is blowing up:
According to the Imperial Household Law of 1947 male royals can marry commoner women into the royal family, but female royals must give up their royal status if they marry a commoner.

This is not the case.

It was only after his mother's money problems were reported by a weekly magazine that he started to be criticized.

Monarchy should be abolished. It is 21st century not middle age.
What Japanese people are afraid of is that Japanese taxpayers' money is going to be spent on her to keep her living standard. Kei Komuro is obviously not for a lawyer. @@killakame-3434 What's not to be happy? I mean the princes married a commoner too. Don't they feel disrespected because the princes mixed up the royal bloodline?
The stupidity.

Traditions & cultures are fine. But I think many of these beliefs & practices are antiquated and overly restrictive; especially for modern society.
Her father married a commoner too. She is following in her father’s footsteps

Just an assumption but kinda like the British Monarchy, each member of the royal family is entitled to certain amount of assets and financial holdings. So maybe she had to give up some of those assets.

Kei is probably the longest working person I know working for asian boss
I feel very sad that the Japanese people who oppose this marriage are misunderstood.
Due to the following facts that English news does not report, we Japanese learned of Kei's repeated lies.
Because of that, we objected him to become a relative of our Imperial Family (the symbol of Japan; existing by the trust, respect, and taxes from people):
When this money problem between Kei's mother and her ex-fiance was discovered (2017), Kei was asked by Akishino (Mako's father), which he replied "I didn't know about this at all."
However, Kei himself joined the meeting about this money problem with his mother and her ex-fiance, then recorded the conversation (2012).
At the press conference immediately after the marriage (October 26, 2021), Kei said, "Occasionally, my mother and I have expressed to her ex-fiance our gratitude." "I received a positive response from him regarding the negotiations."
However, the ex-fiance later announced "There is no such fact in either case."
After getting married, Kei finally met him just before he went to the United States and "agreed to pay a settlement fee" (November 2021), but the source of the money is not disclosed.
In addition, Mako announced at the press conference after marriage that "I let Kei do that to his mother's ex-fiance since 2017."
Also, Kei got a job at a high-end bank in Tokyo (although he quit it soon), entered a national graduate school, studied abroad in New York with a grant (Only one student can get the scholarship at Fordham University, but Kei didn't pass the bar exam though many of his classmates passed), and lived in New York for years.
Western media likes to portray asian society, especially Japanese, as a bad bunch. Look at this video comment section and you can find that the majority of the comments are ignorant of kei komuro's lies and even tries to defend him
@@wenjiang9358 I do not see Japanese 'as a bad bunch', nor have I seen any media imply this!
I am surprised, though, to hear about Kei's family issues.. These are not well known.. On one hand, it's none of our business, since it's personal and can be embarrassing for the Japanese Royal Family! .. On the other hand, there ought to have been some hints in the Western Media..
His failing the law bar exam is disappointing, but I heard it's quite difficult, and not uncommon to fail it, esp on the first try..

it is quite common in Asian countries..guys with long hair often being misjudged

You only have to look at princess mako to see she has kindness running through her veins.
The first thing to keep in mind that differentiates the emperor from foreign kings is that the emperor has authority, but not power. The emperor is attached to a religion with Shintoism at its peak. Is the Pope free to marry? As a result of living freely like the King of Thailand, he has left Thailand and is living in Germany. Does this earn him the trust of the people?
Thai king can do whatever and live where he want
I’m not Japanese but I do know that other royal member of the family have married commoners; one even gave up her royal status to marry a commoner in 2018. It’s kinda odd that some of them are saying this is the first instance of such marriage..
Everybody is getting married to commoners, both princes and princesses. Current empress Masako is a former commoner, so as Michiko, mother of emperor. This title and the whole interview is very misleading. Royal family is small and marriage within the family means incest and everyone has been marrying commoners for long time and it is the only way to marry someone.
@@yasminey4005 Exactly, it seems so odd that such kerfuffle and emphasis is placed on this particular marriage. I am pretty sure we (non-Japanese) are missing something given all the attention.
I can understand why younger people probably haven’t a clue. They’re not really interested in content outside of social media or outside of what is trendy so to them, it’s a first but the older generations have no excuse really. It kinda goes to show how interested people really are in the royals these days. Or any news really. People only tune in when it’s hyped up
When I looked at the foreign media reports on this marriage, I was surprised to see that they reported that the Japanese were against the marriage because he was a commoner.
He was criticized because his mother's money troubles and other problems were reported.
It is normal for members of the Imperial family to marry common people.
The media just want to portray that Japanese people are bad and possessive or having outdated mindset, which is not true at all
True love has no boundaries, exemplified by the love of 2 people, the princess Mako and Kei Komuro. I wish them well and many blessings from heaven above.

"If she leaves you for another, there's always her sister"
~ master oogway
The interviewer seemed to read too much into what backrush she will have to face if she forced
the real reason why their marriage was such a problem for Japanese society.
It's that Kei Komuro's mother is embroiled in scandalous after another with financial dealings
before he even grew up. His mother is thought to have cheated Japanese tax law in inheritance
of her husband's (gloom's dad) suicide and her father's in law's suicide just 3 days earlier and
whence she was able to send her son to a prestigious schools including Int'l Christian University
which would have cost arm and legs for a single mother. Also She was with so called fiance for
quite sometimes and borrowed (gift according to her) $400.000 (4mil yen) to pay for his schooling.
And just in the recent years it became know she was falsifying her health status to receive governmental medical supplemental assistance. The amount may not be as much as some currupt
politicians but you're talking of Japanese imperial household here.
They live on tax payers money so it's imperative they'd be without any gossips whatsoever.
Or it wouldn't be a big deal as this wasn't the first time imperial princess marries out to a commoner.
Empress mother and current empress were commoners for god's sake.
I wish them happiness and congratulations. Arigato, Asian Boss. Interviews like these make your channel tops.

It's like the opposite of a Disney fairytale. Instead of marrying a prince and becoming a princess she marries a commoner and stops being a princess.
Does it even matter who she marries? It's not like women are included in the line of succession. Women might as well be excluded from the family proper from birth.
People LOVE to have a say in women's business, that's why
I was surprised to know so many young people don’t know this marriage isn’t first time for commoners marry royal family members.
in my country, some kings and even crown prince married with commoner. it used to be big news before, but once one person did it, it became kind of not shocking anymore. it still big news but less shock.
and i supported Princess Mako, she should get married to someone that she love and be happy. she have only one life, no need to waste it for political or etc.
It was interesting to hear and see Japanese citizen input. I never knew that there were still royal families. Are they still claiming divine ancestry, is that how it works? I read that the Kojiki, or something, I don't remember the exact name, was an account on who in Japan was to be its righteous Emperor.
Regardless, I thought it weird that, if that's how these families are deemed royal, that you could strip that divinity and title, by marrying non royalty. All in all, I'm very impressed and intrigued by her decision, and it puts a smile on my face.
Love is still out there, and is still a believed concept that carries a lot of meaning. That's what I think about hearing this story, it's mad inspiring.
She's so polite and respectful, madkey graceful, but very steadfast in what she believes in. All the power to her; I really hope that it isn't a detriment to her future, as the media seems to display it.
I don't think that they are still claiming divine ancestry tho because of the "humanity declaration act" post ww2.

@@erikkublack4523 They are criticizing Kei's family, with her mother's debt etc, not to mention they are poor. Although Japan has already progressed past royalty, they still care about the Emperor and his relatives and look up to them as role model. It's a shame that some in the media felt the need to pressure her and criticize her to the point that she felt relieved to be married and moving to the US. People think the lives of royals are easy. For sure they are free from worry about the basics of life but the scrutiny on them is overwhelming. It's not a surprise that Princess Mako and Prince Harry both escaped for lives more common in the US. And its the media and royalists that drove them to that.
"I've heard that he failed the bar exam" Okay, so what?! The good news is that you can take the New York bar exam an unlimited amount of times if you do not pass. New York does not place a limit or a restriction on the number of times you may attempt to pass the bar exam. Weirdly folks in the United States are forgiving unlike folks "elsewhere"...😂

That girl with glasses have no idea about the famous story of how Emperor Naruhito chased after commoner Empress Masako, huh? And how so many in Japan fell in love with Empress Masako, so much that her house was a tourist destination. How Emperor Naruhito defended the then depressed Empress Masako from the meddling imperial household.. how he still protects her until now, by refusing to burden her too much with assignments.
Or how Emperor Akihito defied tradition to marry Empress Michiko, the first empress from a commoner background..
Former princesses Sayako, Ayako and many more had all married commoners. The difference with Komuro Kei is none of them have money scandal surrounding their family.
Japanese men with long hair are players. Got ya! 😂

In conclusion, many Japanese subjects are concered that this marriage could impair the dignity of the Imperial Family.
that has nothing to do with Kei though no? That's on Komuro's mother, not him.

Kei is full of lies. He’s been exposed.
