    If you do not understand SSB after this video, you can't be helped. Everything is presented in this video. it has been presented in depth enough to pass any ham radio test. This is an excellent video on the subject. I think that an understanding of the different modes of transmission is a must for the advanced radio operator. A great effort by our tutor.

    Sehr gut Pete! This video has helped me understand and balanced my DSB kit radio. Your wiring diagram is the same on my kit drawings. Although I don't have a spectrum analyzer, I used a dummy load and multi meter to measure the transmitted voltage down to zero to suppress the carrier. It was very interesting to find that null point. If I turned either way, the voltage started to increase. Signal reports from other Ham's were very good. Big Mahalo, Martin, WH6XY

    Excellent video. Thank you. You should mention that a simple Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO) adds the carrier back again at the receiver end. Years ago I heard shortwave DSB broadcast stations using both sidebands with different programming on each sideband.
    Next we need to suppress the carrier on FM transmissions (and make the power amplifiers linear). Then do the same for CW - OK, that has been done already using Modulated CW (MCW) into an SSB transmitter. I need more sleep (or less dreaming).

    An outstanding presentation. By far the best on you tube (and anywhere else). I guess the main difference between a BM and a mixer (e.g. as used in a superhet radio) is that with the BM, the carrier frequency is still present at the output but much reduced in amplitude compared to the sidebands. With a superhet mixer I think the carrier amplitude is still present at the output at full amplitude together with both sidebands but now at the IF?

    Another great video Peter. Interesting historical note on SSB or should I say the transition to SSB was DSB. Early tube type side band CB radios were really DSB. They transmitted DSB and received SSB. Not that great a system but it worked as a stepping stone as technology advanced.
    Mike

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  9 років тому

      +MikesRadioRepair .CBRadio Hi Mike, well in today's analogue radios the BM is basicly the same idea but it is all in one IC. Additional to that the circuits are active today and not passive like in the past. And off course the phase shift is done with modern semiconductors in the IC and not with a broadband transformer. After that the DSB Signal goes into the DSP for filtering... Thanks for comment I was not aware on the fact that DSB was really sent out in the past. According to my knowledge DSB transmission never happened in Europa on CB. Again thanks for your valuable information! 73

    I really understand how the carrrier is supressed but why cannot the (unwanted) sideband also be suppresed by a similar circuit. (A similar question is why not just use filters to suppress carrier and unwanted sideband. Fantastic presentation thank you so much. No need to answer my question, I will try to work it out myself...

  • @Spoolz07
    @Spoolz07 9 років тому

    Very interesting. However, would the SSB filter you mentioned at the end not also take out the carrier? Do you actually need to build a BM if the filter is capable of removing everything except the 2.7kHz bandwidth surrounding the desired output?

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  9 років тому

      +Spoolz07 The requirement for a filter like this would be much higher and thus it would be much more expensive. Additional to that this would go into the wrong direction as we do not want to have a component in our signal which is consuming power while we want use the advantage of SSB mode on the other hand.

    Great deeply technical video! My question to you is there a good way to use an oscilloscope to evaluate the quality of an SSB modulator vs using an oscilloscope vs a spectrum analyzer as I am experimenting with some modulation techniques that are slightly less standard and wondering if I'm getting anywhere especially quick.

      Hi Wiliam, yes basically it is possible for a transmitter but under real conditions you would use a more advanced circuit as this is not fully developed to work broadband and even carrier reduction could be better. This was an example only but anyway it would work... 73

      Thank you very much as most people already have at least one AM Radio and would save having to purchase a SSB Radio.

      What do you think of these SSB Kits and the FREE Downloads for their earlier versions. They do not list a 10 or 11 Meter version on their site at www.ozqrp.com/index.html.

    Very nice job - thank you. Wish you could have gone into the sideband filter more but very informative just the same.

      Now I've been reading and learning about SSB for the past day (I'm rather obsessive about these things lol). Still can't find an explanation of the filtering used to remove the desired sided band. I know there is a phase shift method and I believe a crystal filter method and I've found plenty of math but no simplified explanations to get me started :( It's all your fault :) lol.

      lol yeah of course :^) Basically it is quit easy you put a band path filter let me say of about 2,7kHz over the wanted area lets say the USB area but not including the reduced fundamental. Now you only have the wanted signal passing trough and the LSB and the rest fundamental will get attenuated.That's it

      TRX Bench Conceptually yes - now I need to learn the methods. You've inspired me to hit the Arrl Handbook section on modulation, demodulation and mixers ;) Thanks again for all the lonnng but interesting and informative videos.

      TRX Bench I think the ideal follow up to this video would be building a crystal ladder SSB filter :) I'm still learning but making progress on this knowledge. 73s

    Another fabulous video! That carrier is way down in the noise. Let's not call that Yeasu an "Old Radio" Compared to it we must be ancient, so let's just call it "somewhat dated". Now let's run through the Hilbert Transform mathematics, and quadrature amplitude modulation equations. We can probably stretch this video out to 4 or 5 hours, eh "old man"!

    Look, I get the math, I do, I see whats going on, but I dont understand in the laws of physics why the upper and lower side bands appear! The appearance of these side bands, are we moving in to the world of harmonics. I haven't got a clue......just yet.
