A couple of things I forgot to say:
I feel my mindset over the last year has sapped a lot of my creativity, both in my riding and video subject matter. My hopes are that a bit more time to be able to think about videos should help me bring back some more creativity.
Secondly I wanted to say thanks to my sponsors, especially Bird and The Ply Guys, I feel I haven’t done their support enough justification as I’ve been less likely to travel to ride these last couple of years, again this is something I hope I can rectify moving forwards :)

As much as I respect your comment I know Ali it’s not that sort of a person who wouldn’t tell us about his personal or private life but realistically he doesn’t have to tell us about his personal or private life. That’s why I respect him and any other youTuber tells the subscribers what’s going on in their personal and private life to a certain extent

I think it shows what a pro he is, that none of us could tell he wasn't enjoying it.
But I'm glad things are getting better for you, Ali. It takes a big person to reflect and seek improvement.
I have chronic pain too, and I think I need to start doing exercises to sort it out!

    Dear Ali,
I know how mental problems can ruin a relationship. It happened to me too (major depression). It's easy to lose yourself, because of all the things you think you have to do. And when you've lost yourself, it's easy to lose your partner too.
I know, it's easier said than done, but please take your time, do the things you like to do, and don't feel pressured to do things you don't want to do.
I'm suffering from bipolar disorder. The last 3 and a half years were tough. And I had a couple of relapses. I'm finally doing better by living a calmer life. It was hard to accept, that I have to do smaller steps, than I did in the past. But that's what improved my situation.
Also I wanted to tell you, that I love your videos. I ve been watching them for years. It's because of you, that I bought myself a street trials bike. Also, I love your unconventional humour! I'm sure, you'll be a great skills coach and I hope, you'll still upload lots of your great videos!
    Cheers from Germany
    Christoph

Dude, I feel the pain in your voice, but also the relief, and a hint of hope. We’ve never actually met, but I’ve been watching your videos for the last 6-7 years and strangely this video has hit me in the feels like I’m sat listening to an old friend. I hope these changes that are happening will lead to a better future for you, keep that chin up. Looking forward continuing watching where you go with things, and whatever the next videos include, regardless of how frequently they come.

Chin up bud. Personally I miss your mtb videos. Living in Glasgow I used to really enjoy your scottish mtb videos. Really looked like you were having a blast, that and I could easily go and ride the same trails. Have you every considered setting up shop and building a community around that? MTB, Trails, sales, repairs, coffee and beers...?

There's a saying along the lines of 'sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to build yourself back up'. I'm 47, I've been in a similar position to you, the unfulfilled time, the relationship collapse, the depression. You seem to be tackling it all head on.
The best piece of advice I can give you, and it is still something I have to remind myself, sometimes you will inevitably feel like you are going backwards, but always remember things are constantly moving, it might feel the same, but it isn't, it's different and how you deal with it can be different too. "You can't stand in the same river twice" is my wee reminder phrase for it.

UA-camrs sometimes seem to be a bit distanced from the reality of a regular person because they can only ever get feedback via the platform. Be grateful and notice that giving - virtually anything - helps feel better the most, for me at least it has worked a long time.

Thanks for sharing with us Ali! It takes a lot to be able to talk candidly like this to anyone, let alone your whole fan base.
Great to hear you're making progress, we'll all still be here watching, your videos are always great.
Coaching sounds like a great addition to your repertoire, hopefully that can help you diversify!
Speaking of coaching, not sure if you'd be up to it or it gets in the way of what you'd coach people in, but an explanation video of the exercises to avoid going down the same neck pain route as you've done might be super helpful for a whole stack of us riders. All this time I suspected maybe you had some underlying injury and just hadn't detailed it out but were working through it, to find out it's most likely caused by a muscle imbalance from riding is good since it should be repairable and that you know the solution makes it an even better outcome. We know you can put in the work and get yourself to where you want to be!

I enjoyed hearing your reflections. I always think it's brave when people allow themselves to be vulnerable and share when they're struggling. It is an unfortunate side effect of all social media that people are given the impression that everyone is leading a perfect life except them. So, I am sure you've helped many people by sharing. I watch you with my partner, and whether you post regularly or not, we will continue to watch. Wow, what a refreshing and humble upload - I feel like I
really needed to see this. As much as I enjoy the biking content on an entertainment level, I could really relate to what was being said here. I have been/still am going through many similar issues myself.
I know I for one enjoy the build content just as much as the riding stuff, if not more! Of course it is nice to see you out and about but I'm sure there are others who would just appreciate the scenery and a maybe bit of commentary. Not necessarily getting involved with a game of 'BIKE' but could maybe supply the commentary on Dunc vs. Ross?!
I'd even enjoy more of this type of update video too!
It certainly sounds like you're on the right track to make some beneficial changes and I really do look forward to any future content, whatever it may be and however frequent/infrequent - only do what's right for you! 👌🏻

Hey Ali Clarkson! Its good to hear you taking actions to try to help the chronic pain. I've had chronic lower back pain for about 25 years and my weight has slowly climbed even though I have tried to keep moving via mountain biking. I figure some of my pain is coming from carrying 40 kg extra around. Ive been successfully dieting for 2 months and am inspired to see it through to victory. Cycling and the endorphins it creates along with positive thinking has helped me the defeat chronic depression that plagued the first 30 years of my life. Don't stop riding and don't stop moving towards positive goals! I hope it helps to know you are helping me and probably some others by sharing your journey. Ride ride ride!

Thank you for the candid update. I've been watching this channel for years and messing around on trials bikes since the 1990s, and the combination of retro bikes (or bikes as we used to call them) and creative riding in terms of style, locations and lines make your videos consistently great viewing. I can't say I ever got the impression that you weren't feeling it while riding in any of the videos either, so I don't think that is likely to have contributed to lower views.
The really frustrating thing about human psychology is that, stupid as it sounds, motivation really only kicks in after you've already made the changes you were hoping to be motivated by, so hopefully you're on a self reinforcing upward trajectory now. Social media is, frustratingly, the most damaging thing to have happened modern society, and we need more people talking honestly about things not being okay to balance out the relentless barrage of fake influencer brainrot.
The most important thing that keeps me watching is that your videos and commentary are still genuine and honest, not the overproduced corporate stuff that the big money riders are forced into in the name of more clicks. Given your riding at times genuinely looks like sorcery that honesty is all the more impressive. All you can do, in fact all any of us can do, is to 'keep on keeping on', to quote the legendary philosopher Joe Dirt 😀.

I hope getting this out in the open helps and take comfort that you’re definitely not alone in facing challenges, but you are doing a great job at making changes to deal with them🙂.
For me, the reason I enjoy your channel is a mixture of your riding and your personality. I couldn’t care less how often you upload-I’d rather you were healthy and happier than uploading like a clockwork (but miserable) machine. Be happy, enjoy your riding and do it for the right reasons! Please don’t feel pressured from us lot to do stuff that is detracting from your happiness🙂.

Glad to hear from you again Ali!
You're an autismo and that has a fair bit to do with the situation you are now in, I've got the certificate too and suffer the stubborness and inability to apply things I know will likely improve things, I find it easy to get stuck and waste days and then beat myself up about it - perhaps you do too. I appreciate that it's been a couple years of steady decline but it's no surprise this peaked in winter, in Scotland of all places, when daylight hours are very short - its a tough time.
I started bouldering and climbing again a while back after six years off the wall due to shoulder issues. Arm pump in the alps is now not even a thing - full runs on the first day - yes bouldering makes your arms sore but it makes you strong!
I told you to coach years ago and you said you didn't think you'd be good or dedicated - I still think you'd be great - you seemed pretty good at fostering Frasiers talent.
Do some longer Sick edits - even if it's reusing footage from streetrides a lot of us have already seen - I love seeing you working a problem but a lot of people just want the money shot and simply haven't got the time for the struggle!
Maybe add in some non bike vids perhaps collaborate with other weirdos that are great at their craft - I remember you sharing some shorts from bouldering years ago and I bet some of the people here would find that inspiring - especially given how much the sport has grown.
    Wow. I waffled.

As you read here, and should know elsewise, you have inspired many of us- my jitsie varial through tartybikes still outrides me- and I wouldn't have it if not for your information and channel (I would have an inspired, but they were out of stock when I ordered 4 years ago). I had some devastation in my own life a few years back when I physically lost offroad motorcycle racing as a hobby and an 18 year relationship with who I thought was the love of my life. I got into road bicycling, trials, and had done some bmx as a kid- so I got a new brakeless bmx to do street with, and am finding that I'm fitter and finding enjoyment in these newer hobbies in my 40s than what I thought was a comfortable paradigm in my early 30s. The aches and pains of age and life lived go on, but recuperative therapies like yoga and exercise help and grow strength over time.
One of the things I always liked about your channel is your honest, real, and relatable approach. When I was a skateboarder, rodney mullen was my guy over tony hawk. My knees, low back, and hips can't do a lot of what they could 20 or 30 years ago, even if my mind and muscles want to. I'm glad you helped remind me how easy it is to ride a bike. =)

You making this video is really valuable. A lot of the value of UA-cam, in my opinion, is giving people a glimpse behind the curtain into what it takes to do a thing, such as the work to pull off a challenging line, instead of just slick edits of the successful attempts. Giving a further glimpse behind the curtain to the impact of doing physical endeavours without balance of activities, and from doing your hobby as a job is also valuable for people to appreciate their hobbies for what they are. Lots of people watch content like yours thinking that skilled people are something totally different from themselves because it's easier to believe that than to realise that it's mostly the result of hard work which they could probably also do. Seeing that you're a normal person who also skips some of the work (meaning your exercises for your neck) but are now holding yourself accountable for it for your own benefit as it's no one else's responsibility, that might be the kick up the arse that others need to do little things which somewhat improve their lives. Gaun yersel, lad.

Hey Ali, it's been a while since I've written a comment. But just wanted to let you know that as long as you're enjoying what you do, you're doing the right thing. Obviously it's hard to keep the fun in things if there is the pressure of making a living off of riding bikes and uploading that to YT weekly. So maybe trying to do more random stuff, pointing cameras at stuff you're doing anyways (gym, bouldering, random vacation vlogs) and just finding joy in the things you do will make the content be more interesting and easy to pull of to YOU. The views will follow after.
Hope the very best for you mate. You've made my days better for years so I hope my words can brighten yours up a little as well. Anyways, stay positive mate the attitude you've got going on is the way to make things better! :)

Ali, just a quick man to man- stay stubborn but accept help. There's a big difference between being a weight on others and accepting that others want to be there for you. You may struggle with accepting help as if it's demeaning or it makes you weak but in reality those who want to help are the same people that want to see you get stronger. Coming from a fellow stubborn bastard

So being in your own world can damage anything and anyone. To think outside the box or listen to others. ..stay strong and stay creative. Hopefully everything works out for you and it’s a lesson learned.

Hey Ali, after watching your videos for nearly a decade at this point i thought i might leave a comment on this - I know/can imagine that being this open about mental stuff towards such a wide audience is certainly not an easy thing to do. I only got back to actively watching you sometime in 2022, since I dealt with depression and alcoholism from 2018 until that point. Despite everything going on in your life your videos were always a nice comfortable experience, often motivating me to pick up the old bike again myself - thank you for that. What i am trying to say right here is that as bad as things might seem right now, things will get so much better if you just keep on going and following your heart. For me personally the end of my long-term relationship and the doctor telling me that she is very worried about my drinking habits (a result of my depression at the time) were just the wake-up calls I needed to finally start living and enjoying life again after living in such a self-destructive, almost joy-denying manner for such a long time. Since then I've simply been following old passions again, connected with new (and old) people more and I have also been working on myself a lot - physically and mentally. All I've got to say is that life now is for me is better than it's ever been and as painful as all the experiences were at the time, they put me in the place I am in now and make me appreciate everything so much more than I otherwise would have done. I'm sure you'll find your way to make things work with riding as a job and I hope you'll take us along for the ride, it would be a quite the loss if you stopped doing your refreshingly different riding videos (I might not speak for everyone ofc, but your videos resonate with me a lot more than those of the 'wilder' creators nowadays). Anyways, all the best to you Ali and I hope to keep seeing more good stuff from you in the future. Take the steps carefully and one at a time, but take them!

I kind of relate to where your coming from Ali, I find it very hard to see others around me who have so much more get up and go attitude towards life when 5 out of 7 days I can hardly bring myself to do anything, don’t really have a social life anymore for a good 10 years now. Always feel tired & grumpy, then get angered towards myself because of feeling this way and having no motivation for anything.. plus when normal everyday life stuff gets in the way it can cause me to relapse in a sense. I think you should go down the route of coaching the next up and coming trials riders, it’s a good way for you to stay involved within the sport but less stress for your pain. You can still record it for UA-cam etc and also helping the younger generation will make you feel like your given back to the community that helped moulded you..

I'm sure you'll approach your recovery with the same stubborn tenacity you display when trying to ride a difficult line. Don't apologize or assume you don't deserve sympathy. I am sorry to hear of your struggles, particularly the medical challenges with street trials riding. I am significantly older (and grumpier) than you and have had a similar medical problem. I am no trials rider but love to incorporate small trials moves into my mountain bike riding. In my case mountain biking bunny hops, drops and ledge ‘lifts’ on climbs all injured my shoulders (but not my traps!) by the pulling motion that heavily engaged my shoulders. Gym work also contributed to the shoulder injuries. I was treated for three tears in my left shoulder last summer. After a long rehab I am working on trying to use my shoulders less and core more as well as a different positioning on the bike (starting further forward) and different foot work on the pedals. I am basically trying to learn different techniques for all the trials-type moves in mountain biking that take away the strain on the shoulders. I would love to hear more details on how you are working to mitigate your trap use (maybe there’s a video in this😊) - it must surely be similar to mitigating shoulder use.

It doesn’t play on my mind. Because I know her job is mentally draining but the next incident could be one too many.
