  • Repentance is not simply fear of punishment but godly sorrow over what we have done. From Ligonier’s 2016 National Conference, R.C. Sproul considers the nature of genuine repentance.

This time with Dr. Sproul utterly broke my heart-seeing his physical distress, pondering his humility before God and a lifetime of devotion to Him and then personally, his wonderful ability to help me encounter God’s Word and His Presence without being consumed by the guilt I have apart from my Lord Jesus.

Apostle Paul says if we believe that Jesus died & rose again, which I do. Paul said I am crucified with Christ to show the importance of our life. He also said those things which are behind me I forget, & press toward the mark set before me. I don't know what (really remorse is), might be different for each of us. Paul also told the jailor belief in the Lord Jesus Christ & you will be saved. Jesus nailed the law to his cross that was against us. He preaches the cross for the power of God. I did fear Hellfire; I also knew I was lost by my lifestyle which I no longer live. but really remorse???? I will never understand the steps; if any difference from the thief on the cross. All I know I was lost & now I'm found.

Dr. R.C. Sproul once taught on the awesome holiness of God and His sovereignty. My life was changed. When we realize just how guilty we are and His great condescension we will feel a godly sorrow. He's right that our sin is against a righteous God, but we also hurt other people as well deeply and even if it's not required it helps for the sake of unity and to help heal broken hearts to as least say I'm sorry you were hurt. If not it's like what was done was no "biggie." I repent with godly sorrow and I feel better when we talk it out.. Today they are trying to tell Black people that there's no racism in America when young men of color are being gunned down on a daily basis. Our voting rights are being restricted and even the right to march in protests like MLK, Jr taught us to do, people are trying to pass laws so they can I believe control protests, not riots. Yet, the White churches are talking about the rapture. They are not acting like Jesus, and speaking up for the oppressed. Not a word..the Lord is very much concerned with racism in the body of Christ. We pray and talk to Him about it often because, He's our God too! Glory!

Repentance is not an "apology", it is owning what you've done. It is seeing your sin as God sees it, agreeing with His scripture on it, and grieving your having violated that scripture.
When confronted by Samuel, King Saul was (merely) "sorry"
When confronted by Nathan, King David was repentant.
THAT, is the difference. And, makes all the difference!

      @@vmilliie you're welcome.
"Apologies" or just saying you're "sorry" usually follows with shifting blame in an attempt to avoid repentance.
Didn't Saul blame Samuel's tardiness for his reason for sinning (1 Sam. 13:11)?
1 Samuel 15:24, 30. If you look at his "repentance" it is merely to get back into Samuel's (and henceforth God's) graces, and not be disgraced in the eyes of the people.
It was all a show. It wasn't genuine.
David, on the other hand in Psalm 51:4 tells God "against You, and You alone, have I sinned and done this evil in Your sight..." surely his sin hadn't ONLY affected God alone, but his sin was firstly and foremost against God. Unlike Saul, David did not ask Nathan "pray for me", but went directly before God himself. He knew God!!

    James 5:16 ESV
[16] Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
I ask the righteous out there to pray for me to be healed. I have suffered long and hard for 37 years with a spinal cord injury. The older I get the more painful my life has become. I received the Holy Spirit nearly 40 years ago but this long trial of my faith wears heavy on me. Apostle John writes that whatever is not of faith is sin. Lack of faith at times is the sin that I confess.

    The Lord Jesus said:
    - I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.
    - But unless you repent you too will perish.
    - Go now and leave your life of sin.
    - Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.
Repentance is not a one time thing.
Repentance is a wondrous journey with the Holy Spirit to turning away from sin, humbling before God, living in the Mercy and Grace of The Lord Jesus, walking on the narrow path of righteousness glorifying The Lord Jesus moment by moment. Repentance is also rejoicing that your name is written in heaven thanking The Merciful and Faithful High Priest who died for us to atone for our sins. You continue to repent and believe The Good News and produce fruit in keeping with repentance and demonstrate your repentance by your deeds.

Undermines the righteousness of faith, the central pillar of “the faith” which is the central tenet of “the gospel“ - all based on an erroneous interpretation of one loan scripture - 1Jn. 1:9 for which the Westminster’s’ created the doctrine of familial/ parental forgiveness. The Father removed his countenance from Jesus on the cross when Jesus became our sin and cried “my God, my God why has thou forsaken me? - and therefore God will not punish us for/with what he already punished Jesus for/ with - because God is Holy. The apostle Paul wrote 2/3 of the New Testament and never mentions the need for confession to be forgiven or to be cleaned from unrighteousness. Godly sorrow and confession yes but not to be forgiven -because we are forgiven and possess eternal righteousness through Christ and his finished work.

I would say that you must consider the literal definition of confession, which is to admit or acknowledge a thing. Without confessing sin, in it's definitive context, a person cannot repent of their sins because there has been no formal acknowledgment of their sin within their own heart. You cannot turn away from a thing you refuse to admit is there. I think that's what this video is getting it. Repentance and confession go hand in hand, for where a Christian recognizes sin, they will repent of it. It doesn't undermine the righteousness of faith, it merely suggests the biblical principle of forsaking your sin by the power of the Holy Spirit in you as a regenerated child of God, and that is not possible unless a person admits/confesses their sin before God

    • @ljjdcm

@@ronkelley1490 I said “godly sorrow and confession yes but not To be forgiven”. God put a his Law in our hearts and minds and when we sin our conscious condemns us but we have something greater than our conscience -the Holy Spirit who convicts us of righteousness - that’s called repentance (metanoia - change of mind) towards God. Confess because you have been forgiven.

Pistis in Greek, placing our faith in Him is spoken of throughout the New Testament. I certainly accept Paul but he's writing to converts not unbelievers, and Jesus trump's Paul and speaks to the spiritually dead. Paul does speak over and over of having been dead often and the conversion that took place, agreeing with God about our former lifestyles.
No intellectually claiming to have faith is a lie. The realization that Jesus is Savior is impossible without realizing I need a Savior due to the endless repetitive terminal condition I am in due to my sin.
When God comes upon someone, the first job of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of sin. At the cross we Agree with YHVH God admitting we are helpless and hopeless and Christ sacrifice in our place is our only hope. To place ones faith and hope in Christ is immediately subsequent to internally agreeing, or confessing we are a totally bad, depraved person without a righteousness or integrity apart from God at all.
I don't believe it's confessing specific sins but our sinful state.
He came for sinners, not the righteous.
Unless you believe that I am He you will die in your sins.
Can't have one without the other. Essential.

@@ljjdcm I agree with the entirety of that statement except, by Biblical context, confession and repentance precedes forgiveness. I understand what you mean about we continue to repent because we are forgiven and the Holy Spirit convicts us, but in each case where sin is revealed to us in some area of our lives, that confession and repentance must precede the forgiveness of God given to us in that scenario.

Ultimately, it is Christ Jesus that searches the heart and intent.
As in Revelation chapter 2:22-23, the teacher of antinomianism, as well as the followers of antinomianism, ... together go into great tribulation and death.
In the end, we are rewarded according to our works. The Lord gave to each of His servants a talent; 2 thirds were profitable..., but the one unprofitable servant, was cast into outer darkness.

I have come to believe this idea of confession before God and not man is wrong! Not that man can ultimately forgive sin, but that man is God's representative on earth. There is not one place for a private confession in the bible! I believe we resist confession because we don't want our sins known! This has given me great distress in my life. I came from a family that confessed nothing, and therefore you talk about nothing! It kills the inquisitive mind! When I became a Christian I never heard of confessing sin and was made to believe it was something Catholics did, and they were all wrong. I see that their confession is not perfect, because it is private! But that is far better than no confession at all! There is confession in the bible and it is all public! When you think about it it makes sense! You are condemning yourself for the sin you committed, that is repentance!
