  • Many Diesel Engines are bolted to an Allison Transmission for reliable automatic shifting and doing proper services to the transmission is a great way to make sure the transmission runs without too many problems. This video goes into detail about how to properly drain, refill, and change the filters on the 3000 and 4000 series of Allison transmissions with 2" and 4" sumps. Donations to the channel can be made to AdeptApe@yahoo.com on Paypal.

    I had to pull an Allison out of a kenworth this week. What a nightmare getting at a few of the bell housing bolts was. I will never again complain about a standard transmission. I particularly had a hard time with the bolts on the left and right side near the unused mount plates. I took the liberty of grinding off the material that was making it difficult to remove. My swivel socket will fit nicely with an impact gun now.

    I’ve done the Allison level check on fire engines and it freaked out my officer. When you got to raise the cab on a fire truck with a ladder it takes a lot of time to secure all the gear, pull it onto the pad outside, set the outriggers raise the ladder then cab... talk about a pain. Work smarter!

    Hey Adept, love your videos! They have been super helpful to me since purchasing a 2003 Thomas Saf T Liner ER school bus that I'm converting into a RV.
    I have some questions in regarding this video and my bus. I took my bus for a drive the other day and noticed it shifting hard from 1st to second and second to third. So when I got home I checked the transmission district and the trans fluid was WAY over the Hot max fill line. Being worried that my transmission was overfill I drained the entire thing and not knowing how much it needed. I went on UA-cam and found this video. I have a MD3060 6 speed automatic push button trans and a 3126E Cat engine with a 4" sump. When I drained the trans I drained about 4.5 gallons. I then put in new filters put the plug back in and starting filling it up again. I put in 4 gallons of trans fluid in and checked it. The reading on the dipstick was about a half inch above the Hot max level. I know you said 19 quarts 4.75 gal for a 4" sump. I got 4 gallons in there now why is my fluid level higher than it should be? The dip stick appears to be the right one for the transmission. It looks to be the proper length compared to the tube when laid beside it. Should I put in the other 3 quarts fir the 19 total? Or should I not since the stick is showing it over filled? Your expert thoughts on this would be much appreciated! Thanks!

    well done video . I've seen people use air ratchets on the filter bolts and strip them just from spinning them to fast . when you do the only fix is to drop the sump and valve body , bolt on a guide and drill and helicoil the holes . needless to say only specialty shops have the guide (expensive).
    I work on class 7 trash trucks and there is always some youngster who thinks he can do it faster .
    it's a pain in the butt but I always run them up by hand , but when you service them twice a year it kinda makes sense to be a little extra cautious .
    I use white grease to hold the gasket in place

    Thanks for an awesome channel, i have Been a mechanic for 25 years but never specializing in diesels. A few years back I have purchased an used 2003 RV on a f650 chassis with a 3126 and Alison gearbox. Your channel has helped me on several occasions With just info that I needed to learn how to work on it and keep this ol girl on the road. I have used this video to see if I could check the oil level. It seems that this is an older single digit display that when I press the upshift and downshift arrows at the same time to check oil level all I get is a “d” “-“ “1” flashing I can’t seem to find any info on the internet can you shed any light on this? Thanks and keep up the good work!!

    I really enjoy your videos on Diesels. I just bought a 02 Dutch Star with Cat 330 HP with Allison trans. I asked the dealer to have the trans serviced , and they took it to Freightliner in Chandler Arizona. They charged me $675.oo for a service on the Trans.
    When i got the coach home i looked at the transmission and the filter bolts had not been removed. I called Freightliner and they said another filter was changed on the transmission, are there other ones ??
    I am only aware of the two that you show in the video...
    Are they taking me for a ride .
    The coach has 117000 on it , so i wanted to make sure the trans was serviced.
    Thanks for all the great Videos , i watch all of them... !!!

    Great video, but the thing missing is "What kind of transmission fluid do I add" - I'm pretty sure somewhere I read it has to be the "Transync" (or some kind of synthetic fluid) versus regular Dexron type? I can't find my manual right now, but I don't want to add the wrong fluid. Do you know what I'm talking about?

    Approximately how much would a service on an Allison transmission like this cost(ball park). I have a 39' 2003 Newmar Dutchstar Diesel pusher with a Cat 3126 and Allison(I believe it's a 3000 series) on a freight liner XC chassis with 48000 miles. I really appreciate you taking the time to post these videos and share your knowledge. I only wish I lived near your shop so I could get you to work on it when needed. Thanks!

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 років тому +2

      +richard leitner A transmission service by itself would be about 2-3 hours, if done with an engine service they would probably just charge 2 hours for the transmission service. The fluid is pretty expensive at about $200 for the 5 gallon bucket of transyn and the filters are about 40 dollars. So you are looking at the $500-$600 dollar range for a service at a shop like ours. You can do it yourself for a lot less of course, but it is a messy job.

    I have a 2005 475 Accert that will not run up to proper temperature since the cold weather has set it. Runs at 160° driving and will climb to 175° when parked until it starts to cool down at idle. Oil temp only runs up to 120°.
    My fuel mileage has dropped significantly.
    In warmer weather the temps run closer to where they should be.
    I have installed 185° thermostats, replaced the fan hub and tried a winter front with no change.
    fan runs good, I even replace oil cooler bypass valve, I thought something happened with,
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 років тому

      +Shalva Kipshidze Hey sure we can try to figure this out. So basic things first, are you sure the temp sensor is reading right? Usually there is a dash mounted gauge, but the ECM also pulls from its own sensor. You should compare to the two and see if they are reading right. You already replaced the thermostats and that is the usually cause, so we can guess that isn't the problem. Check those sensors first.

      +Gregory A. Parsons Those are Donaldson's actually, OEM is usually best though we have to use what we have at the shop.

      Gregory A. Parsons we run Baldwin in garbage trucks with no issues I would prefer Donaldson if not OEM though

      Walker Vaillancourt Donaldson & Wix are made in the same joint venture plant. Money says they’re producing Detroit’s OE filters. Only so many manufacturers would be willing to build a specialized wire-backed synthetic media filter.

    Had a nightmare with those filter bolts stripping. Had over 3. Someone must have tightened those up with a 3/4 impact lol

      +hddm3 That would totally ruin your day. I've had the drain plugs break in half trying to remove them, but never the bolts.

      you can strip them with a healthy 3/8 air ratchet

      Allison recommends the you only use hand tools to tighten the filter cover bolts and then torque them of course. The bolts thread into the main case of the transmission. If the holes get stripped you have drop the sump, which is actually the control body of the transmission and Kent Moore makes a tool kit to drill out the holes and install a threaded insert into the hole.

      the cheap skates at Allison need to just cast the case with steel inserts

      Cbmech they do now and any rebuilt tranny that came from a really good remanufacture will also make that repair if it's an old style threaded aluminum hole
