She got railroaded. Politicians should have been in prison.
ABSOLUTELY! That is what my late mother said. She was a scapegoat to take the eyes away form DUM politicians. PERIOD.
they made an example of her :(
James Comey seems to have it out for tough, successful women -- as in his needless reopening of Hillary Clinton's email investigation.
@@williampiel5030point taken, but two wrongs dont make a right.
I'd say either she really rubbed someone (or even a group of ppl) the wrong way, and they "witch hunted" her. and/or she was made an example of insomuch the message from the DOJ/govt "Doesnt matter how much $$$ you have, you are still culpable if you are involving yourself with crime. Elites arent immune."
L. Helmsley was prob in same boat with this too, but she got a harsher sentence.
Martha also jumped into her sentence rather than spend tons of money on pointless appeals. She was in and out of prison quickly so she could get back to her business. I admired her for that style of handling the problem. Her broker walked her down the garden path by telling her to sell her stock. He was the professional in stock handling and knew better. As an attorney I guide my clients on how to conduct themselves properly so they don't get into trouble!
Yes but as you know AI is incredibly popular and does show the average level of intelect is quite lower than AI - which can never replace real intelect and proper moral values. As you recomend. You can never go wrong doing the right thing. I an attorney too and I try to guid my clients in. ways that are honourable and have integrity. But sadly doing the right thing aint always the easy thing. kind regards from Australia.
It was only 50k or something and she had millions on the line.
Thanks for this comment.
I was puzzled about this, I thought a stock broker would not put their client in that position.
I wonder if he was overwhelmed by her fame and got carried away trying to help her not lose money on a stock that was going down, and he stepped over the line.
Just compare her with Pelosi who is making millions out of selling stocks based on insider information. I surely admire integrity and competence of Martha. Her designs made my house more beautuful at the very modest price.
@@jagodaszubert2404 I agree. Didn't get the "career ending" part. She's still in the public spotlight and I got the impression she was doing ok.

What's the difference between not being malicious and not having malice out of pure curiosity?
Malicious or not she is still a criminal. Still worth today $400 million. she should pay restitution for all that lost because of her criminality.

A True , Truth.
Martha was highly respected in prison by the guards and other inmates. she got right in there and cleaned toilets and flors with the best of them. I live in WV and know people who worked at the prison during her stay. Believe it or not. She was liked and respected
So you respect a person that goes to prison and cleans a toilet? Your self esteem must be a very low bar
@@Chris-i4gChill. I don't think she's saying she respects Martha. She's only saying Martha was well respected by the people in prison.

I have the same admiration for Martha Stewart that Dr Grande has and resent that she went to prison when others guilty of far worse insider trading whose salary over many decades nowhere near matches the fortunes they have made. She is a resourceful, strong woman who made a success of her business through sheer hard work, guts and creativity.

how many times has this crime been committed in history-white WOMAN goes down for it...
I agree. She's amazing! I love the things she said, some very good quotes. I love her directness and I understand the impatience with ineptness and stupidity. As we watched the documentary, my partner kept saying, "Oh my God! You're just like her!" Ha ha, Not true. I am not rich.
I’m impressed by Martha Stewart her persistence has revealed a character that is endearing and authentic she is who she is!
I think it's pretty amazing that Martha survived prison. She was guilty of a crime did her time, debt paid and she moved forward instead of spiraling down, respect.
Came here to say that.

Found guilty of lying about a crime she didn’t commit. Ok. Government had to save face. She wrote about her time in jail and turned it into a positive….she walked out wearing a sweater made by a fellow inmate. Martha is awesome.
She would wreck her life for $45,000?! I don't think so... silly.
@@mf5985 Uh, no. That was the government who did that - or rather tried to. She's living very happily in her retirement now.
They love getting people on "lying" to them in crimes that potentially did noy even happen.
Purjury trap.
She’s still got a good life but they stole her empire from her. Disgusting government.
Martha lied about a stop-loss order to sell the stock when it went below a certain amount admitted to a friend in Mexico saying "isn't it nice to have brokers who tell you these things." It's a slim amount of evidence but it shows she wasn't completely innocent.
I’m an attorney. When Martha was convicted she appealed but she also arranged her prison time so she could be out to plant her garden in the spring. I’ve seen a lot of people cry and complain. Martha just said, I don’t think this is right but let’s get this over with and move on. I can respect that.
Her career never ended though. She's still thriving.
Well... It was revived. It did end/die for a long moment.

Did any of the MEN who dumped their stock get indicted? Probably not.
LOL. I used to not like her because I found her snooty and mean spirited. But I have really changed my mind on her. Good for her for making it through that prison sentence and bouncing back. Go Martha!
Good question
Being raised in new jersey!!!😂
Ya, a feminist would say that. How to be a criminal and get away with it. Both are still worth millions. Paula Deen 16 mil, Stewert 400 mil. A corporate strategy, build cooperation, commit crimes, make big profits, get caught, pay fines and or go to jail, and come out still a millionaire on ill-gotten gains.

I agree!
I watched the Netflix documentary on Martha Stewart last night. It was not a 'sugar and spice' story about a hard-working, wealthy woman who once went to prison. The documentary seems almost a raw and very personal story, one I doubt we would see today had Martha not been made a scapegoat and served 5 months in prison. It is almost difficult to watch in some segments, but I can identify with a number of her personal emotional experiences---they are of a woman. The one really important message I think, in addition to being a survivor of her trials and tribulations both personal and business, is that Martha Stewart was the first, original "influencer." That's an amazing observation to me. ....and somewhat ironic when considering the uneducated, untalented woke freaks that some consider influencers today. Martha Stewart is now age 83; the story of her life is like no other. She was the first self-made female billionaire in modern history. At age 73, I still admire her for an incredible body of work and her courage.
Beautifully said and completely on point. I agree that her experience is that of a woman. As a 43 year old who was coming of age at the height of her popularity and “downfall,” she has always been a trailblazing, role model in my eyes and certifiable badass! The original HBIC!
I agree
Wow... amazing victim story for a billionaire. Are you kidding?
Martha Stewart changed entertaining, cooking, gardening, fine living so those habits made life so much better. I was a magazine subscriber for years, they contain everything.
sad she took a foray into insider trades
I was a subscriber for years! I loved her magazines, books and shows! I learned so much. I’m still a huge fan of hers!
Thank you Dr Grande for reviewing this case. I think Martha was unjustly punished.
I too found it amazing that so much chaos was wrought over this "crime". You were right that her business was destroyed but a business is people and many lost their jobs. The cost to innocents was too high and I do not believe Martha should shoulder that burden. This was not just.
Say what you want about her, but her recipes can’t be beat. I recently won first place in a pie baking contest using one of her apple pie recipes. I adapted it by adding pears and a handful of chopped pecans, but the basic construction was hers. Thanks, Martha!
But the secret (amended) was yours 😉🥇

Also makes no sense that a billionaire would be concerned about $45,000. Why would she risk it? She was railroaded.
Exactly and she use to be a stockbroker. I think her stockbroker may have known but just told her it was dropping and she said sell it… but the assistant guy said something different so idk oh and her friend

10:02 It's sickening how society views "strict and demanding" women vs "strict and demanding" men. Men are praised for it; they're called leaders, determined, tenacious, strong-minded and hardworking. But women are demeaned for it; we're called bossy, rude, mean, unpleasant, and pushy. Any man who would have accomplished only a fourth of what Martha Stewart accomplished in her life would have been wildly praised and celebrated. But because Martha is a woman, she is criticized for it, and then wrongly imprisoned. Sounds like there were several men intimidated by her and they were hellbent on "putting her in her place"

Nobody is perfect and I still like Martha. I've tried many of her recipes and I loved them. I've read that during her stay in prison she offered tips on how to make the food taste better and that she had competitions where the inmates would decorate their cells, she would pick the winner and give a little prize. After she left jail she was interviewed and showed a poncho an inmate had made her as a gift. Martha Stewart is awesome!
I don't think I would get long with her, but I can still respect her. my mother was a perfectionist, and that is an incredibly difficult person to live and associate with. However, it meant that she could produce some fantastic work (as a seamstress, cook, musician and a laboratory technician). Very worthy of respect and awe, but hard on relationships.

interesting video, but a couple corrections i would add. when i was a trainee at the FBI academy at quantico we had someone come in and speak to us about the type of crime and this case in particular, he was one of the special agents involved. i thought it was real hokey to hear something about the lady my mom was always following but it ended up being fascinating. long story short - - don't lie to the feds....they already know the answer.
edit: this was around the time after the surge, 08-09ish. martha's scandal was far from top of mind, but it was VERY useful nonetheless. this was before we ramped up in afghanistan under obama in '10. salafi jihadist terrorism was a big point of focus, we hadn't gotten bin laden yet so (domestic) terrorism was still something on everyone's mind. lots of unknowns. I remember the lecture being a breath of fresh air. my background was geared more towards the middle east / north africa (MENA) but it was cool to learn the whole story of this lady getting a number in the fed system

Not related to this video specifically, but I’ve noticed a pattern in recent videos where the portrayal of women seems overly critical... I’ve been a follower of your content for years, and I’ve enjoyed watching your videos and the insights you bring. However, I’ve noticed a shift in recent videos, and I wanted to share some thoughts. It seems to me that there’s a pattern of being somewhat critical of women, especially in cases involving violence or serious crimes. In particular, there are moments where it feels as though the actions or behaviours of the women involved are scrutinised more heavily, which can come across as empathetic toward the perpetrators rather than the victims. I’m mentioning this to encourage reflection on how women’s roles and experiences are discussed in these cases. As a long-time viewer, I just wanted to share how this change has impacted my experience with your content.
Dr. Todd is looking for UA-cam mainly male audience clicks. He's catering to the fascination with divas and witches.

I believe Martha Stewart is a net positive for society. It would be a good thing to have more people like her.
Btw love your jab at New Jersey but I'm 71 and grew up in Jersey City and I can truly say I would not trade my Jersey City experience for anything. It was a wonderland for kids and sometimes pretty dangerous. My life was filled with railroads, rooftops, cellars and the Hudson River. Every neighborhood, Polish ,Irish, Italian had its own church.
I lived in an Irish neighborhood downtown and had an astounding number of friends.
I go there now to Hamilton Park and I'm amazed how it's retained it's beauty.
The brownstone we owned now goes for 2 million dollars.
I had a childhood others can only dream about.
Back in the 90's, we had a local Kmart. Martha was doing surprise "pop-ins" around the country in her private jet to see how her displays looked. Well, apparently she was NOT happy when she saw it lol. She threw around the dishes , towels & linens etc. and was having a bit of a meltdown, saying: "this is not right! this is not how it's supposed to look!" That story even made the local papers lol. Again, its ok to be a perfectionist...but I don't know if scolding ppl making $3.35 an hour was the best way to go 😬.
I worked in New Product Planning for a number of the Top American pharmaceutical companies. Any time we released “bad” information to the public, we’d all sell our company stock the day before the announcement. We’d purchase stock the day before the company released good information about the company. And we shared our plans to buy or sell with all our friends. None of us went to jail.
This used be called common sense, connections, good neighbor whatever.
This law is inexplicable.
I root for Martha.
That’s called insider information and therefore insider trading. Its illegal.
