I don't know about a PR stunt. But the man almost killed himself many times for his death defying jumps. We all rooted for his success, never wanting to see him injured doing so. As a kid growing up in the 70's, he was a great showman and a hero to us all. We all wanted to be just like him when jumping our Schwinns over the curbs on my street. Heck, my friend use to wear a white cape!
    Thank you Evil.

I grew up in that same time period, but I never thought of him as a hero. I thought he was a bonified idiot. I intentionally refused to watch because I didnt want to promote or be a willing partisipant to someone foolishly putting their life at risk. To watch, just serves to egg some people on. They value being famous over their own life. Just pure vanity and stupidity if you ask me.

This is one of my favorite memories, I was 6 years old and was there with my family and cousins watching it. My dad took us up to the chain link, it felt like we were almost to the edge of the canyon. We were able to go right up by the launcher. I was a HUGE fan. He pulled the chute. I feel certain that he began by truly believing he could do it, but realized during the project and promised date of the stunt, that it simply couldn't succeed. It wasn't possible to live through and he knew it. Wylie E Coyote had better ideas than this one. He'd made his name, legend and fame by risking it all, and suffering unspeakable injuries and crashes.. He now had WAY too much to live for, he'd proven his point, and he didn't owe anybody his life.
I didn't go, or watch it closed circuit. I saw this one coming.
It never changed my opinion. He was a true legend and always will be synonymous with bravery, and an icon of high profile, daredevil stunts. RIP Bobby "Evel" Knievel.

He could have made it. My wife's grandma had a house on the outskirts of Twin Falls & the day before the event, she witnessed Kneivel & his team attempt a test jump over Rock Creek Canyon within eyesight of her home. It wasn't nearly the expanse of the Snake River Canyon but wide enough to satisfy the requirements.
She was the only person who witnessed it & to her final days, she insisted that her story was true.

No way. It wasn't in his make-up to do something like that. The chute ejected prematurely. It was more dangerous to pull the shoot too soon; he almost ended up drowning in the river!

    • @bana2s
      @bana2s 2 роки тому +5

The chutes were on a “dead-man’s” switch, a spring-loaded handle he had to hold back. All he had to do was let go and the chutes ejected. My guess - and it is only a guess - is that when the engines ignited, he either lost his grip on the handle or momentarily blacked out. The switch was designed for in case of a blackout, after all.

There's a camera shot of him in the sky cycle before liftoff and he reaches out to put his hand on the handle of the chute release mechanism. He probably didn't expect the thrust he would experience at liftoff and the force pushed his body (including the hand holding the handle) back in the seat and he 'accidentally' pulled the chute. Hindsight being 20/20; had he attempted the jump a second time (knowing the thrust he would experience) I have no doubt he would have been successful. The man was a badass. The negative press he received in his later years were from the rage his years of injuries and concussion produced he could no longer control. For those who understand the trauma of brain injuries - Evel Knievel will ALWAYS be an American Hero.

This is CRAP! I saw this as a kid. #1. The chute didn't "prematurely open". Knievel couldn't handle the G's, lost consciousness & let go of the dead man trigger and the chute deployed as designed. #2. It didn't go to the bottom of the canyon at all. The chute snagged on the rock wall of the side of the canyon & hung there 'til rescued. Someone is playing with our history.

Did he pull the chute? Maybe. Does a guy who nearly died so many times have a good radar for when something is TOO dangerous? Almost certainly. Even if he did pull it, respect for making a judgment call and getting to live a full life.

I don't know who there are, but the family at 35 seconds is NOT Evel's family (the woman looks a little like Linda, but the kids are definitely not Kelly, Robbie, and Tracey.)

You have to use the word “jump” loosely here. It was more like a ride on a rocket ship.

I had an evil knievel lunchbox as a kid, I got in big trouble when 3 older kids tried to take it from me .
Guess what ? They didn’t bother me again .

Nope. Evel had to keep the lever pushed down. The sheer g forces made him let up on it. He actually made it to the other side but got blown back with the chute.

why did the steam rocket cut out after a few seconds ?, it never had the power to clear the canyon .. total fraud
he should have never done this jump , he should have stuck to the bike jumps which he was talented at and brave. why sit in some stupid rocket that he had no control over ..

"Knievel had just survived; but almost immediately there were serious doubts about what really happened. After all the hype and promotion, there was a suspicion that Knievel had pulled the emergency chute on purpose -- that the whole event was one big P.R. stunt."
Well, yeah. I mean, he didn't do this merely because he wanted to get to the other side of the canyon! ....I think they have a bridge across it somewhere.

He did complete a lot but he also crashed a lot. The point is he did what nobody else dared doing at the time. He inspired a nation and never quit. He always got back up and tried again.
