@@danielsmokesmids The comedy comes from Hank Hill struggling to adjust to a changing world while maintaining his sense of self and the scene that best encapsulates what kind of person he is, is a flashback to them hanging out in high school with Hank basically saying that when he grows up, he wants to sell propane and propane accessories. The characters all have arcs without losing who they are, which is why it should be required viewing for comedy writers. I mean, that and that it's genuinely funny.

So these guys are anti what they call "DEI" because 'they want talent to be hired based on their merit'. But they love casting their friends to play roles in everything they create, despite said friends having no talent nor experience in acting. Okayyy
Yep, Conservatives love DEI. It was the same shit with that forgettable actress from Star Wars. She wasn't particularly talented or even noteworthy to look at, but because she said "WOKE BAD" you had conservatives foaming at the mouth to hire her over far more qualified actresses.
As much as they complain about minorities existing in media, they don't even have the balls to have an exclusively white, male cast... There are women in the show that even... do things... and have jobs of their own.... His wife is a real-estate agent who probably makes a hell of a lot more money than a wood-shop teacher (which is a no-no!) And his daughter wants to cut wood too! (Isn't that a man's job? Shouldn't her dream job be a wife and mother? ) I don't know.... this show is looking pretty woke....
Yeah Birchum’s main group is a feeble attempt at virtue signalling, with the token black friend, a gay friend & an Asian friend. It’s like the show is directly saying “noooo it’s not offensive when Mr Birchum starts geeking bc he has a diverse friend group”
...because they're not complaining about minorities existing in media. It's a reaction to the people acting like there's never been minorities in media until now. Both extremes are annoying. Like I get the reaction to right wing grifting but people are acting like it came out of nowhere. It's a reaction to things like Feminist Frequency which were largely embraced by the video game industry despite relying on deceptive arguments. In short, the only reason there can be a right wing grift is because there's a left wing grift.
... Yet accuse everyone of being the snowflake. They snowflake so hard.. They literally cry like a snowflake ABOUT SNOWFLAKES. Every conservative accusation is a confession.
There was a video of a Christian lady getting legitimately triggered by the fact that a gay character is in the show (even though that character is being mocked). They wanted to trigger the left so badly but ended up triggering themselves instead.
I think what makes American Dad or King OI The Hill work is how earnestly the beliefs are challenged but never in a scathing way. The episodes never end with Stan or Hank giving up what they believe, but rather seeing the exceptions. As well as that, the humour comes from how the attitudes of the characters are just a tad much (Hank being obsessive about propane (and propane accessories), Stan being so conservative he doesn't even realise his clearly gay neighbours are gay, etc). It reminds me of Fraiser, where the joke was how the brothers were so snobbish it hurt them. I think good comedy has to be willing to look foolish, and I don't think you can get that if you're too dogmatic, hence why the joke is always at someone else's expense with more conservative comedy. I even hate saying that, because I think you can be a conservative and funny, but you have to be willing to explore things. Like the gamer son bit; what if the son plays war games like CoD or Counter Strike, and it turns out that's how the father, being a vet, can relate to him, or even the son surprises him by being better at war than him in the game? What if the Dad gets into the game and is good; you can throw in a joke like "Wow! It's like I'm back in Nam! They've even got teabagging and slurs! Oh this takes me back." Just something, anything would have been better. I think what makes something truly bad isn't a lack of quality but wasted potential.
You make a really great point about comedy often being used to make the main character look foolish, and that this show seems to only be focused on putting others in that role. It comes across as just a power fantasy, or shower argument more than an honest attempt at making a good show.
@@consistentlystupid4726 Unfortunately that’s DW’s modus operandi: to make everyone else look and sound as foolish, stupid, and cruel as possible so that they can come in and be the “same” ones. Strawmanning is their bread and butter.

A huge issue with the show is that Mr. Birchum is that they use so much strawman archetypes to have the show ran. When you look at other sitcoms such as peak Simpsons, American Dad, and All In The Family, the writers made sure to bring depth to the characters that are on the opposite sides of the spectrum as them. There's a common joke on Chapo Trap House that states that political comedy usually falls apart because people often get too mad to actually make jokes. This seems like that exact problem.
thats why king of the hill does it the best. the political position it takes is “theres a human being behind every belief, and thats the important thing”

Yeah Birchum’s main group is a feeble attempt at virtue signalling, with the token black friend, a gay friend & an Asian friend. It’s like the show is directly saying “noooo it’s not offensive when Mr Birchum starts geeking bc he has a diverse friend group”
The daughter being praised for wanting to join a traditionally male career field is honestly the only thing I liked about the show.
...because they're not complaining about minorities existing in media.
Yep that's what I want nuance which

A huge issue with the show is that Mr. Birchum is that they use so much strawman archetypes to have the show ran. When you look at other sitcoms such as peak Simpsons, American Dad, and All In The Family, the writers made sure to bring depth to the characters that are on the opposite sides of the spectrum as them. Because of this, Mr. Birchum lacks the heart and charm those shows brings. The humor in this show also wears out very quickly as the jokes have a lot of redundancy.
Usually one guy is the annoying comedy piece, the other guy is the normal one reacting.
