    Thank you! I was doing it wrong, I bought my first mechanical watch and the dealer lady said I should put the hour and minute hand at 11 or close to 12 mark before changing the day and date. This cleared up a lot of things. Thank you!

It really helped me understand the way date change works and now I can confidently change the date anytime I want simply by changing the time first in order to avoid the dangerous time window! Just something I wanted to mention, my seiko watch came with a little booklet and there it says before changing the date i should set the date on the previous date. Is that important and if so in which way? Thanks alot again.

    what a helpful video! learning to set a mechanical watch between a.m. and p.m., and without damaging it, is not intuitive, but this video makes me feel like professional swiss watch expert. I feel like I have set my day/date at the 1st of the month after 9pm at least once or twice already (!!) so hopefully have not damaged the mechanism. So far it is still keeping good time (seiko NH36)

    I never knew this! My dad gave me a Sekio baby tuna watch and there was a problem with the day/date, the first stop when I pull the crown out does nothing I can only change the day/date when I pull it to the second stop which also changes the time I can manage to get the day/date right by changing the time back and too from around 9pm to 3am. So it must be broken somewhere but I can still manage to get it right would it be expensive to repair?

      well to change the time a lot of the time you’ll have to change the date before you change the time because you should NEVER move the time or date backwards. That will for certain destroy the movement.

    • @AlessandroGenTLe
      @AlessandroGenTLe Рік тому

      It is if you go backward. The date/day wheels are supposed to move only in one direction, if you are at 3am and you move the time backward to 10pm "of the previous day" you seriously risk to damage the movement.

It's not only me, plenty of watch collectors I know have done that as well, never had an issue.

    Right - can you change the time on your watch between those times? Daylight savings kicks in here tonight so i rolled my time back by an hour (not the date) so it read 11pm instead for midnight….

    So, if I understand correctly, I can in fact change the time (anytime night or day) - but do not adjust the date wheel during 9 pm - 3 am ? Is that essentially correct ?

    Suppose you have the watch hand set at "six".. It wouldn't matter if the movement was AM or PM right, would just set the date to day before and wind the time?

    Actually I hate day/date on watches because extra features makes dial asymmetrical which is bad for aesthetics. Best watch for me has no more than three hands on the same axle (and full set of Arabic numbers -> typical military style watches). Even when I wore my Seiko 5s I didn't care if it showed 25 on the 14th or Monday at Friday. But what about setting time? Can I do that anytime? And I think it's applies for "ghost date" watches as well. Some microbrand loves to use common date movements (NH35 and YN55 instead of NH38), can I change time also anytime? Thank you for your help! :-)

    Cool just broke my 3 months old automatic Seiko, as this wasn't mentioned in the manual and the watch was a gift so i never had a chance to speak to the sales person about the typical do's and don'ts

    I thought I could change the date, as long as the hour hand is not between 9 and 3. Didn't know it had to be at 5 or if there's any difference by doing it at 5 am or 5 pm. Please clear this out for me

    I have a watch with sub dials.
    When it reached 12midnight
    The Date and 24hours dial changed except the the Day of Week. I noticed the day of week changed at 3am or 4am. 🥴 Why is that so. . Haist. .
