WorldofWatches.com hi my watch dosent work anymore when i pull the crown out to set it the hands don't move even with the battery I try my other crowns it won't work eather it's a cheap watch that I got from Walmart a year ago and I wore it several times with out any problems and now it stop working period the crown won't set it how do I fix this ☹️
WorldofWatches.com I don't know what happen to it the crown won't move the hands anymore one time I took out the crown and I used a paper clip to set it I had to push it in and when I twisted it the hands turn and when I took it out to put the crown back in it still doesn't work please help
I've had my late 1960s Omega Seamaster for about 6 years. I wear it fairly frequently; it's my only watch. It was fixed before it was given to me and I was told it would need oiling once a year. I've only had it serviced once since then; it's certainly due for an oiling again if that initial advice is indeed true. When I had it serviced the man seemed surprised I was bringing it in as it was still working, even though he had been the one suggesting it be oiled once a year. I was then told about the only thing he could do was clean up the gummed up oil and re-oil it. I said OK and went through with the service which ended up costing about $50 or $60. A few months later I found that it wasn't keeping time very well though I was promised a 6 month warranty. I brought it back and it was fixed for free; I was told when I picked it up that a spring was out of whack or something. Here we are another year or two later and I'm finding it keeps inconsistent time; sometimes it will go fast and other times it seems to keep exactly the right time. Anyhow I'd rather not have to pay that much to have it serviced again so am wondering if there's anything I can do myself? I'm more concerned of whether it needs oiling than the time inconsistencies.
You can just oil it up once a year or whenever. It has to be striped down, cleaned from the old oil and the lubriacated and put together. Putting new oil on top of old oil serves no purpose. That is something a jewller would usually do not a watch repairer.
I've gone thirty years without taking my Seiko 5 for repairs of any kind, oiling or otherwise. I only took it in now because the winding is no longer lasting the night unless I shake it for a few minutes before I go to sleep. The watchmaker says he only replaced the main spring, cleaned and oiled the gears but the day/date not only looks different to me but is now English/Spanish instead of the English/French it should be so now I'm trying to get the English/French back through this watchmaker but I may have to pay another watchmaker if this one won't do it or swap the disc myself. There is really only one Seiko Canada approved watchmaker for repairs in Canada and Seiko Canada will only sell parts to their approved watchmakers hence all the others buy their parts from the US and China hence the English/Spanish day/date discs. Given that it's difficult to find a watchmaker you can trust, try not to have it maintained unless absolutely necessary and take photos of your watch front and back and of all the secondary language days of the week before taking the watch in for repairs. For all you know, the watchmaker could just swap out the calibre with a Chinese generic for $30 while charging you $150 to $250 for the service. Note that second hand Seiko 5's are as cheap as $20 so buying them for parts and practice at repairs works well, mind you they will likely have the wrong secondary language. Buying second hand Seiko 5's from a Canadian dealer that will show that it is a French secondary language in his photos typically costs $140. Many watch makers will just have a glass shop cut plate glass to size when replacing the crystal so you have to find one that will actually order in a new crystal but that's because they are used to not being able to find new old stock to buy. Plenty of Seiko 5's were made so you can buy a new old stock Hardlex crystal for about $20. If you want a sapphire crystal, you'll have to find a watchmaker willing to experiment with fitting Chinese generic crystal's and it'll be trial and error, again it's finding a watchmaker you can trust that is the problem. Still, finding a watchmaker you can trust is best done with your Seiko 5 than a more expensive watch that you will eventually be tempted by. Note, it will likely cost more to take a Seiko 5 in for repairs, even just cleaning and oiling then it would be to just buy a new one so repairing one is just for sentimental reasons and it may be best to buy a bag of second hand Seiko 5's from India and start taking them apart yourself. If the watch is running fast, have it demagnetized and then it'll run about 4 seconds slow per day and then slowly builup magnetism from your environment to run fast again at which point you demagnetize it again. A demagnetizer costs only $14, a good watchmaker or jeweler will demagnetize it for fre, old CRT TV's and computer monitors degauss on power up so we used to just use our TV's to demagnetize watches. Taking your watch in to adjust the time on warranty probably wasn't necessary and probably made it less accurate.
Excellent, thank you. I had never been told any of that before and your timing is perfect as I am receiving the first automatic watch since I was a kid for my birthday in a couple of days. Thank you, a great help for me out of the blue. Ten thumbs up!
Nice, but it doesn't answer ALL of our questions. Is it fine to let a watch sleep for months, or better to wind it every now and then (like twice a month for ex) ? How about using a winder ??
just saved myself $200 from some watch store saying they'll wind my watch properly for me now I know I can wind it myself and not cause damage thank you
I just wouldn't buy them, fuck that noise. I'd rather have a mechanical, then an auto that can't be hand wound. Same with non-hackable movements, I'd rather go without the seconds hand.
If you're a male i recommend to wear your watch on your right hand and go watch some porn with it. I grarafuckintee you that watch will be wound up in no time!
Thanks man, just got my antique look skeleton automatic watch. I literally gave it shakes then it stopped again. I taught I have to set time everytime.
WOW! THANK YOU! I never knew any of this, I am so happy you did this instructional Tour for us, Thanks So Much! I could have damaged my new watch I just bought.
Partially accurate. A lot of my automatic watches can't be hand wound and the date complication can until 4am to fully complete. The directions even say so.
its a very useful video, thanks.. I have following questions please: There are some automatic watches for example Orient Curator watch has ORIENT Cal. 46N40 Automatic Mov’t, which does not have manual winding, how to enable manual winding! what is the alternative best practice for such watches, please advise
I have a 45 year old Omega Seamaster which has never been serviced and still works perfectly and keeps perfect time. Always wind by a hand any automatic watch when it has stopped. Don't shake it. Apart from old Seiko movements which do not have hand winding.
I like how he wears two watches at the same time, and is currently using his left wrists watch for demonstration purposes in this video. Watches are more useful than you think!
Great lesson to all mechanical watch owners.Just as far as the Seiko 7S26 and 7S36 movements are not handwind capable. Will you try and show the guys out there how to handle them with care.Greetings
I am a new customer in the mechanical watch industry and recently purchased the Orient Star. I have no complaints : it is an absolutely gorgeous watch. However, should i keep this watch running at all times? For example, on days that i do not wear the watch, should i still wind the watch up? Or is it better to let it die and then set the time and wind it up for when I wear the watch?
All my pre owned watches, stop everytime I sleep...what's wrong? Do I need to shake it before sleeping. I never tske them off. All the Best . Thank you very much.
Very good info I bought a Seiko automatic years ago and never wore it because I could not get it to keep time I never had one before and didn't know how to use it.
thank you very much for this video! I'm getting my first automatic watch in a couple weeks and I was not aware of the technicalities that come with it when setting the date. of course, I will read all the manuals as well thank you again
Is there any precaution that needs to be taken if I just need to advance the date wheel, say if there aren't 31 days in the current month and I need to change it to the 1st?
but won't moving it to 6 if it's already engaged on a gear will mess it up? Is it better to let it run until it goes past that time? My thoguht process is you don't want to use your hand to change it betweent hat time period as that might put more strain on the gears engaged on the calendar wheel, so best to let it run past that time frame. Correct me if I am wrong since I am a beginner, I tried doing this on my automatic watch and it felt a little tougher than usual to turn it to the 6 am when it stopped at 2am. ALso the date changed as I turned it to 6 am
hi,thanks for the video, and i'll like to ask you that how do i let my automatic watch keep moving when i only wear just a few hour time at evening time everyday?
thanks for the information. i had no idea what i was getting myself into ordering an automatic watch. how much does little things like the date thing to be repaired
Hi sterling lee! If you want to keep the watch moving/winding while not wearing it you can purchase a watch winder, this will keep the watch spinning and winding for you. We do sell these at worldofwatches(dot)com. Thanks for the question!
There are many automatic calibers that will not wind by the crown, probably worth mentioning that when you suggest it is the best way to wind your watch. Nice ring, if you are 12!
Thanks great advice I got my new automatic watch, tried shaking it, wearing it but always stopped running how long does the winding last, do you recommend watch winder boxes, great video!
Every automatic mechanical watch is different.. 42 hours power reserve average for most watches. You won't need a winder unless you own several watches. I hope that answers your questions and yes I know it's a late reply lol.
Your no nonsense approach is appreciated and very informative. Now, is sending my watch to a jeweler or watch repair facility to get a routine tune-up (relubricating the gears and making sure its balanced and calibrated) something I should be doing? I've heard you should do it every few years to make sure the gears don't wear out from lack of attention
Just got my first automatic watch. Did everything you said in this video. I did mess up when setting the date, I lost track how many times it went part 12. But got it set. What do you do when a month has 30 days? Can you just set the correct date without doing anything specific?
Very nice video, I just got my first automatic, a Citizen NY0076-10E and the date/gear trick between 9 to 3 I didn t know. Thanks a lot for sharing valuable infos.
thank you, my new seiko automatic watch stopped working after it hit the 31st date (it was the month of Feb) and didn't wear it for 4 days straight. I wound it up but it was still stopping, now that I am wearing it again, seems to be okay. But I will deffo follow that tip of setting the time at 6
Thanks. That was really helpful and easy to follow. Any thoughts on a Swiss made Bulova accutron? I'm looking at getting my first automatic and found a used one for a good price. Anthony
I bought a seiko watch off of ebay and it hasnt been used in years so the movements stopped. ill shake it and the hands move abit and stop again. ill wind it manually and it stops 20 seconds after. how do i keep it going
This may sound stupid, but could movements too harsh damage the watch mechanism in anyway? Ive just purchased a fossil mech auto, id presume things like running and dancing while wearing the thing would be good source of energy over anything, but still wanted to check anyway. Cheers
Great info that was good to know having many auto's and the gentleman's style is none of your concerns a man like what he likes and he probably bought from wish but who cares he's helping us out with this video. And not a vid for fashion people.
If I only wear an automatic watch once a week, is there anything I should do when the watch is not in use? I was also wondering if there is a way to keep the time and date correct during the 6 days I'm not wearing it (without a watch winder of course)? For instance, giving it several gentle shakes each day or?...
Thank you so much on the explanation with the date!! My Tissot Quickster Nato Chronograph changed the date at noon! Also, the date changes at about 12:40 am...... Is there a fix for this or is this just the way it is?
My Sinn 556 changes at 11:59. Very few watches change dead on 12. 12:40 is a bit extreme but it's not a big deal. it will still display the right date for the day.
Thanks a lot for your very informative and easly understandable presentatin. I have recently bought SEIKO 5 automatic watch model SNZF15J1. As per watch description on amazon web site (from where i have bought) the power reservation capacity of the watch is 40 hours. The watch is not divivers watch and not also has screw down crown. It has a tranparnt back and and weighted semi circle roater as you have described in your presentation. Irs crown can be pulled to two different positions to manually adjust day, date and time like other autometic watches. But if its crown is pushed to last position it can be screwed to both clock wise and anticlock wise direction. My questions are 1. Can my watch be hand winded by crown ? 2. If it is not possible hand wind by crown then can it be winded to its full capacity by shaking the watch horizontally ? If it is possible to hand wind to its full capacity by horizontally shaking then for how long should be it be shaked ? 3. Is this type of shaking might be harmful for my watch ? I know my questions sound crazy but i am confused because this is my first automatic watch in my life. Thanks.
Have you got a video on watch winders? Im about to buy the seiko skx but you can't wind it manually. To be honest i dont think im active enough to keep it going and the solution to that is a watch winder, but i dont know how it works.
question: I have a Doxa Duca II and it works ok but looking at the rotor I noticed that it does not move as smooth as others including the watch from the presentation. I have it for 3 months but wore it rarely. Any idea if it might be a problem with it or if I should go to warranty with it? Please help Thank you very much
thanks a lot for the video mate! i been shaking my 1st automatic watch every time i use it cause after a while i can see the gear thingy getting slower.. now i know i can turn the knob instead of shake it hahaha.. cheers
Hi sir, i bought the tissot swissmatic v8 a few months ago. And within the first 2 months I could see that every time I removed the watch for an hour or so, the time in the watch was lost by a minute or two. I sent the watch for servicing and the customer care replaced the machine inside. However, i can still see that it lags by 10 or 20 seconds even when i am wearing the watch. Shouldnt the watch not be losing any time since it has its own power reserve? Or am i supposed to be following some steps to keep the watch running perfectly? This is my first automatic watch. Its a C15.111 caliber. Please advise.
When I got mine i turn the crown to give it energy and at some point doing that it will not let me turn it anymore, i dont know if i broke that stop sing but now it just lets me turn it non stop is this good or bad? thanks for your help!
Does it mean that if you start moving the date when hour hand is lets say on 10:00 that the date gear is engaged and you can make damage to mechanical movement?
Thank you - Rotary were unclear in their manual and my watch lost time today - now I know why, hopefully it won't happen again. Just to confirm, it's not possible to overwind an automatic watch?
Yeah you can't over wind an automatic. Keep in mind automatics aren't as accurate as Quartz watches. Expect to lose or gain up to 20 seconds every day with a mechanical watch.
+SAMO If the automatic is a Certified Chronometer, it will be within 4-6 seconds per day, usually better. Mine are generally about 2-3 seconds per day.
As someone who is just getting into automatic watches, the advice about setting the time to 6 before adjusting the date is invaluable.
Yes, wellsaid

hi,thanks for the video, and i'll like to ask you that how do i let my automatic watch keep moving when i only wear just a few hour time at evening time everyday?
Excellent video.!! Very well said.! Automatic watches are amazing.! So much info here.! Thanks
thanks for the information. i had no idea what i was getting myself into ordering an automatic watch. how much does little things like the date thing to be repaired
Hi sterling lee! If you want to keep the watch moving/winding while not wearing it you can purchase a watch winder, this will keep the watch spinning and winding for you. We do sell these at worldofwatches(dot)com. Thanks for the question!
Great explanations! So clear and helpful! Thank you very much!!!
There are many automatic calibers that will not wind by the crown, probably worth mentioning that when you suggest it is the best way to wind your watch. Nice ring, if you are 12!
do you pull crew all the way out and do you rotate tu wind up or down?
Oo like that watch... is it for sale?
Thank you! Great radio voice.
Great vid- informative. Any idea about the costs for servicing an Automatic Watch
thank you for the video, what model and price is the watch?
I am on a budget from 0 to 25 dollars
Austin Wille thanks
Just got my first automatic watch. Did everything you said in this video. I did mess up when setting the date, I lost track how many times it went part 12. But got it set.
What do you do when a month has 30 days? Can you just set the correct date without doing anything specific?
What direction do you turn your crown to wind your watch?
Very nice video, I just got my first automatic, a Citizen NY0076-10E and the date/gear trick between 9 to 3 I didn t know. Thanks a lot for sharing valuable infos.
What happens after coiling the mainspring does it gives the watch the power directly
thank you, my new seiko automatic watch stopped working after it hit the 31st date (it was the month of Feb) and didn't wear it for 4 days straight. I wound it up but it was still stopping, now that I am wearing it again, seems to be okay. But I will deffo follow that tip of setting the time at 6
Great vlog. Do quartz watches need any maintenance ?
Nuno MC just a battery change really
Daniel Fernandez Thank you !
Got my first automatic... Fossil ❤️
Thanks. That was really helpful and easy to follow. Any thoughts on a Swiss made Bulova accutron? I'm looking at getting my first automatic and found a used one for a good price. Anthony
does having the date at the 6oclock position change were you put the hands
ive only had this watch for about 5 days. i had it stop running on me 3 of those days when i put it on in the morning, is there a way to prevent this
I bought a seiko watch off of ebay and it hasnt been used in years so the movements stopped. ill shake it and the hands move abit and stop again. ill wind it manually and it stops 20 seconds after. how do i keep it going
Beautiful watch, useful video - thanks! I googled but can't find it anywhere!!!
This may sound stupid, but could movements too harsh damage the watch mechanism in anyway?
Ive just purchased a fossil mech auto, id presume things like running and dancing while wearing the thing would be good source of energy over anything, but still wanted to check anyway.
Cheers
Quick and simple, good job.
wow.com. can you tell me where to get the metal bracelet for that particular watch? thanks!
Great info that was good to know having many auto's and the gentleman's style is none of your concerns a man like what he likes and he probably bought from wish but who cares he's helping us out with this video. And not a vid for fashion people.
Is it the same rule for rado original diastar not to set date between 9 and 3
If I only wear an automatic watch once a week, is there anything I should do when the watch is not in use? I was also wondering if there is a way to keep the time and date correct during the 6 days I'm not wearing it (without a watch winder of course)? For instance, giving it several gentle shakes each day or?...
Thanks for the video. I've got my first auto on it's way *seiko orange monster gen 2* and this was very helpful information. Thanks again.
Brilliant information, purchased my first automatic.
Which one?
Thanks.
Omg, I didn't know I can break it like this, just bought my first automatic watch, gonna try
Answer me this the date on my Military Royale date changes at 8pm is this normal.
Please help
Thank you very much
So useful and breif! Glad it popped into my feed before my first purchase.
thanks a lot for the video mate! i been shaking my 1st automatic watch every time i use it cause after a while i can see the gear thingy getting slower.. now i know i can turn the knob instead of shake it hahaha.. cheers
It's called a Crown.
