Woeful review. This car is bulletproof. Mine has done 260,000 kms and no problems. Overtaking is amazing on country roads. I was recently on an 800km round trip and it just flies past 18 wheelers. At one point, I was doing 180 and had one hand on the wheel - the car is that composed. Not once did I feel like I was fighting the car. It is rock solid. After very long drives, I arrive feeling relaxed and calm. I'm probably going to buy another.
The Lexus GS450h was the right blend of comfort and speed (when launched it was Porsche/M5 quick - 5.2 seconds to 60). The older cars, like mine, were faster but economy was worse. I've owned BMW 5 series and 3 series but neither was as quick or reliable as the Lexus. Overtaking with the electric power boost is so safe and hysterically funny. If you prefer your daily drive to be comfy and economical, rather than exciting but bumpy, give this comment a thumbs up... I managed 43 mpg on a 200 mile trip up the M1 which in such a heavy car, with heavy traffic & delays, is quite an achievement for a car quicker than it's v8 stablemate. It has a detuned 3.5 litre petrol engine with two electric batteries combining to give maximum torque/power throughout the rev range. It doesn't have a CVT but instead Toyota call it an e-CVT planetary system which changes shape as you increase speed. With the power available you won't notice any drone and no gears = less moving parts to wear or go wrong. Even the nickel hydride battery is long lasting and Toyota themselves bought back some high mileage examples to see why it was so reliable. At the last service my Lexus garage gave me 12 months battery warranty for free which included battery replacement (cultivating my loyalty) which considering its an 11 year old car demonstrated a modicum of faith... Great car and fairly unique on the road - such a shame the GS was discontinued.
Why are you going to buy a diesel bmw 5 series over a lexus? This clip really shows you how different some Europeans are from Americans. The lexus may not be as sporty as a German car, but it sure is better equipped, and a hell of a lot more reliable.
These reviewers are race car drivers and would be expert drivers. But car reviews can be subjective and the review can be giving you their personal opinion which means they may not like certain aspects of this car which could cloud their vision of the overall car concept.
But remember, that that modern BMW, crummy in comparison Jaguar XF, or E Class will break down within 5 years.......... My dad got a 2009 5 Series when it was brand new, broke in 2014!! 😭😭 My 2009 GS350 has 300,000 km on the clock, and is still running like a clock!! And the hand stiched Japanese calf hide seats, and full hand scraped mahogany is UNBEATABLE compared to "MB TEX", or the joke of BMW pleater and plastic! 😂😂
I still don't understand the CVT hate. Holding the RPM where peak power occurs is more efficient, and means the driver is always at peak power, or at peak efficiency.
Its annoying at first but it grows on you and then in the end, you don't want to drive any conventional gearbox cars anymore. DSG or old school gearbox feels incredibly janky after you've driven proper a CVT.
@@epiccowboymemes2042 Let me correct you: Luxury first, reliability second (for most it's first), hybrid /due to fuel enconomy and instand torque = better supercharger third and ... sportiness ... very very last ... it is a luxury sedan not a overblown, over-engineered german crap. This review alone prevented me to click on another videos of this channel ... being bias is not suitable for a "serious" review channel.
The woman said a BMW 5 serie would be more efficient and have better price ?? Was she drunk!!??? For an equal motor and equipements a BMW 5 series is about 6000 to 8000 P more!!
Obviously she had no idea what was she talking about. I did own 5 series F10 with 3 l diesel engine and now I owe GS 450h the same model as on this video and I can easily say BMW is made a lot worse . The mileage was lower in bimmer but materials inside looked much worse and cheaper than in lexus . For the same equipment I have got in Lexus I would have to pay more in bmw . The fuel economy isn't as good as I expected in lexus (around 28 mpg in town ) but other than that much better than German rivals (I had E class as well W212 facelift)
Lexus is not that overpriced,it's the tax that makes it higher than normal,I would take Lexus than Bmw because Toyota owns Lexus and Toyota means reliable :)

The lexus i imagine will be more reliable, more exclusive and hold its value better long term. You do not buy a massive sedan ,to chuck around in the real world do you.
What is the point of Fifth Gear??? They keep being subjective... and ignore some of the official technical specs. 1)the car gets 345 hp combined, not 286(286 come from the gas engine only) 2) if they really care about looks and handling they should have tested the F sport as FredrickGFX suggests 3) Vicky ... BMW... Range Rover... that is hilarious 4) This particular CVT is one of the fastest gearboxes and it seamlessly transfer torcque and power without considerable losses... And if you floor the car at 100 km/h the tachometer would go instantly from 1k revs to 6k revs without any drama ... this is something that any DSG or sequential-shifting gearbox cannot do!
Ignorant? Three of these reviewers are race car drivers. And between them they have lost's test car experience. Again all reviews are subjective unless there is a metric that they are scaled upon to compare against other cars. Toyota to me are the best built cars in the world and I swear by them but others do not like them.
Vicki Butler-Henderson: Been racing since she was a little kid, holds racing licenses Tiff Needell: Former pro racing driver, did a stint in F1 Jason Plato: Only of the most succesfull British Touring Car Championship drivers ever. Yeah, these ignorant people...
+WindmillStalker hold on I think Georgi may have a point. These are racecar drivers so you could argue that they're not suited to reviewing road cars. But from previous Team Tests I think you can forget about that. I just feel... Fifth Gear is a tad BMW-biased. Besides, I don't know if you noticed it, but the two people that spent the more time in the car gave it a higher rating. On top of that, they were Tiff and Jason who are insane critics - they just look for hours to find something to moan about. Either way, it's a great car.
CVT's are boring as fuck and indeed feel weird since the sound of the engine doesn't match the acceleration as in a normal torque converter or dual clutch. Also, this car weighs like a ship since it has to carry batteries and an electric motor (which is not always in use) around so a normal car with only a combustion engine is naturally going to feel more nimble. Hybrids are good at many things except being sporty and this is no exception.
Having the engine sit at its peak torque RPM while the gearbox handles the increase in speed isn't a "black mark".... it's the achievement of the holy grail of internal combustion engines whose torque varies with RPM.
I bet a present day comparison between the 10year old GS450H and the 535D taking into ownership cost, reliability etc would weigh massively in favour of the GS450H.
Too many motoring journalists these days just concentrate on how well they can race them around. They also just immediately bow for any Merc, BMW or Audi they see.
Going back to the Original GS 300 93-97, and every GS since then it has always been about the ride, smoothness, and luxury; yet it gives you just enough sport to make the drive on a winding road pleasant
Since my last comment, I have a bought a used Lexus RX450h with the same engine, but with 4 wheel drive. Ulez. Understated luxury. They are fast when needed. Drive it in the correct way and I can hit 60mpg.. yes 60, average 50mpg is there without trying, all down to the electric motors.
I think he meant the handling was "slow" moreso than the acceleration. I take that to mean it felt slow to respond to inputs and didn't feel very nimble through the corners. And that's probably true, but then it isn't exactly tuned for spirited driving.
@@pires908 Very few people, I agree. I guess they were trying to show that it's not a car for keen drivers, but I thought it was fairly well-known that Lexus prioritises comfort over handling, so I'm not sure who they were trying to educate. I can't imagine anyone looking at this thinking: "damn, I really wanted a Lexus, but its poor drifting performance is a deal-breaker" - but what do I know!
The part that makes me laugh is that he says he wouldn't mind one after the test. Their test drives are entertaining to watch but I wouldn't buy a car based on their view. There are a lot of guys who do good honest reviews on UA-cam.
I love how surprised they are that it handles poorly on a track. Like, really? The Audi S/RS6, BMW M5, Mercedes E63 AMG and Lexus GS-F (does that exist?) are made for the track. The standard models will handle well enough on everyday backroads.
Sadly, Honda doesn't sell Acura in the UK. I'd like to see a review for the 377HP RLX Sport Hybrid AWD. Although it's not as stylish, it performs really well. It has one of the most advanced AWD systems on the market.
... Why the 450h? Why not the F-sport? The F-sport is such an amazing car... the 450h wasn't tuned for the track at ALL. Two completely different goals.
VDIM is the reason why it's not letting the drift the GS. When it first came out, Motorweek immediately felt it during their tests when they tried to push it through the corners. It's a second layer of safety and control over the already great Vehicle Stability Control.
I've got one. The way it picks up speed from 80 to 120mph is really nice 👌 It's so smooth, comfortable, and relatively economic. Bullet-proof reliability. Looks great. Build quality excellence.
Jason sums it up spot on of what this car is about. Add reliability and these cars (if been serviced by the book) as secondhand is a very good alternative to a equivalent German diesel car if you daily drive long distances. If you drive within the speed limits in normal trafic, the "CVT-experience" is none existence in this car. The engine doesn't hit peak rpm until around 80 mph, and you rarely need full throttle to do normal and safe overtakes or accelerations from on ramps to get up to speed.
What year is this car? I don't see it written anywhere nor did I hear them mention it. I can tell you it's not a 2007 or a 2008. I have a 2007 and it's 339 HP not 286 and it's 0-100 is 5.2 not 5.9. And it's quicker than any of its rivals. I drove a BMW 550i before getting the Lexus and it was noticeably slower. I also got 45 mpg over a half hour period at 110 kph on the cruise control, twice. But 35 is more like the long term average if you "drive" it. The CVT isn't a "black" mark it's brilliant! Gas engines have a sweet spot for torque and another for economy. By letting the transmission vary the ratio constantly the computer can put the engine on that spot and leave it there! It's pure genius! I have to admit it's not much to look at but in terms of luxury, performance, economy and reliability it will run circles around any European car in its class! Make that ANY car in its class!
if you live in the UK if the registration is in the format AA00 AAA where A is a letter and 0 is a number the number on this car is 12 so its an early 2012 car (possibly 2013 for American modelling system) if the number is 02-14 it is earl;y in their respective year. if the number is 50 where 0 is a number from 1-9 its late 2001 to 2009. if it is 60, 61, 62, 63, or 64 it is later 2010, 11, 12, 13 ,14 respectively. There are other formats which I can explain if your interested
Warren NZ I think that the 286 hp figure comes from the official stat sheet, the one on the registration papers, only the gas engine is taken in consideration, the added power from the electric motors however isn't.
Armin K That's right. The total figure published by Lexus for the 2007 GS450h is 339 HP which includes the electric motor. The sum of the 2 individual powers is miles higher than that but I think the way they hook up gives a peak HP lower than that.
BMW cost more to own, i own BMW X6 after warranty expired the car become a nightmare, service internal cost is expensive, the car has only 38K miles. and it visit the dealer 4 times a year, while my 2005 Mercury grand marquis with 180k miles i didn't changed nothing unless tires and oil change. LEXUS Better value for money and way more reliable.
Those panther body cars (crown vic, grand marquis, town car) can run forever!! My grandfather has a 1996 grand marquis and it has around 300,000 kilometres on it. Still runs like a champ even though he VERY RARELY drives it (like twice a year at most) because he daily drives his other 2 trucks. One is a late 60s early 70s F100 and the other is a 2007 F150

after over 20 years of driving Audi i switched to Lexus and never looked back !! In normal driving you do not accelerate like these testers always do ! And than the V6 with the Toyota/Lexus planetary gear cvt is very good. The trick is after a short while of high rpm´s you can lower the throttle and it still accelerates whil shfting up and engine rpm comes down. I like that very much but its not possible with these shit 4cyl. which are always under heavy load and stress and louder. Imho a Lexus deserves a V6 at minimum but the consumption is 1-2ltr above yes.... by god its worth it !!!
i find it so stupid to compare a hybrid to a diesel. the hybrid on the lexus can barely compare to a petrol automatic, from the efficiency and reliability standpoint. Has anyone seen the HSD? it's simpler than a manual. the AC is powered electrically - so no mechanical loss when it's on, there's no alternator, no aditional starter motor, no belt for the AC and alternator. and best of all, there's no DPF. The diesel may be more efficient in urban environments, but it's definitely more complicated and less reliable. bottom line - the toyota - lexus hybrids manage efficiency and reliablilty at speeds below 70 km/h. something that the diesels don't do anymore. another funny thing is the fear of new tech, despite diesels adopting the euro6 pollution norm. hybrids have been around for 10-15 years now? people are afraid of battery failure... hell, the hybrid is 50% more economical than a petrol engine. in 10 years the battery would have paid for itself. there are taxi drivers who got 400k km on their battery (in 10 years). What is all the fuss about? own an auris hybrid MY2015, my first petrol after a long list of manual 'box diesels. it's excellent to thrash around in the city. i am considering a gs 450h as a weekend/holiday car... i've had fears about winter driving with that rwd and high torque, but apparently there's a bloke in russia who doesn't have any stress with snow blizzards at night when driving his gs450h.
That’s great. I am thinking of buying an f sport, looks better externally than the normal premium/luxury versions. Is the car stable at high speeds? How do you find the auto box when accelerating?
@@slimtimothy1 the f sport is slightly more sporty inside and out. The stability at speed is just as good as any car out there. The four wheel steering is a revelation it corners like a go kart the back wheels can lean 1.5 degrees my first time experiencing it this also my first auto but I’ve driven and Audi auto and that was horrible the Lexus auto main feature selling point is it’s smoothness hence sports luxury its no bmw killer but the sports mode really wakes the car up into a bit of a savage in a good way but as a penalty I tested the car in sports mode for an entire week which added £10 on top of my normal £33 weekly feel up 😝
Tiff, Plato, & Jonny get the point. Vicky is just a ‘boy racer’ she doesn’t get the point.. they should re-evaluate in 2020 with the London Low emission zone and congestion charge in full swing.. make sense then...
Yes but your bmw will break and their service dept won't care less .... Unlike Lexus which will never fail and the service dept will treat you like god ...
This is a good example of why you should never base your purchase on the opinion of the so-called "experts", most often they just state their inherent biases.
The only part of this video that's actually relevant is 4:02 - 4:15. And I think it's funny how they keep comparing its efficiency to a diesel while completely ignoring that the hybrid emits less CO2, less NOx and less particulates.
I used to read Autocar and the other car magazines regularly. Since 1994 to be exact. I'm 46 years old now. The bias has always been towards the German cars. I bought a BMW E34 535i in 1998 based on what these journos used to say. Handling was good no doubt but reliability was not great. The car became a money pit. I've had 6 different Toyotas since then and other cars as well. If you're spending your hard earned money, buy a Toyota / Lexus. They are extremely reliable. I drove an LS400, 1998 model, in 2008. It was the smoothest car I had ever driven. Everything worked. The astonishing thing was it had 212,000 miles on the clock...
vicky got the price wrong. the base price of a 535d f11 was lower then the base price of a 450h yes... but if youd equip the 535d up to the spec the lexus comes as the "basemodel" the bmw is basically the same price.
If Lexus had outfitted this car with some nice substantially aesthetic rims it would have visually stood out from the typical luxury sedan, which helps push product. Unfortunately I haven't seen many of these on the road in SoCal. If you want to compete with the big boys from top to bottom, it's about dotting your "I's" and crossing your "T's".
This review is typical of the British motoring press.....I suspect bought by BMW as usual. In real world terms the Lexus is cheaper to run because: A. It will almost never go wrong B. You are less likely to get ripped off by their dealerships on servicing and extremely dodgy "free" health checks Minor differences in fuel economy are not as big a deal as people think and of course petrol is cheaper than Diesel. (I do 40,000 Miles a year by the way) The other main differences are a great interior compared to staggeringly dull BMW. I spend most of my time in my car, not outside looking at it! One other staggering ommission is the actual price it would cost to spec a 5 series to the level if a GS ££££££!!
These are three race car drivers who are testing the car as race car drivers do and that is the main point of fifth gear. They tend to be more interested in performance than anything else and they normally push these cars to the limit as well.
Great video guys, I like that GS450h! I used to own a 2007 IS 250 and now have a 2019 CT200h and 2004 SC430. Great reliable cars! Ps all of my channel is dedicated to Lexus content ;)
Why Lexus over BMW? it's easy; the interior quality, build quality and dealers of BMW have been notoriously shitty and worse than the industry average for decades and there's no sign of improvement. Also there are too many BMWs on the roads and everyone's fed up with the same old ugly pig nose grill.
So you would choose a Lexus over a BMW, because (and in your words)BMW dealerships are shitty? So you would drive a car with a CVT, no driving pleasure at all, and basically emulates its rivals? BMW and the other German auto makers seem to be doing something right, if there are more of them on the road rather than a Lexus.
Tim, you clearly know nothing about Lexus. CVT is only on the hybrid models; furthermore, "emulating it's rivals" while constantly being on top off all the consumer charts is quite a humorous argument. There are far more BMW on the road, well so what? Maybe it has something to do with the preposterous depreciation? Have you ever compared used lexus vs bmw? Looking at facts, I think lexus is the one who knows what they are doing.
Has it ever crossed your mind that - maybe - dumb drivers, just as dumb people, form a clear majority? BMW sells well for this reason only. Just as diesel cars oversell petrol or hybrids: because the crowd always goes for what makes less sense. For many, BMW ownership means a high IQ, but that may well be the opinion of those who misread flashiness for class. Lexus is for the few who understand the difference between Hollywood car races and driving in the real world.
Does the AVERAGE person who would want to buy a E-class ,5 series or GS want to do 120MPH Inertia Drifts .I don't think so .why not test the criteria that are important to the 5 series Demographic .such as Range ,comfort ,show the equipment test the MPG when its not being driven like its stolen
Out of all the other well balanced lexus cars they had to pick the one with an obese battery on the back to go around a test track. Typical british anti-marketing strategy.
Fucking stupid to compare diesel with big hybrid!!! The whole test was fucking stupid, it´s not designed to be driven at race tracks, it´s designed for comfort!!!
I don't think this was a fair review team why didn't you have the F Sport version Lexus vehicles are for luxury smoothness and reliability no German car will give you that....
real life economy better than a 520d, performance on par with a 545i, and more reliable than both put together. plus the whining from the E-CVT (no belt, only planetary gearsets) means maximum power AT ANY speed, at the same time the engine can also idle when cruising at 140 km/h.
you would rather have a jaguar XF? well i'm sorry, how many times did jaguar go bust? where is it made? india? if i'm going to buy an indian car, i'll get a Tata, not a range rover and not a jaguar.
I won't deny it's a good car, it just doesn't fit my requirements. I'd rather just get a Mercedes C-class. It might not be as fuel efficient, but it handles much better, it's still somewhat above the bell curve on efficiency, it has a nicer interior AND it doesn't cost nearly as much.
This car is not for a race track, I would sue them if I was Lexus. He had the cheek at the end to say he would not mind one. So why slate the car for the entire test?
This wasn't a fair review. They're putting the car on the track and its not the best handling model with the rear wheel steering? That's just stupidity!
The running costs of a lexus is way cheaper than euro cars. So in the long run, the average lexus owner is contented with the brand while the euro car owner will be frustrated with the repair bills when shit breaks down...
You missed the point of a pommy tv show, a little bit of seriousness overshadowed by a huge amount of having a laugh! I don't buy cars based upon their recommendations anymore than a certain other motoring shows cool wall! It's purely entertainment and they all gel together well to give us just that.

This "review" is just shit talking about something they are not qualified to review! You present a Toyota hybrid ... introduced 1998 .. and complain about the rubberband? Get a grip! Fuel-economy is bad? Comparing a V6 petrol with a diesel is the lowest! The fuel-ecnomy in practice is about 37 MPG, which is phenomenal for a 340 hp car petrol car! Ahh -- speaking about hp figures ... it has in fact 340 hp .. not .. what was the figure ... in the 260 something mentioned in this video. The V6 produces 290 hp and the E motor the rest. A diesel cost more in taxes, should not used constantly on short distances (carbon building up) etc. This review is like taking a Smart "tuned" by Brabus and treating it like a sports car! What a disgrace!
They managed to drift the GS ... but having a battery pack under the floor makes the expierence differerent. They should have tried it out beforehand before trashing it at the first drive.
Why doesn't Toyota/Lexus have a 3.0l high powered diesel with like 260-300 hp and 580 - 680 NM of torque? I'd buy a Lexus with such an engine without a second thought.
You have clearly not driven Audi's new 3.0l BiTDI with 313 bhp and 650NM. 0-100km/h in 5.5 secs, while consuming an average of 10l/100 km. It's faster than any petrol engined sedan Lexus currently offers. So diesel doesn't suck at all these days. You should catch up with the times.
Compare GS 450h equipment with BMW 540d xDrive for ex.and you should see that Lexus GS 450h is cheaper, and GS 450h have 345 hp.and BMWd 540d xDrive have 320 hp,i drive GS 450h and it's feel amazing.
so the lexus didn't meet their needs? so what to me I rather drive it like a a luxury car. don't get me wrong it's still a nice car. . I like the lay out inside and out. . very clean and it feels luxury.
+David Castaneda It's an old-school luxury car. Focused entirely on comfort and amenities. Unfortunately, there's not much of a market for those kinds of cars outside the extreme luxury class a.k.a. dictator cars.
Aside from those purchasing an LFA or an LC500, who buys a Lexus for vulgar styling or sporty handling? And who in their right mind would want to turn off the traction control! These four, with the possible exception of one of them, clearly don't understand the Lexus GS, or the people who buy them. Jag XF? No thanks. @@zachaphina3140 That depends what type of road you’re on. Country roads in Western Australia are not 6 lane highways

They shouldn't call it GS, but LNO, a car like no other. Amazing car! I mean C A R...
Not detuned....it only revs to 6k rpm that why you only get 292.

Luxury first, reliability second (for most it's first), hybrid /due to fuel enconomy and instand torque = better supercharger third and ... sportiness ... very very last ... it is a luxury sedan not a overblown, over-engineered german crap.
This review alone prevented me to click on another videos of this channel ... being bias is not suitable for a "serious" review channel.
@@VampirusX Yeah I'm still waiting to let you do that. I'm not sure how something marketed as a luxury car is a luxury car last.
The woman said a BMW 5 serie would be more efficient and have better price ?? Was she drunk!!??? For an equal motor and equipements a BMW 5 series is about 6000 to 8000 P more!!
Lexus are overpriced in Europe compared to US due to the high tariffs , while BMW are much cheaper because they're domestic products
not everybody is american m8, not everybody ...
problem are the high import taxes to save our german brands in europe ! US import taxes are much lower
@@marcing223 you're lying. You can't afford anything
Lexus is not that overpriced,it's the tax that makes it higher than normal,I would take Lexus than Bmw because Toyota owns Lexus and Toyota means reliable :)

Go for the GS250 f sport With the proper auto gearbox
What is the point of Fifth Gear??? They keep being subjective... and ignore some of the official technical specs.
1)the car gets 345 hp combined, not 286(286 come from the gas engine only)
2) if they really care about looks and handling they should have tested the F sport as FredrickGFX suggests
3) Vicky ... BMW... Range Rover... that is hilarious
4) This particular CVT is one of the fastest gearboxes and it seamlessly transfer torcque and power without considerable losses...
Vicki Butler-Henderson: Been racing since she was a little kid, holds racing licenses
Tiff Needell: Former pro racing driver, did a stint in F1
Jason Plato: Only of the most succesfull British Touring Car Championship drivers ever.
Georgi Popov I told them to test the f sport 2
That's what everyday drivers don't understand.
you can keep your cvt, if i wanted pure performance id buy an electric. driving is more than pure efficiency
will the bmw last as long without maintenance? Hell no.
it defo won't hehe
I bet a present day comparison between the 10year old GS450H and the 535D taking into ownership cost, reliability etc would weigh massively in favour of the GS450H.
Great video, I think the GS is a fantastic car! Shame they discontinued it!
I agree
If only they understood the car is all about it's luxury and not drifting around a track!
They spend the entire drive slagging the car off then he says he wouldn't mind one?? What an idiot
The idiots are immediately biased against anything that isn't a VW group car, BMW or Mercedes.
Too true. Be nice if they did the test based on every day use and not like we are all about to enter a Grand Prix
Vicki doesn't like it, oh it's not a BMW as she always refers to. And yes it's not a BMW, because it's not at the ignorant dealer awaiting repair
She is a bimbo.
He said it was slow, but it does 0 to 60mph in approx 5.5 sec's, seen slower
Imagine they tested the GS300h :P
I think he meant the handling was "slow" moreso than the acceleration. I take that to mean it felt slow to respond to inputs and didn't feel very nimble through the corners. And that's probably true, but then it isn't exactly tuned for spirited driving.
@@TRASHoftheTITANS True but sometimes they drive these cars like Grand Prix cars, who really drives like that?
The standard models will handle well enough on everyday backroads.
there were no GS-F at that point
What about gs f-sport?, will give more thrill
@@stefanpanayotov4538 later they offered a gs-f on this model. Super rare to find obviously.
Do you mean the GSF (M5 rival) or do you mean F sport as the trim package (like the M sport pack on a 530d?)
The F-Sport is not just a trim package. AVS, variable strg ratio and RWS transform the handling
VDIM is the reason why it's not letting the drift the GS. When it first came out, Motorweek immediately felt it during their tests when they tried to push it through the corners. It's a second layer of safety and control over the already great Vehicle Stability Control.
I've got one. The way it picks up speed from 80 to 120mph is really nice 👌
It's so smooth, comfortable, and relatively economic. Bullet-proof reliability. Looks great. Build quality excellence.
Simply put Lexus make the finest automobiles on the planet. I'm going to test drive and hopefully buy a 2006 GS450h this week.
The engine doesn't hit peak rpm until around 80 mph, and you rarely need full throttle to do normal and safe overtakes or accelerations from on ramps to get up to speed.
oh god, why the fuck are they driving a big lexus hybrid on a fucking race trac
Admiral_Awesome Thanks. That'll be why it's slower then.
Cheers
Warren NZ I think that the 286 hp figure comes from the official stat sheet, the one on the registration papers, only the gas engine is taken in consideration, the added power from the electric motors however isn't.
Armin K That's right. The total figure published by Lexus for the 2007 GS450h is 339 HP which includes the electric motor. The sum of the 2 individual powers is miles higher than that but I think the way they hook up gives a peak HP lower than that.
Warren NZ It's what's confusing about hybrids especially for people who don't bother to check, like these "journalists" really.
My grandfather has a 1996 grand marquis and it has around 300,000 kilometres on it. after over 20 years of driving Audi i switched to Lexus and never looked back !!

Lovely car. They should have drove an F Sport though if they were so concerned about appearance and handling.
They are comparing it to similar priced / option vehicles
I miss this car...
You do get the very essence of Lexus... corner slide on a race course. You are smart...there's no if or but about it.
Thinking about this for my next car, never driven a Lexus before!
Should of tested the F-Sport
But the Lexus is much cheaper to own because it is more reliable and better made.
+Krevin Grard and makes 345hp total not 286 as mentioned
i find it so stupid to compare a hybrid to a diesel. the hybrid on the lexus can barely compare to a petrol automatic, from the efficiency and reliability standpoint.
Just an update I have this car now f sport with rear wheel steer for 10 months and like it very much. Average £33 usage a week and tax £155.
The four wheel steering is a revelation it corners like a go kart the back wheels can lean 1.5 degrees my first time experiencing it this also my first auto but I’ve driven and Audi auto and that was horrible the Lexus auto main feature selling point is it’s smoothness hence sports luxury its no bmw killer but the sports mode really wakes the car up into a bit of a savage in a good way but as a penalty I tested the car in sports mode for an entire week which added £10 on top of my normal £33 weekly feel up 😝
How’s it still? I’m considering getting one
If this had a conventional automatic box this car would be a full on winner

Lexus should have sent the F sport version. It looks so much better
They don't deserve the F-sport ... they were bias from the start. What a disgrace!
Tiff, Plato, & Jonny get the point. Vicky is just a ‘boy racer’ she doesn’t get the point.. they should re-evaluate in 2020 with the London Low emission zone and congestion charge in full swing.. make sense then...

Owned a BMW 520d from new for 10 years - not a single issue, apart from the regular wear and tear of tyres and brake pads etc
@@oof9090 owned 5 bmws and 3 mercs. Not a single issue.
This is a good example of why you should never base your purchase on the opinion of the so-called "experts", most often they just state their inherent biases.
The only part of this video that's actually relevant is 4:02 - 4:15. And I think it's funny how they keep comparing its efficiency to a diesel while completely ignoring that the hybrid emits less CO2, less NOx and less particulates.
indeed these testers are either complete Noobs, ignorants or well payed by our german brands !
In the end, it got (beside the clear bias of the testers) a very good rating.
Throwing the GS under the bus right from the beginning says it all!
Brilliant car, I love the variomatic ;-D
vicky got the price wrong. the base price of a 535d f11 was lower then the base price of a 450h yes...
but if youd equip the 535d up to the spec the lexus comes as the "basemodel" the bmw is basically the same price.
All the wrong tests on a luxury car. What about ride, NVH, seat comfort?
than the Lexus had won....cant be in europe where import tax is so high to save mainly our german brands !!
I will never go to London so I don’t care, diesel cost more per gal doesn’t balance. You guys and gals are the tools.
Copy the crowd
This review is typical of the British motoring press.....I suspect bought by BMW as usual.
In real world terms the Lexus is cheaper to run because:
A. It will almost never go wrong
B. You are less likely to get ripped off by their dealerships on servicing and extremely dodgy "free" health checks
Minor differences in fuel economy are not as big a deal as people think and of course petrol is cheaper than Diesel.
It's not meant to be a track car? Or a sporty drive, it's designed to waft in silence, getting one to A and B in luxurious first class travel.
I feel like they are so biased to European cars
I used to drive Mercs and BMWs, but when I got a Lexus I realised that German cars are very unreliable and expenxice to fix
why all this hate on Lexus, you can't compare a Lexus to a BMW for pure driving pleasure. But luxury interior wise it beats bmw hands down
Why Lexus over BMW?
it's easy; the interior quality, build quality and dealers of BMW have been notoriously shitty and worse than the industry average for decades and there's no sign of improvement.
They got the horsepower figure wrong. It's way more and more powerful than a 535d. I have one and it's better than any German car
Don't forget the torque
Who walks into a car showroom with £50000 and asks how well does it drift?
Out of all the other well balanced lexus cars they had to pick the one with an obese battery on the back to go around a test track. Typical british anti-marketing strategy.
The flick was too big... lmao
Well that is why you go aftermarket with the exhaust and see if the 6k rpm still wear you down😀😀
Fucking stupid to compare diesel with big hybrid!!!
You did not open the trunk... Haven't you?
When they don't turn of traction control
I'm old fashioned so when they are screaming mouse, the first thing that comes to mind is a rodent and not a swivel pad
I think they need the regular gs. This was a hybrid...
We only get the hybrid in the UK (apart from the GS 250 when it first came out)
it was looking promising until the CVT was prominent. I had a company car ( CT200H unfortunately ) and the CVT was horrible.
What a ridiculously poor review. I think they have all missed the point of what a Lexus is. I'd take this over any BMW, Jaguar or Mercedes any day.
+VestedUTuber C-class competition is the lexus IS, which handles very well
Next time on Fifth Gear they’re trashing a camper van around the track and complain about the lack of sportiness
This car is not for a race track, I would sue them if I was Lexus. He had the cheek at the end to say he would not mind one. So why slate the car for the entire test?
If that car had a BMW logo on it, it would BE recognizable
This wasn't a fair review. They're putting the car on the track and its not the best handling model with the rear wheel steering? That's just stupidity!
bmw money pays everithing
The running costs of a lexus is way cheaper than euro cars. So in the long run, the average lexus owner is contented with the brand while the euro car owner will be frustrated with the repair bills when shit breaks down...
Review the 350 F sport.. what is the point to review the hybrid with a CVT? you're a motoring tv show.

Also that diesel 5 series isn’t Ulez or euro 6 like this lexus is and diesel fuel costs more
This 1850kg lexus won't drift, who would have guessed?
so, drifting seems one of the main categories for buying/driving a car in the UK ? these testers suck !
They managed to drift the GS ... but having a battery pack under the floor makes the expierence differerent.
They should have tried it out beforehand before trashing it at the first drive.
They are 345hp not 286hp
Why doesn't Toyota/Lexus have a 3.0l high powered diesel with like 260-300 hp and 580 - 680 NM of torque?
I'd buy a Lexus with such an engine without a second thought.
Alexandr Umanetz cause diesel sucks!
Alexandr Umanetz Problem isn't the engine, but the emission control system. EGRs, DPFs, and SCRs are expensive junk and they fail regularly.
It is relatively easy to remove some of that junk, and you will get better economy and even more power! :-)
+Alexandr Umanetz True, but I must say..I do like the linear torque petrol engines have.

It's an old-school luxury car. Focused entirely on comfort and amenities. Unfortunately, there's not much of a market for those kinds of cars outside the extreme luxury class a.k.a. dictator cars.
Get the gs f next time

The car have 345 horsepower.
No it’s not
@@ollielappage7775 yes it is, I own this.
Aside from those purchasing an LFA or an LC500, who buys a Lexus for vulgar styling or sporty handling? And who in their right mind would want to turn off the traction control! These four, with the possible exception of one of them, clearly don't understand the Lexus GS, or the people who buy them. Jag XF? No thanks. I don't much care for being stranded at the side of the road waiting for the RAC. Or for the Arthur Dayley image, thanks very much all the same.
